The Philosophy of a Successful Message Board?

What is required to create and maintain a successful message board?

So far nobody has ever done it in the history of the internet. Suggestions?

The StraightDope message board has, arguably, existed since the mid-90s when it was a BBS and migrated to a message board format around 1999. This board evolved in 2002 from 2 Christian boards that existed since 2000. Internet Infidels has existed for around that long though it has changed its name.

What exactly would a "successful" message board be to you?

I am applying to be a moderator of this forum "and only this forum" (no other forum). If I was to to actually be accepted to be a moderator of this forum and only this forum, "How would you like me to approach the "Philosophy" of this forum, as you as users of this forum, would like this forum to be approached?" This relative to being a contribution to this forum being a successful forum, and a gift to this message board?"

Well, yes, a lot of times I'm here to unwind and quite like the nonsense, I guess it is only for serious questions that it gets in the way, maybe my idea of a serious thread is someone else's idea of a total waste of time and vice versa...

Thoughtful and interesting discussions between thoughtful people is what makes a successful discussion forum.

To make a board successful it helps if you are one of these thoughtful people and have interesting things to discuss.
