Slain in the "spirit"?

I was wondering if I could get a take on being slain in the spirit. I never really understood this and have been very weary of it. I don't believe that it talks about it in the scriptures. So for the people who do believe in it, what is the benefit of it?? How do you know that it is God doing it and not you being hypnotized or the power of suggestion? What does it feel like?? What is your take on Todd Bentley and the whole lakeland florida outpouring?? If you haven't seen or heard about Todd Bently I would encourage you to youtube him. Some of the stuff he does is a little disturbing, I don't want to sound like all religious or blaspheme the Holy Spirit, but why would the Holy Spirit tell someone to bang a cripplied lady's legs up and down or to kick someone in the stomach??

Instances of voluntarily falling before the Lord to worship or pray may be found in Genesis 17:3 and Joshua 5:14. References to voluntarily falling as the result of feeling overwhelmed by a divine presence are found in Numbers 22:31, Judges 13:20, Ezekiel 1:28, Ezekiel 3:23, Ezekiel 43:3, Ezekiel 44:4, Daniel 8:17 and Matthew 17:6. However, these verses seem to imply falling forward in humility, and it would seem there are no verses to imply falling upon being touched by someone.

But there is one passege in the Bible where people "fall to the ground" just by hearing the words "I am He". That is when Judas has betrayed Jesus and the soldiers come to get Jesus. This is what it says in John 18:4-6; (4) Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them "Whom are you seeking?" (5) They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them "I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. (6) Now when He said to them "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground. (NKJV) So often when people claim that falling backwards "by the spirit" is not biblical it is simply because of lack of biblical knowledge.

Instances of involuntarily falling before the Lord as the result of feeling overwhelmed by a divine presence are found in 1 Kings 8:10-11, Daniel 8:27, Daniel 10:8-11 (possibly implied), Acts 9:3-4 (also Acts 26:14) and Revelation 1:17.

Both voluntary and involuntary falling before the Lord can also occur as the result of a power encounter—a person feels that the power of God is overtaking the power of a demonic force that has sought to control or oppress him or her. References to falling in the context of power encounters are found in Mark 3:11, Mark 9:20 and Luke 8:28

Nowadays, God is doing direct deliverance with many by the "fire" of the Holy Ghost (think purge spoken of in John 15:2)...God is very gracious to be supernaturally cleansing people in this hour and is leading people to holiness....revival fires are burning!

But, God will not force being slain in the spirit on anyone...best way I've found to describe it is the feeling you have when waking up after a good night's rest.

You are fully capable of getting up if you wanted to, but you lay there for a while longer because your body feels so relaxed...you would just like to stay there and rest.

You gotta remember that if you ask God for something good, He's not going to deliver something evil upon you. The Holy Ghost's presence upon someone can easily overwhelm the body and make it so relaxed that you'll want to lay down.

The way you know it's God is because if you want to get up, or not fall down in the first place, He's not forcing you to. He'd like for you to rest and relax...God is good like that!

In charismatic circles, it is when a move of the Spirit of God overtakes you to the point that you fall prostrate (usually backward, hopefully with ushers catching) and are under the power of the Spirit for a time. Why charismatic circles and not, say, Methodist? Perhaps because charismatics are more open to such moves of the Spirit; for the Holy Spirit is a "gentleman" and will not violate your will.

The bible doesn't carry the term "slain in the spirit," although many events are used to validate it. Such as Abraham falling alseep/trance in Gen 15; Ezekiel's vision in Ezek 43:1-5. Many times it is simply verses that speak of falling to the ground in awe or praise, such as Rev 7:11. In all instances, it is from a powerful move of the Spirit of God.

I've been "slain" only once. And I have to say it was an unexpected experience, but a marvelous one at that. We have an older woman in our congregtation that I, and others close to her, like to call Mama. She's a fiesty Italian woman who can put you in your place faster than you can figure out that you're being put!

She is also a prayer warrior for the church. One service (after service during altar ministry prayer) she points at me and calls me forward. I didn't want to go, but out of respect for her I went. She told me that "God has a powerful touch for you." So I stand before her and she takes my hands. She began to pray in tongues, then just as quickly one hand moves to my forehead. I went down. Didn't want to go down, but I went down. Then the service around me "went away" and I was simply being ministered to. It was peaceful. The contents of that ministering are for me, so I won't go into detail here. I was "down" for about a minute according to my wife. (She has been slain during prayer with Mama twice in the past 8 years.)

Make of it what you will. I didn't know what to think about it prior to my experience. It was of God, that much I can say. And I can't say whether all such episodes, such as on TV, are real or "desired." That's all I can tell you on the issue; hope it helps in some way.

This is my PERSONAL take. I haven't really followed Bentley nor his "ministry." PERSONALLY, I get weary of healing ministries that use a lot of physical antics, almost to the appearance of violence. I simply can't imagine Jesus in the Gospels acting with the appearance of "violence" during healing.

My attention was drawn to him in 2008 when Lakeland Revival was big news. My discernment was to not watch this man -- I believe he was covered for a time on TV, but I may be confused with YouTube, because I didn't watch after that word to me. It was only about a month after that that he was found cheating on his wife with a staff member and, I believe, the revival was closed down while he disappeared (presumably to Europe).

Bentley was rebuked by the "Board of Fresh Fire" but Bentley would not submit to the committee. He remarried and is back in ministry.

Jesus cast out devils and there was violent physical action on the person getting delivered...this is about deliverance, and many have demons and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty...so many are going to flop around, kick, scream, and other things devils do when being forced out of someone.

This is normal as the devil doesn't go quietly...but he must go!

Yes, the devil usually find a way to stop revivals...and apparently Todd did not study what the scripture says about doin the wild thang with women that are not his wife, and when married not to seek to be loosed.

The end time revival is much bigger than one man...Todd has damaged his public reputation by his own actions so no need to feel sorry for the guy, as he'll still go to Heaven...he just won't be exalted by the Lord any further and will have to be small time now.

What's sad is Christians that won't support the revival God is moving us into...

Yeah but Jesus was casting demons out of people, not healing them.

Healing includes having demons cast out if they are present as devils often cause physical illness and sickness of every kind

Did Jesus or the disciples ever kick someone in the face or the stomach?? Did he ever ask them for money or tell them the more money you give the more likely I will heal you??

You you have absolute proof that somebody did this?

It sounds like you are on the verge of discounting the end time revival God is revving up over the short comings of men.

I got news for you...ALL people make mistakes and fall short and it's the devil's desire that people focus on what's wrong rather than what's right.

If you are looking for what's wrong...you will find it...seek, and you shall find, only this would be the devil providing his satanic anointing to see only what's wrong and blind any vision of what is right (what God is doing)

If he can get someone to focus only on wrong things, then he can keep them in bondage and they will not fulfill God's purpose for their life...which is a very sad state of affairs that many Christians are in.

But, going forward as God brings in people from the world...yeah, most need deliverance and have serious issues with embedded devils that will have to be cast out. Kickin the devil out is rarely pretty...but, giving cash to be delivered is not necessary as the Blood of the Lamb has already paid for that.

When it comes to ministering to wild people like this...most Christians and most preachers just aren't up to dealing with this so they'll do nothing but criticize.

Yes Todd Bentley tells stories about it all the time. He says things like the Holy Spirit told me to leg drop the pastor, kick a lady in the face with my biker boot, all kinds of stuff like that. Look it up on youtube it is all there. And he does this thing where he prays for God to make everyone drunk in the spirit. I was raised in the word of faith movement, and my mom went to many "healing crusades" (she had breast cancer) all of them basically did the same thing. 2 or 3 hours of emotional music, a love offering saying the more money you give the more faith God will think you have and he will heal you. Then they have their helpers go out and find people who were "healed" and bring them up on stage. My mother and I were at a Benny Hinn crusade and one of the staff members say her get out of her wheelchair ( she could walk just fine, she just would get tired and weak from walking long periods of time) he immedietly took us up on stage without even asking my Mom hardly anything about her condition and announced to everyone that she was healed!! Is that was Jesus would do??

Whether puposefully or inadvertently you have tied the Word of Faith movement to "healing crusades" and to "saying the more money you give the more faith God will think you have."

Word of Faith does not preach that the more you give the more faith you have. There may be some extreme preachers that use money as a tool in such a way, but to tie that to the Word of Faith movement is disingenuous.

This is a Word of Faith forum for WoF believers to fellowship and learn together. You carry a non-denominational icon, and as such you are free to fellowship or ask questions. Teaching or defaming our belief system is not allowed. You may have had bad experiences with other "healing ministries", but not all "healing ministries" are WoF; so I caution you to be careful not to disparage or defame Word of Faith. It is not allowed on CF, and we do not allow it in this forum.

If I'm reading too much into this, then accept my apology for being so firm. We have many who try to slide in here to preach against our beliefs. I'm simply being cautious. ;)

I thought revival was people repenting and coming to Christ??
Revival is the act of renewing or reviving.

Obviously the PRIMARY purpose of Christian revival would be to win the lost to Christ. Reviving the power of the Gospel message into the church when it has been neglected is also contained within the power of revival. It is about restoration of relationships with Father God -- the relationships of both believers and non-believers alike.

In today's society, if he kicked a lady in the face with his boot...he's going to be answering a lawsuit, so that may just be a tall tail told for theatrics which wouldn't be right (kickin or tellin the story

The Bible does teach laying hands on the sick...but many people that are Christians that follow these wild guys don't have much of a relationship with God in the first place and are looking for a quick fix.

Nothing wrong with having a good time in the Lord praying for each other and shoutin, dancin, and singin to loud praise-n-woship music. God loves it when a body of believers come together to seek His presence in one accord. God is moving greatly in these situations...

On the other hand, some preachers will get so far out there that they get off the pages of the Bible and nobody knows what they are doing. It doesn't necessarily mean the preacher is of the devil...it usually means the guy wants to "help God out a little", which will cause the Holy Ghost to withdraw since He knows how to run things and requires that we be willing to be led by Him as opposed to "helpin God out" with theatrics.

It's quite possible that your Mom was chasing the men, chasing the ministries...instead of entering in to God's rest and seeking Him for her specific situation. I know I ain't runnin around the country side lookin for someone to lay hands on me...cause I got the Holy Ghost right here with me and His WISDOM is what is needed to learn what is needed to get healed (in my case, stay healed as I've not been sick on over 20 years).

Nothing wrong with long sessions of praise and worship as God inhabits the praises of His people and most folks really need to soak in God's presence for long periods of time to rest in Him. We should be doing that frequently, if not daily, on our own in our personal prayer time.

Unfortunately, many Christians spend the majority of their time soaking in the entertainment / information of this world which is embedded with satanic thought and vision that will choke God's Word out of people's heart so they are not fruitful and end up oppressed by devils.

So, how's your Mom now? Did she recover or go on home?

I thought revival was people repenting and coming to Christ??

Is it...but there's WAY more to living in victory than simply repenting and becoming a Christian, or repenting and re-dedicating one's life to Jesus if having fallen away.

God is actually doing what appears to be far out stuff because many that are coming to the Lord have devils...when devils get kicked out, they don't go quietly and will make a scene so there's no reason to be concerned about that.

I recommend that you're focus be on what God is telling you to do in your life and on you growing up in the Lord yourself and not worry so much about what others are doing whether it be right or wrong

That night she thought she was healed. But the next morning she was so weak she couldn't even walk but a few steps. She still honestly thought she got healed so she went to the doctor that week and the cancer had spread to her bones and she passed away 2 months later. I forgot to mention that I am not angry or bitter at Benny Hinn or people that do what he is doing. To be honest at first I blamed myself thinking if I had more faith perhaps God would have healed my mom but in the end I realized that being a child of God doesn't mean that everything goes perfect and you never experience sickness or pain . Jesus did why should we his followers expect anything less. Oh and there is video on youtube of Bentley kneeing a guy in the stomach that had colon cancer. If you want to see it, just go to youtube and type todd bently colon cancer

I'm sorry. I'm really not trying to defame the word of faith movement, there is just some stuff that I don't understand about it. Such as the slaying in the spirit. I was told growing up if I questioned it I would be blaspheming the Holy Spirit so I was always afraid to ask people about it. I guess the churches we went to growing up were extreme WOF churches like Kenneth Copeland and Creflo Dollar. Sorry if I offended anyone:(

I was listening to Lester Sumrall talk about an experience with Smith Wigglesworth. They brought someone to Smith who was so ill they did not want to move them for fear of killing him. He had cancer and was very bad off. Smith reared back and punched the guy in the cancer. Really walloped him, and he died!

He came back soon and jumped up completely well. He punched someone in the neck with a goiter and they were healed.

You'd better be sure you're hearing from the Lord! In the training on the gifts, the Holy Spirit said He needs instant obedience in gifts of healing and workings of miracles. He will often call you to do something unusual (look at Jesus' unusual miracles). How about Elijah or Elisha?

If you wait, the circumstances can change or the anointing may lift.

If you're wrong, your ministry will be gone!

I've never actually witnessed Todd minister, but I do know that one who worked with him, Rick Joyner is one of the most anointed prophets around. His book "The Call" is VERY anointed. Obviously the enemy derailed the revival. I'd be very careful about what anyone says about it. Choose your words very carefully. You're better off not saying anything at all, than saying the wrong thing and bringing some judgment into your life.

We're to judge everything (or weigh it in the spirit). Someone invariably jumps forward and utters something unadvisedly and it's almost like opening the mouth of a lion who'll let you put your head in for a moment.

Consider that everything you write is recorded in Heaven. Repented sin will be blotted out when repented of, but we'd all love a good and wise report, wouldn't we?

I'll go with scripture on this one:
Titus 1:5 I left you in Crete to do what had been left undone and to appoint leaders for the churches in each town. As I told you, 6 they must have a good reputation and be faithful in marriage. Their children must be followers of the Lord and not have a reputation for being wild and disobedient.

1 Timothy 3:1 It is true that anyone who desires to be a church official wants to be something worthwhile. 2 That's why officials must have a good reputation and be faithful in marriage.
During an annointed revival, he couldn't even keep his pants on.

Again, I don't follow Bentley nor do I know him well. And God will forgive those who fall into sin. But His Word gives us guidelines as to who we should follow after in ministry. I don't judge Bentley, for he is God's alone to judge, but he does not match the criteria set forth for us to determine what a minister should be.

Does that mean that a divorced man can not be in ministry? God forbid. God forgives. But it is the circumstances around such events that give insight into a persons heart. And scripture covers these areas for our benefit. We should not dismiss scripture in these areas.

That's pretty bad a fella leading a revival couldn't keep his britches on...personally, I couldn't muster up any desire to be with any woman other than my wife, even if I tried! I mean, my equipment won't even work unless it's my wife!

But, I do think God was in it...but, obviously the devil was able to enter in and stop the revival and it's a shame that the guy fell for something trivial as sex.

Plenty more revival where that one came from, and with guys that'll keep their britches on!
