I put a profile up for a while as a test, with no pic, as a woman. Extremely generic dull self description. Got a least a couple messages everyday. Makes me think the ratio of men to women on those sites must be about 50:1
You've got to remember that women are always in demand, men aren't. Even fictional ones. :p

Where women can "decide to stay single" and thereby be able to basically pick-and-choose offers, if men "decide to stay single" they are basically deciding to become celibate. Unless you are attractive, you will not be approached by a woman. Ever.

from a girls perspective...guys can be real idiots on dating sites. One site i'm on I specifically said I do not use the IM service there (because it messes up my browser), yet i still get guys trying to contact me on IM there. I also get nonChristian guys trying to flirt with me when its pretty obvious I'm looking for a Christian guy (IIRC I actually said just that in my profile too).

yeah if a guy isn't going to respect me by actually taking the time to read my profile, I doubt I can trust him to respect me otherwise.

Me an my mom joke that when I turn 27 and am still single, then I'll try one of those sites out.

But to be honest... I don't think I would. I mean... I don't know. Maybe I'll change my mind when I'm older but for now I'm actually pretty happy being single and wouldn't go on a dating site. Although... I'll admit that I am curious as to who'd be intrested.
But like I said, I'm only 19 and I think I live the single life a few more years. :p

Actually, there is a HUGE demand for "nice christian guys" to come in and be a "gentleman" (i.e. debt slave) for the millions of un-wed mothers and divorcees who've finally gotten past their bad-boyz stage. You're probably a little too young to have experienced this yet, but, soon enough, you'll be getting pursued by lots of aging, desperate women looking for the nice, quiet, sensitive guy to come in and clean up their mess.

...attractive and have millions in the bank and are a rock star/politician/gangster.

Wow, that's way too cynical even for me. Have you actually experienced this? If so I think your case is exceptionally bad.

There are a few gems who really look at a man's heart and character. I've met them offline. They're all married.

have you done it? what were your experiences?

I met someone from another country online and we got along pretty well and then started talking exclusively to each other. After about 3 years we decided to meet in person here in the states. We both agreed to pay for half of the ticket. She came and spent a little over a month here with me. It was nice, pleasant, good, etc but ultimately we found we had lost interest in each other. Not sure if it's because we had waited so long or some other reason.

We still keep in touch with each other because we're on a friendly basis, but if I could take back those 3 years "wasted" I would. Since her I've created a few online dating profiles but I refuse to provide a picture of myself until I speak to the person at least once on the phone. Which means my success rate is far south of zero.

If I were to get serious about it I would spend several hours making a nice profile that was as open and honest as possible (and safe) and I'd also be sure to post pictures. Without pictures you get nowhere and if you're profile doesn't stand out you'll not get past the pictures.

Glad I'm not the only one who notices that. Married or engaged. Or 10 to 12 years younger and that's a whole different set of issues.

True that it's either an age gap or the person is involved.. bites

I think if you're a girl using these sites (and I'm drawing on my female housemates experiences here) you're gonna need a lot of luck, a little faith and an unearthly amount of patience.

But I guess if you're gonna be dating guys at all you need all that anyway right?? ;)

i've got a profile on OKCupid too, but i don't even use it as a dating site anymore. I just go to do the quizzes and such.
I've looked around and it seems kinda slow. Like people created their profiles and left... haven't been on there in months. Match.com is like the best site i've been on and is like the most active.

it actually seemed with guys around here to be pretty popular, but not with the Christian crowd. hence why I'm not using it to find a guy :D

Same thing here. Everybody who appeals to me on OKCupid just made their profiles, closed the door and left. Enough to make a dating deist out of me! j/k

"Dating deist"... heh. I know what you mean.

Blind post again, didn't feel like going through 4 pages, but I've done it, and met a couple of really nice gals, and meet some "interesting" ones as well.

I find it ironic that I've met couple gals who I ended up dating that were on those sites, and not part of my search, so it's hit and miss on if you end up meeting what you really want too.

I tried several sites. OKCupid was hands down my least favorite. I hate that site. I had success with Match and eHarmony more so than any others. I know people hate paying for an online dating service, but I have found you most often get what you pay for.

I can't recommend match or eharmony over the other because they are so different. eHarmony matches you on what they see as compatible and send you a limited number of matches on a daily basis. However, for me, the matches were pretty much right on and I had at least a couple of matches sent each day that I thought were compatible to what I was looking for. Match is cool because it allows you search the site under a specific set of parameters on what you are looking for. You get more matches instantaneously that way. And it is a bit cheaper than eharmony.

As far as what I was looking for, which is a good Christian woman who is looking to find the one and not to just hook up, I thought eharmony was best for me. My best friend, however, has liked match much better in that he was able to search and look through hundreds of profiles to find what he was looking for.

Match does a free 3 day trial. You have to sign up for a month, but it doesn't bill your card if you cancel during the 3 day trial You can sign up and cancel a few minutes later. It gives you the full the days still, but does not bill you when the trial is up.

Also, match is free to set up a profile, search and look at other profiles, and even send "winks" to those who catch your eye. The paid membership gives you other benefits, such as e-mail, which is really the only way to contact people there. So if you want to contact someone that catches your eye, you have to be a subscriber. Also, the subscription lets you see whom as viewed your profile and other features like that.

I would suggest you make a profile and search the site for a bit before deciding if you want to go for a free trial. That way, you know if you have anyone on there worth chatting with before starting the trial. Then, you can exchange e-mail/cell phone numbers early in the conversation so you can continue talking with the trial ends.
