In the respect and Awe of God. Not in the terrified and trembling of God.

Php 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Php 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Php 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure

Using this mistranslation has caused much harm to our Christain walks. We are not to fear the LORD. Rather we should be in awe of YHWH.

interesting passage:

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge..."

I disagree. Its not a mistranslation i don't think. We are told to fear the lord in many places and in many ways.

Heres Jesus on the matter.

Mt 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

In greek that word fear is "phobos". One of its definitions, the one I find best fitting is "reverence for one's husband". Seeing how the church is Christ's bride I like the fit of this definition. For I am not terrified of God, for He is my Father, and besides that, my God - is my Lord and King above all (Jesus the Christ).

Only those who are not saved need to fear God, But im not going to change the definition of fear to fit theology. What does fear God according to Jesus translate into? Does Jesus say awe God or fear Him?

Its basically what the 1st commandment is. Its referring to the level of awe and reverence we have for our Father in Heaven. Praise HIS NAME. JESUS I PRAISE YOU! HOLY KING OF ISRAEL! SEND FORTH YOUR SERVANT!

According to 1 John 5:10-13, I KNOW I have eternal salvation.

1 John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

SALVATION
As Taught in the Bible

What Must I Do To Be Saved?

In view of who Christ is and what He has done for me on the cross, it is my responsibility to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 16:30-31; John 3:16,18,36). This means I must come to Christ (John 6:35-37) and receive Him as my personal Saviour and Lord (John 1:12; Romans 6:23), realizing and believing the following facts:

The Lord Jesus is the only Saviour (Acts 4:12; John 10:9; 14:6). There is no salvation apart from Him.
The Lord Jesus died and rose again for my salvation (1 Thessalonians 4:14; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 10:9).
The Lord Jesus is able to save me (Hebrews 7:25; Isaiah 59:1; Matthew 19:24-26).
The Lord Jesus is willing to save me (John 6:37; compare 1 Timothy 2:4).
The Lord Jesus will save me if I trust Him and Him alone as my Saviour (John 3:16).

I also must realize that I am not saved....

...by good works (Isaiah 64:6; Ephesians 2:9; Titus 3:5);
...by trying to keep the law Romans 3:20; Galatians 2:16; James 2:10);
...by water baptism (Ephesians 2:8-9; Acts 16:31)

I am only saved by the grace and mercy of God through faith (Ephesians 2:4-9 and Titus 3:4-7). Faith is resting all my weight upon Jesus Christ (who He is, what He has done and what He has said). Nothing in my hands I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling!

How Can I Know That I Am Saved?

Because God cannot lie (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18) and because Jesus Christ is ever faithful (Hebrews 13:8), I do confidently and joyfully claim and rest upon the following salvation promises: Matthew 11:28; John 1:12; 3:16; 3:18; 3:36; 5:24; 6:35; 6:37; 6:47; 10:9; 11:25; Acts 10:43; 16:31; Romans 10:9; 10:13; 1 John 5:11-12.

You have to go through the school master first.. to understand what "believing on the name of the Son of God means" it is more than "I know His name is Jesus"..

Acts 28:23
And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

And after the school master we don't forget what it taught to us because only those that do the will of God belong to Jesus. The will of God is to love God with all our heart, love our neighbor as ourself, love our brother and forgive him 70 times seven each day if need be, love our enemies and bless them that curse us, and abstaining from fornication. If we do this we will do well, according to Paul.

Love does no ill will to its neighbor and for this reason thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (see Ro 13:10)

Everybody, saved and unsaved needs to FEAR God...there is a genuine fear that man must have for God. God is kind, loving, and merciful, but He is also fearfully holy, being described as a consuming fire. Godly fear is a proper and wise motivation for salvation and for Christian service.

"The fear of God is living with a moment by moment awareness of the presence of God" ( Larry Karsies). The fear of God has also been defined as "an affectionate reverence for God by which the child of God bends himself humbly and carefully to his Father's will."

In the verse you quoted (Matthew 10:28) the Greek word for "fear" is phobeo which means:

Strong's Greek Dictionary
5399. phobeo

phobeo fob-eh'-o
from 5401; to frighten, i.e. (passively) to be alarmed; by analogy, to be in awe of, i.e. revere:--be (+ sore) afraid, fear (exceedingly), reverence.

The fear of God is mentioned at least 24 times in the New Testament (Matthew 10:28; Luke 1:50; 12:5; 18:2,4; 23:40; Acts 9:31; 10:2,22,35; 13:16,26; Romans 3:18; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Ephesians 5:21; Colossians 3:22; Hebrews 10:31; 12:28; 1 Peter 1:17; 2:17; Revelation 11:18; 14:7; 15:4; 19; 5). To fear God is to glorify and worship Him as the eternal creator (Revelation 14:7). THE FEAR OF THE LORD (1) is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7); (2) is to hate evil (Proverbs 8:13); (3) prolongeth days (Proverbs 10:27); is strong confidence (Proverbs 14:26); is a fountain of life (Proverbs 14:27); is riches and honor and life (Proverbs 22:4). The root problem with the wicked is that they do not fear God (Psalm 36:1; Romans 3:18).
