When you touch, you are actually removing the male hormone "testosterone." Testosterone promotes overall well being, muscle mass, fat loss, facial hair, and many other manly things. It is also a proven fact that masturbation causes a decrease in strength and excessive masturbation can cause depression. Other than that, there shouldn't be any serious health risks...

Studies have been conducted on masturbation and testosterone levels, it does not impact it. Testosterone is produced on a daily basis insuring that the body remains within tolerable levels.

According to Dr John Harvey Kellogg, whom I trust more than any of the modern "MDs", if you experience several of the following symptoms...

Rounded shoulders
Weak back
Stiffness of the joints
Paleness
Acne
Heart palpitations
Fickleness
Bashfulness
Baldness
Confusion
Disgust at simple foods
Bed wetting
Nail biting
Consumption-like symptoms
Untrustworthiness

....then you're a chronic masturbator. You may disagree with him, but he still has his name on your breakfast cereal.

That's stupid. Masturbation is no different physiologically than sex. Do people who have a lot of sex experience these symptoms?

I don't see how masturbation could ever be wrong. I had a pastor try to tell us that it was wrong, but he never really explained why. I also heard the "if you think of people while you do it it's wrong", based on the "adultery of the heart" quote from Jesus, but I always interpreted that as referring to an actual intention to commit adultery rather than just merely thinking about sex. However, I understand that people's views differ on this.

Masturbation is perfectly normal.

But just to play Debbie Downer, compulsive masturbation in childhood is one of the behaviors most commonly associated with serial killers. It has a stronger association than the better known Macdonald Triad (cruelty to animals, bedwetting, and fire-starting.)

"In a chart of serial killer - childhood development characteristics - created by Ressler, Burgess and Douglas (1990), the three most frequently reported behaviors included day dreaming, compulsive masturbation, and isolation. .."

Actually it is not the same as sex because there is no pheromone interaction. ie Oxytocin is not present.

As for whether it is harmful or not, all I know is my cousin Willy went blind and grew hair on his palms from masturbating 7 to 9 times per day for decades.

If anything, oxytocin is involved in the female [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]. Not that big of a difference.

So masturbation becomes good when you can sniff a girl's dirty gym clothes while engaging in 'activity'. In an effort to spare myself of this embarising conversation, I think I am willing to deal with the side effects.

How many decades? Two? Three? Oh seven, I think I am fine, my great-grandfather made it until his eighth decade of activity and he was still able to see at a ripe old age of 92 when he passed so I've got good genes.

Um, no, Oxytocin is a neurohormone produced in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, and then is stored in the neurohypophysis of the pituitary gland. It is not a pheromone, and is not limited to women. Hooray for remembering what I learned in my physiology class.

Of course he did.

Fun fact about oxytocin: it is a powerful inducer of uterine contractions, but it does not have an appreciable rise in levels prior to labor or during labor. Weirdness, eh? Apparently its receptor is upregulated, but if that's the main reason why its action is increased is unclear. Crazy!

Also, more hormone fun-facts: the hormone calcitonin has no known function in humans, though there is a set of cells in the thyroid that are capable of making it. The only times you really ever see calcitonin levels rise is when there is a tumor of these cells. Odd. Other animals use calcitonin, but we don't. (Intelligently designed hormone, amirite?)
