Hello :)

I am a big fan of Israel and the people, there is really almost no other country, which I respect so much. Trough the last years, I have learned more and more about Israel and now I would really like to learn Hebrew. Are there any good online learning sites on the internet? Please help me, I would really like to learn Hebrew, at the moment I just know some phrases, but I am really interested in knowing more than just some usefull phrases.

Thanks for the help! :)

Have you ever learned another language? How far do you want to go with Hebrew?

What is a good program for learning a language is really relative. Different people learn another language in different ways. So many programs seem to make the basic assumption that there is one best way for everyone. I think that is entirely ridiculous.

Hebrew is very different than English -- and thus, it is more difficult than learning the average foreign language. I think you first have to assess what has worked for you in general in learning other languages and let that be a guide to you. If Hebrew is the first foreign language you want to take on... then, you need to begin with a very basic program, and learn just the basics of the language. Where I am at, there is a Judaic Studies Department at a near by college that offer such a basic course for free.

After you have exposure to the basics, you have to assess what the particular challenge areas of the language are for you, and let that guide you on how to proceed. If language is not difficult for you, learning to read basic Hebrew will not be difficult at all... but learning to speak or write will be another thing.

You might also be surprised on what programs you can find at the library, that normally are very expensive to buy, which will give you a feel for the language.

My main point is, find your own way to learn the language. Don't let experts tell you it has to be done a certain way and only a certain type of program really works. And the main thing you want to keep in mind is, just how much of a commitment and how much work this is going to require, unless you have some kind of blessed talent in language or a unique language backgroud.

On a personal note, I think learning Hebrew is much easier than learning Russian (or even German). If you go to Israel and take Hebrew in ulpan, you can come out speaking Hebrew in six months - not perfect Hebrew, but confident and competent Hebrew. It's not a language that's too hard to get if you put yourself in the right environment.

I took four semesters of German in college, and I can't speak much more than three sentences.

That said, everything comes down to your motivation and commitment. I always recommend Hebrew from Scratch for learning conversational modern Hebrew, which is where Hebrew should begin (in my opinion). If you don't know the alphabet, pick up the Hebrew Primer from Berhman House Publishing. It's the best way to go.

Software? I've never done it. Hebrew from Scratch has accompanying CDs.

I am so amazed at my mom. She began studying Hebrew probably 10 years ago now. She is self-taught. Day in and day out she has sat and studied. She knows a lot now. I'll ask her about her study materials and let you know.

Of course I have learned other languages, as a little child german, later english and now russian. How far I would go - Hmm at least average hebrew, like to talk good enough to have a conversation, not only smalltalk , reading of course and understanding people. Maybe like my english skills, but I think this will take me very long. Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I dont have the time right now for courses and that stuff, maybe in a few years. Thats why I would like to start now trough internet, books and CDs.

Many Temples have Hebrew courses and a lot of them are available for non-congregation members.

The classes at my local Temple usually have several non-members attending every session and none of them seem to feel at all uncomfortable.

This is a good way to learn with others and get lots of practice speaking as well.

Shalom, Skyvrit.

I think the idea of what you're doing is nice. I just have a couple of questions regarding what you do.

First, does this online tutoring constitute a secondary job for you? I've thought about giving English lessons in Tel Aviv, but I'm afraid of how it would impact my primary income in terms of tax reporting and the problems of ti'um mas. Does this constitute simple unreported income, like most people take when they give private language (mathematics, piano, voice) lessons from their own homes or with their students?

Second, what kind of lessons do you give? Are they planned ahead, or do you structure it like a private lesson in which you use the learner's own materials to answer questions and direct them in directions of better learning? I ask because it's something that I've also done in the past. I gave lessons in speaking and reading Hebrew using news articles culled from online sources (such as HaArets or Ynet), and it seems that online students tend not to do the requested readings and preparation before online meetings. Do you have structured lessons to counter this? Do you focus mainly on speaking and exchanges or more on reading/writing?

תודה רבה
