ZENIT - Pope's Letter on 7th World Family Meeting in '12

I have copied below two key paragraphs #'s 2 & 3, below which give key insights into the Pope's theology and purposes. Note, how in paragraph two, the Pope quotes Genesis 1-2, as a theological basis for Sunday rest and worship for families, but does not mention that in Genesis 2 God created the Sabbath for rest and worship, not Sunday! And then in paragraph 3, the Pope describes Sunday in a Sabbath like fashion, but also describes Sunday as the "day of man", which is fitting since its origin is based in the traditions of churchmen, not God!

"Work and celebration are intimately connected in the life of families: they condition choices, influence relations between married couples and between parents and children, affect the relation of families with society and with the Church. Holy Scripture (cf. Genesis 1-2) tells us that the family, work and the feast day are gifts and blessings of God to help us to live a fully human existence. Daily experience attests that the authentic development of the person includes the individual, familial, and communal dimension, activities and functional relationships, as well as openness to hope and to the Good without limits.

In our days, unfortunately, the organization of labor, conceived and realized in function of market competition and maximizing profit, and the concept of feast as an occasion for escape and consumption, contribute to the break-up of the family and the community and to the spreading of an individualistic lifestyle. Thus, it is necessary to promote reflection and efforts at reconciling the demands and the periods of work with those of the family and to recover the true meaning of the feast, especially on Sunday, the weekly Easter, the day of the Lord and the day of man, the day of the family, of the community and of solidarity."

I'm not sure what he means by "the day of the Lord and the day of man" but I full agree with his intentions. We need to refocus our energy on what is important and renew ourselves in our Lord Christ Jesus.

I would venture he means, the Day the Lord and Man come together to bejoined as one.

I too like what he said.

Does this take the Pope of the SDA's Anti Christ hit list?:p

Don't you see how sly the Papacy is in substituting Sunday for the Sabbath? SDAs have been predicting this event for over a hundred years now. And now we seeing before our very eyes how it is playing out!! In Genesis 2, God created the Sabbath not Sunday, yet the Pope uses Genesis 2 as his theological underpinnings for Sunday rest from secular labor and for free time spent with family! That was meant to take place on the 7th day Sabbath not on the 1st day, Sunday!

No - in the second paragraph he is proclaiming Sunday as the Lord's day, as the day of Resurrection. In the first paragraph he is refer to the natural order of the world as coming from God...the liturgy of time. Somewhat related, but he's not proclaiming Sunday as the OT Sabbath.

Are you like the Pharisees and so hung up on legalisms that you forget the intent? Looks like it.

So what if the day of rest is celebrated on Saturday or moved to Sunday to honor the resurrection of Jesus? The intent is the same.

Just to be clear, not a Sabbatarian. Don't want to worry about tripping an electronic eye, starting a fire, and violating the Law, let alone driving. Worship whenever, whereever you are.

It's interesting, not sure either. Apparently the Lord's day is the day of the Lord. And day of man would be 6. IMO 'Lord's day' is everyday, keeping in mind that the very early church celebrated the Passover on whatever day of the week it fell.

This gives new meaning to prosylizing/transubstiation :)

A Jewish man lives into a Catholic neighbourhood. Every Friday The Catholics are driven crazy because, while they're morosely eating fish, the Jew is outside barbecuing steaks. So the Catholics work on the Jew to convert him to Catholicism.

Finally, after many threats and much pleading, the Catholics succeed. They take the Jew to a priest who sprinkles holy water on the Jew and says, "Born a Jew, Raised a Jew, Now a Catholic."

The Catholics are ecstatic. No more delicious, but maddening smells every Friday evening. But the next Friday evening, the scent of barbecue wafts through the neighbourhood.

The Catholics all rush to the Jew's house to remind him of his new diet. They see him standing over the cooking steak.

He is sprinkling water on the meat and saying, "Born a cow, Raised a cow, Now a fish."
