It's almost my lunch break, but I have to ask one question - do other people's churches discuss/preach about/have bible studies about submission?

I am being 100% honest in saying that NO church I have ever attended preached or taught on submission. I listen carefully, I would have noticed. And that's not just churches we were members of, but also churches we visited, and yes a couple we only visited once, but others we visited a dozen times at least before deciding it wasn't for us. Our most recent membership was 4 or 5 years. Never once was submission on the agenda.

The one marriage book we studied (Seasons of Marriage) had nothing about submission. I actually - foolishly - asked the 4 couples and 1 wife about submission, and they looked at me as though I was nuts. I have asked women in my Bible studies about submission, same response. They don't even think about it. The people in the marriage study - other than us - were long time married/first marriage.

So where is it being discussed outside of Christian forums? (By that I mean Christian forums in general, not Christian Forums specifically). Evidently it eats up a lot of internet time, because we had these same discussions time and time again at other forums.

If it's not being discussed outside of forums like this that where is all of the so called toxic teaching on the subject that some others refer to coming from? Where is the "mainstream" teaching that women should submit, even to abuse coming from?

Of the 11 churches (one being a home/cell church) that I've attended in my life for at least 6 mos, 5 of them did preach/teach/discuss this. Two of them even used Created to be his Help Meet as the women's Bible study for a while.

I never heard it taught from the pulpit. Where I did encounter discussion on submission was in Christian counseling....with a well-known female counselor. I was told, point blank, "But wives are to submit to their husbands in EVERYTHING." That was the answer. She said my husband and I would then have no conflict.

It's on the internet, I think. I don't know. I can't answer for comments I haven't made myself, I can only speak from my own experience.

Is it taught at your church?

Wow. I have never heard of that book. I am going to look it up. May I ask what denomination you are? If that's rude, I apologize. I'm just curious.

BTW, I don't have a problem with being "the helpmeet", well I kinda do, but not to the point where I would go to war over it or anything, but I haven't looked at the book yet.

Yeah, I don't think I would like that book very much. Just my opinion.

How did you get on with it?

No not at all. My point was that it is portrayed by some here as a widespread mainstream teaching and it would seem that maybe it's not.

Wow. Really? And did it work that way?

Yeah, I read that article. That article gave me a considerable headache. Like I said elsewhere, it's when reading this kind of thing that I realize what an awesome husband I have.

My Pastor preached on it just a few weeks ago (Dear Pastor), and I hear about it quite frequently on Christian Radio. My husband turns the radio up super loud whenever John MacArthur is on that subject! (I bought ear plugs ^_^)

I can't listen to the Dear Pastor part just now - will later - but John MacArthur ... he seems a bit weird.

The four regular churches where I encountered the "women should always be submissive all the time" attitude and teaching were a Church of God, a United Pentecostal Church, a Holiness Church and a Southern Baptist Church. The other place was at the home/cell church we attended for a small time until we both decided that they were absolutely bonkers.

For the last 4 years, we've been attending a nondenominational church from the Plymouth Brethren movement; not the extremist exclusive Plymouth Brethren but the open one. I do know that the pastor did a series on Ephesians. I believe it was last summer but our church going is kind of sporadic so I missed when he got to Ephesians 5. Just yesterday I found that the majority of the sermons are available for download and I'm going back through all the ones that are available and I'll find out what the view is on that when I get to that point.

As for the book, at first, I tried to take it all to heart and be the all submissive wife and basically let him walk all over me. My husband is one of those guys who if you give him an inch, he will take a mile and more. It eventually caused me to go into a very deep depression. I still have the book and it does have some good points but for the most part... It's just too much in my opinion. I can't really go completely there any longer.

It's all the rage in homeschooling circles. People distribute them by the case. I would have burned mine in a bonfire, but someone who was not as triggered as I was by it took it off my hands to write a critique.

Debbie Pearl in "Created to be his ___________" [Doormat] encourages a wife whose husband is committing adultery to dress up like a hooker and beat the OW at seduction.

ummm... what happened to 1 Peter 3:1-2?

The Pearls are the teachers that the Schatz' followed when they killed one of their adopted Liberian daughters by beating her with a plumbing hose until her kidneys failed. Godly discipline turned deadly - Parenting - Salon.com

I saw that the Schtaz's pleaded out on that murder. That poor girl. It breaks my heart.

I am utterly opposed to the kind of discipline given by parents who seize upon "spare the rod" and assume that a literal rod is the only thing that stands between their child and hell. My heart aches for those children in those homes.

This is the very reason why....IMO.....the use of the word "head" means "life source". If someone is following Godly principles.....even someone that doesn't believe in God.....there's a promise attached to that, as in so many of the proverbs. If a principle is causing deep depression (which, Atlas...you are not the first--or even second--person I have heard about having the same response to following this line of teaching)....it's not of God. Only sin causes destruction and harm to people.
