Must you speak in tongues to be saved?

This is one of my pet peeves. NO you don't have to DO anything to be saved. When I first started going to church, I went to a church where they stressed "having to speak in tongues" when you get saved. It was almost like "speaking in tongues is THE SIGN you are saved". NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!! I saw people get so disappointed because they "just couldn't do it and didn't understand why." That is such a crock!

While we are on this subject, let me address another one. You do NOT have to fall down when some crazy evangelist goes around smacking people on the forehead! I NEVER fell down because I honestly believe that if I DO fall down, it will be an involuntary action. So many people put on a show of falling down and speaking in tongues. It makes me sick and I think it's a mockery of God's legitimate gifts.

Anyway, I am sorry to rant. This subject just really bothers me because I have been there and if I hadn't been so close to God, it would have driven me away. I have seen it drive many others away...:sigh:

A couple of years ago I was attending a church that had a "speaking in tongue" night where we were all to be blessed & at the end of the night we were promised that we would be speaking in tongue.

Out of about 30 people in the group that night, I was the only person who ended up not speaking in tongue.

I was very upset about this & I spoke to family & friends about it. I was advised that there was a good reason why I did not speak in tongue. I'm not good at quoting from the bible but there is a story where Jesus states that it is not necessary to speak in tongue & there should be no division between us & that we all need to understand one another etc. etc. as I say, sorry not so good at quoting directly from bible maybe someone could quote exactly?

Jesus never said anything about speaking in tongues, to my knowledge.

Most of what you can find on the subject in the NT will be in Acts 2, 8, 10, 19 and 1 Corinthians 12-14. Recommended reading for you.

9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread[d] from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

The gift of tongues is part of the toolbox of gifts and spiritual abilities that comes with the baptism with the Spirit that comes to a believer who is already saved. You have to be saved first before you are baptised in the Spirit. There are examples in Acts where unsaved people tried to operate in the Spirit and they came off second best (ie: the servant girl who followed Paul and Silas around, and the seven sons of Sceva). The Scripture clearly says that the person who believes and who is baptised is saved. Nothing else needs to be added to be Justified by faith. The baptism with the Spirit, including tongues are God's tools of trade to empower believers to go out into the world and make disciples.

The devil wants to discredit tongues in any way he can because it is a gift that builds up and empowers believers in their personal prayer life. Getting people to believe that they have to speak in tongues in order to be saved is one of the lies that he has put in the mouths of some of his pseudo christian prophets in order to deceive people and lead them astray.

When you are saved and baptised with the Spirit, you can speak in tongues. This does not mean that you must.

The sons of Sceva was a good example, but the servant girl not so much. She was speaking by the spirit of Python, a demonic/occult power. She wasn't trying to speak by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It was soothsaying.

Wondering though, what you you mean when you say, "a person must believe and be baptized" to be saved? What baptism?

One of the references about people asking what they need to do to be saved had the instruction to be baptised as part of it. What is meant is water baptism. So it seems that believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, repenting, and being baptised in water are all in the mix.

OK, thanks. I understand you now.

Sure, the gift of tongues is "necessary" or it would not be part of our spiritual arsenal. It may be optional—even a soldier with a rifle has the option of laying it down or not using it—but he has the rifle available to him because the military deems it necessary.

Nowhere in The Bible does it say that tongues is a requirement for salvation.

That is not the question (I don’t think :)). Tongues are necessary for service, not salvation. If you hire me to build an addition to your home and give me a hammer would you say the hammer is necessary to do the job, just as much as, say, a saw or crowbar? I can always use a wrench or any other tool as a hammer, but the hammer is designed for a particular job just as the gift of tongues is. I can avoid using the enablement if I so choose, and I can still go to heaven, but my effectiveness on earth as a servant will be seriously curtailed.
