So, I'm curious...what are all of us cool Georgians up to this summer? It's going to be a hot one! Post your fave Georgia summer activity or anything you have heard of that is good 'ole-fashioned fun in our region.;)

I returned home in Nov 2009 after 9 years in Ohio. One thing I used to love doing (when it was state run) was celebrating the 4th of July at Stone Mountain. (I've heard that since it went to private ownership that it is no longer like it was.)

stone mountain is still pretty ballin' but i don't know if they still do the same 4th of July celebration that they used to. i actually think that since it's become privately owned that there has been more money poured into it and they've been able to add and do much more. i haven' been there in a few years, but even since the last time i went i know they have added soo many more new activities and events to park.

did you like Ohio better than Georgia or were you happy to be back?

Both states have their pluses and minuses. I WON'T miss the snow and I DIDN'T miss the extreme heat.
I was born in downtown Atlanta, I just got homesick.

The heat is literally breaking records as i type...so i def understand that. i couldn't believe how much snow georgia even got this winter so i couldn't imagine ohio!

In the 9 years that I was there, we only had one unsnowy holiday season. It usually begins in Nov and lasts until April. It looks awful, all piled up at the curbs, dark, dirty, such a sight! The winters there can get as low as 19 below zero, so this winter here in Ga. was nothing :D

Oh my sheesh! 19 below! :frozen2:I don't even know what that feels like and I don't think I want to. All I know is that our state was not prepared for snow like that. Here in Atl. the entire city shut down pretty much. It was crazy fun. idk if anyone here knows where Inman Park is in downtown Atl. but that's where we went sledding and you would've thought the city had never seen snow before.

some of my favorite things to do in the summer in north Georgia include going to Lake Lanier, golfing with my dad, and riding my bike around downtown Atl.

What about everyone else?

Things have changed soooo much. I used to enjoy The Oldies all day concert that was held at Phillip's Stadium (I didn't hear of it being advertised last year nor this year), I used to love the Arts in the Park and the free ASO held in Piedmont Park and the season of concerts at Chastain Park. I haven't heard at all if these things still go on?
I've just heard of a new thing (at least no older than 11 years while I was gone) is the Screen on the Green at Piedmont, I'll have a one year old granddaughter that will go with me next year. That sounds like a lot of fun.

Things have changed...idk about the oldies all day concert at Phillips but this summer it's mainly like sugarland, Britney spears, Taylor swift, etc. :(

screen on the green is awesome. I'm going next week to watch sixteen candles with some girlfriends. as long as there's not too many teenagers there, it stay pretty calm although there were problems w/"rowdiness" in the crowd last summer.

some of the best concerts at chastain this summer include frampton, hall & oates, and steely dan.

as far as i know, the Atlanta arts festival is still going on, but that's not until the very end of summer i think. also the jazz festival was a few weekends ago and i heard good things about that. there have actually been quite a few free festivals around downtown lately.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll do some more checking to see about some of the things I remember being a part of summer in hotlanta.

Well, I was born in Atlanta, on P'tree Street in fact. Lived all my young years in East Point, moved to Marietta until I left home (as an original hippie, yea!! peace, love and all that good stuff).
I moved to Ohio, just in time for 9/11 (the plane heading in this directions!) and found I actually don't mind the cold at all. In fact, I like it. I don't really like the snow, it gets so dirty, piled so high and dirty, and stays for so long and so dirty! Yuck! But I like the cold weather. But when things just started falling into place for us to move to Ga., the home-sickness that I'd been feeling really blossomed and so we moved to Cartersville. Had a nice little 2-story starter house but we never grew any roots so a little over 2 years later, opportunities to move back to Ohio began falling into place and so here I am back "home."
I realized that I didn't miss Ga's hot, hot, hot summers at all, NOT ONE BIT!! But the winters were awful nice without all that dirty snow. I must admit that I'm not looking forward to this winter at all.

I have to say, that when I returned and found my way to Alpharetta, not too far from Cartersville and there was a nice Judica shop there in one of their strip malls, I was astonished! The last time I'd been in Alpharetta, before (I love saying this) the turn of the century (hehehehe, I love it!!) it was just a sleepy little ho-hum, almost back-woods place. It's grown! It's huge; and actually had a very nice "clean" look about it. Lots of really nice looking apartment and condominium communities. You picked a nice place to settle into by the looks of it.

Back when my 23 year old daughter was just a toddler, I lived in P'tree City and used to take her to a park in Newnan that was located next door to the water department. I was a wonderful place for little ones. It had a few "security guard" type men around that kept their eyes and ears open for trouble, there were 2 little playgrounds (for age distinctions), a large pavillion with picnic tables, vending machines, clean restrooms, and about a half dozen huge ceiling fans running overlooking a large water sprinkler. All that was surrounded by grass, trees, sidewalks, and other smaller cook-out areas with tables and benches. We used to have the best time there - 2 summers of lots of fun and it wasn't hard on the adults because of that big comfy pavillion. I wonder if it's still there? It was way too far away to go from Cartersville just to check on it.
I have a neice and some cousins who live in Macon but I'm not at all familiar with the city, nor with Valdosta. I do know that Valdosta is gettin' ya awful close to them vadalia onions!! Ummm yum!!!
Ooooh, I'm not looking forward to the snow that's gonna come.......

P.S.
Sorry for the book of memories.....

I grew up in Alpharetta, the part of which I live is now in Johns Creek. Went to Milton HS.

You're right that it's changed dramatically, though I'm not sure I'm in love with the proliferation of strip malls and the traffic congestion. All the amenities and restaurants are nice, though.
