I have known a few strippers in my life, and I was thinking about the morality of it yesterday and I wanted to bring it up here and see what y'all think about strippers. I can see how it is a huge temptation for a girl to get into: it can pay better than most jobs could after receiving a degree even, it's very simple to get hired if you look good enough, the job security is just fine as long as you can handle doing what you have to do. I mean really the upsides are huge. The downsides are pretty obvious, having to bare your entire body for anybody at all to see, you have to deal with creeps, etc.

So how do you feel about strippers. Do you feel like they are all sinful and in real need of help? How about someone who is in a situation where she can't get another job, and it's stripping or homeless? Does that make it any better in your eyes? How about a stripper doing it to pay her way through college, so that she can get into a job that doesn't require her to strip in the future? Do you think a Christian can be a stripper?

I'm honestly more concerned about the girls who strip and their hearts, rather than the morality of it (although, if I'm honest, I guess I would say that sort of thing is sinful)...but really, I think too often a lot of heartbreak goes into someone becoming a stripper - and that's what concerns me most about it.

and yes, I think I a Christian could be a stripper...not the wisest thing and hopefully God would guide them out of that, but it's just like anything else really - not about to put a blanket on it and say no strippers are Christians.

I've heard of a lot of girls that stripped their way through college to pay the bills, but I've always wondered how that looks on their resume when they actually graduate and want a real job in their degree field.

The few strippers I've known were basically nice people, but were very messed up mentally/emotionally. One was in an abusive relationship with a small child and was heavily involved with drugs. The others had similar stories. All of them had bad a home life growing up.

There may be some woman who do it and enjoy it and are perfectly emotionally sound. But, I can't imagine there are that many that would fall into that category. Having strange men leer at/paw all over you night after night would have to get old fast.

I pray for the women involved in that industry. I've seen/heard about the damage it can do and it breaks my heart for them.

Can a Christian strip? Sure, but they're sinning if they do. Our bodies are supposed to be temples and that is a major way of defiling said temple, IMO.

p.s. I would rather be homeless, personally, than strip to keep a roof over my head. In all honesty - I would go to a day labor facility and try to find work that way first...or a temp agency...or anything but stripping. But, that's just me. ;)

A lot of women who become strippers to pay the bills in college keep stripping once they're out of college. The money just sucks them in. And given some of the influences like drugs and prostitution all around them, that's not a good environment to be sucked into. Are they in need of help? Absolutely.

So how do you feel about strippers. Do you feel like they are all sinful and in real need of help?
Well, everyone is sinful and in real need of help so that's not the issue. What's important is whether God considers it sinning. There may be more helpful verses but I like this: "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved." - 1 Cor 10:31-33. So yes, I think it's a sin.

How about someone who is in a situation where she can't get another job, and it's stripping or homeless?
Homeless.
Does that make it any better in your eyes?
Nope, but it's God's eyes that matter.
How about a stripper doing it to pay her way through college, so that she can get into a job that doesn't require her to strip in the future?
Oh well, if she/he has a good enough excuse then... No, sin is sin.
Do you think a Christian can be a stripper?
God can choose to save a sinner in which case there would be a transition period while the person is undergoing sanctification but eventually they would stop stripping.

Of course they're sinful and need help. They're selling sex, they're one step from being prostitutes (and in many cases, they ARE prostitutes, under the more acceptable term "escort" or "gentleman's companion" in some clubs). Who do you think their clients are? Sons, husbands, fiances, boyfriends, brothers, fathers; they're in an active business of disintegrating relationships, morality, ethics, decency. It's disgusting, on the part of both stripper and client, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves. A woman who can strip can flip burgers, she just wants quick, easy money. Should be illegal, IMHO.

So how do you feel about strippers.

I have a few thoughts on strippers. For one, I considered it for brief moments here and there, so I understand the interest (and desperation) on some level. I love all things dancing, so the enemy has for sure put that in my head that it would be not only a great way to make money, but also an enjoyable way to make it. It's not terribly difficult, either. Oh, except for eating away at those pesky things like self-respect and love for yourself. Basically, even in my darkest hours I could still see that you'd have to sell yourself extremely short by engaging in that kind of lifestyle... because it is a lifestyle. You don't really walk away from your job immediately after you punch out for the day -- we all know that. So, can you imagine what goes through a strippers mind on a daily basis?

I have seen and heard enough about it to know how damaging it can be to women. I have heard stories from bouncers of how many women need to get high in order to make it through a shift. Doesn't sound as glam. Also, someone else had mentioned how easy it is to make that transition over to prostitution, ugh. YES. That's another way the enemy works; figures you'd settle for living this way, why not try that. It's not so much a step-down from where you are anyway, right? And the money can be addicting, so very addicting. Basically, I see it as a huge trap, but one that women are willing to fall into. Sometimes, in cases where the woman has been abused, they really don't start off on the best foot anyway. Women like that are very vulnerable.

I have actually considered going to strip clubs to talk to the women just like a normal person, but have never done it. It takes a special person to do that and I really wouldn't know where to begin. I had read some articles on strippers and women who work at Hooters. Even while reading these secular works, I was horrified and disgusted. I once read how guys would toss money on the stage just to watch the women scrambling on their hands and knees to pick them up. If that doesn't make you feel anger, I'd have to question how you view women. Honestly, it saddens me that people feel the need to do this and to be caught up in it once in there.

As an aside, I have always found it repulsive to call strips clubs "gentleman's clubs." I don't know of a single gentleman who would be on their client listing.

Do you feel like they are all sinful and in real need of help?

We are all sinners in need of help; every single person, from the church pews to the guy front-center-stage in the congregation to the homeless person on the corner asking for spare change.

How about someone who is in a situation where she can't get another job, and it's stripping or homeless? Does that make it any better in your eyes?

It makes it understandable, but still not right. When people are in such dire straits, they are vulnerable already. I guess that's the time for the piranhas to take advantage. One of the main things for me (and I guess this goes into all other issues of the like) is, if there was no demand, there would be no supply. If you are someone who gets his kicks this way, you are contributing to a dangerous lifestyle for these women. If you have been to Bachelor and Bachelorette parties where stripping has taken place, you have contributed -- and if you still do, you are still contributing even now. I have been to such a party; never again.

How about a stripper doing it to pay her way through college, so that she can get into a job that doesn't require her to strip in the future?

As stated before, the money can get addicting. It doesn't change how damaging it can be to be there.

Do you think a Christian can be a stripper?

Yes.

I had a friend who worked in a topless bar. It was the only job that she could get (no she was not one of the topless waitresses but worked behind the bar). She was telling me about the special events when the men wanted to see more. She got locked into a room with a bouncer (for protection), the stripper and the man/men to watch. She was not allowed to leave the room until it was all over.
So is she sinning?
Well personally I would say yes. Now my friend is not a Christain so I knew that it was pointless to say anything to her but I did say a word of thanks to God that I never had to live that life. After all, I worked as a checkout operator for 4 years whilst I studied to get my degree. Not always easy with all the demands and not the best money in the world but I did survive.

But back to the main question - is stripping sinning? And should/could Christain women do it? Well I would certainly not encourage it nor do I believe that it is in anyway helpful to living a Christain life. Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:3-5 (CEV) "You are God's people, so don't let it be said that any of you are immoral. indecent or greedy. Don't use dirty or foolish or filthy words. Instead say how thankful you are. Being greedy, indecent or immoral is just another way of worshipping idols. You can be sure that people who behave this way will never be part of the kingdom that belongs to Christ and to God." The way people look at this profession says enough, Nobody looks at a stripper and thinks that she is of noble character. To many people first impressions are the most important. You can not win people's hearts to the Lord this way. Nor could you argue that your actions where benefiting anyone but yourself.

At the very cantre of it all, the actions of a stripper are for only 2 purposes - 1) for the sexual pleasure of the men (or women) watching 2) to make money for the stripper. These is nothing good or decent there. There is nothing loving or caring there. There is nothing that reflects God in anyway. It is purely for the sake of want (greed) and lust. Paul says in Galatians 5:19-24 (CEV) "People's desires make them give into immoral ways, filthy thoughts, and shameful deeds... No one who does these things will share in the blessings of God's kingdom. God's spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, paitent, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled. There are no laws against behaving in any of these ways. And because we belong to Christ Jesus, we have killed our selfish feelings and desires." Again, it is clear where your life is heading if you make a decision like this. I have never heard of anyone getting a "calling" from God to be a stripper. The Spirit does not work that way and as our lives are a reflection of the Spirit living in us, it is clear to see why.

Paul states in 1 Corinthians 6:13 (CEV) "You also say "Food is meant for our bodies, and our bodies are meant for food." But I tell you that God will destroy them both. We are not meant to do indecent things with our bodies. We are to use them for the Lord who is in charge of our bodies." When we become Christians we are giving up more than just our spirit to the Lord. We give up our body. Paul clearly argues in this chapter that just because we are no longer a slave to sin doesn't mean we can do what we want with our bodies. Far from it. We still have to face the consequences of our actions. Yes, sometimes it will be harder on this side of the fence. There is more money made in some areas on the other side of the fence. But money is not everything and it should not be an excuse forfalling into sin or leading others into sinful ways.

Blessings

I have to agree with many of the comments in the posts above and would add the following.
I have to be honest and say that I like the idea of stripping in theory. I think that between a man and a woman it can be very sexy, seductive, and enjoyable. It is an intimate experience that a couple can share and thus be a very positive thing. However, outside of this context, I think that it is only a ‘cheap’ imitation of that sexy, seductive, and enjoyable experience we want it to be. On the surface it might look and feel like the real thing, but it doesn’t take much to see behind the curtain to the truth. I imagine this is why alcohol and drugs are important parts of this scene as they delay or inhibit or ability to look behind that curtain.

There are often some interesting threads on this in the "survivors of the sex industry " section of this site.

At the risk of being a hypocrite, let me just say I believe strip clubs are damaging to both the girls working working there and the guys who go there.
People are prone to deceive each other and themselves in strip clubs.
The long term cost of them is very high.

So how do you feel about strippers.

I went to a strip bar once in Utah. I found the whole scene rather disgusting. Nervous chick doing her thing while a bunch of drunk guys at the table hooted and hollered. It didn't do anything for me but make me feel sorry for the girl.

I went again (here in Aus, this time) a few months back on the urging of some friends(one of these "you've got to go once" type things). The scene was a little different - it was actually more intense, with simulated sex acts on stage...and again - it really didn't do anything for me but make me feel disgusted. I spent the majority of my time outside or at the pool table.

I'd hesitate to date a stripper - I wouldn't want my woman parading her body around in explicitely sexual ways to (or with) other people.

Do you feel like they are all sinful and in real need of help? How about someone who is in a situation where she can't get another job, and it's stripping or homeless? Does that make it any better in your eyes?

I think that in most cases they've made a compromise for money. The goal is to illicit lust, right? So that's sinful. If it's stripping or homeless? If she really can't get any other job - then I'd say stripping is 100% better in the interim than taking the risks of being homeless. I've *been* homeless...and there are numerous dangers out there - I wouldn't wish it on *anyone* from some moral high ground - least of all a female. Does it make it better? No, strictly speaking. Just for her until she can find a different job.

How about a stripper doing it to pay her way through college, so that she can get into a job that doesn't require her to strip in the future? Do you think a Christian can be a stripper?

I think a Christian can be a stripper if there really is *no* other employment she can do to support herself/kids. I would say that a Christian would have qualms of conscience over it and would jump at the chance for a different job if it becomes available.

As for the college question - are there really no other viable options for the low income person of female gender in general?

Regarding Christians stripping - I think it depends on how "broken" the person is and would venture a guess that it tortures them that they do it in the first place, but either don't know how to get out or don't believe they are worth more than that as a person. New Christians, especially, would struggle with this, I would think. Taking a judgemental attitude about it probably furthers their belief that they are worthless.

I think stripping is sin. I think most christians would agree with that. But a lot of women fall into it because they don't have the money to make ends meet, or whatever. It's sad that women even have to fall into that. That said, it still shouldn't exist, but it's probably more a sign of the times and the overall problems in the world than it is necessarily of its own specific sin. And unfortunately, some women do do it because its either strip or die homeless. But some women in some countries become prostitutes because they feel it's either sell themselves or die homeless/hungry. It doesn't make it right or a good, it just means they are in a desparate situation.

And for those of you who think I'm crazy because I walk around nude women at nudist resorts, the reason is because there is a difference between nudity and sexuality. You can be nude and not be sexual, and you can be sexual and not be nude. There's nothing inherently sexual about taking a shower, and yet a woman can get pregnant/have levels of sexual intercourse with her clothes on (not as likely, but still possible). The strippers are doing what they can to arouse men's sexuality, and that's where the sin is.

But honestly, it starts with people pressing into God and seeking change. There are so many factors involved with this stuff. If the economy picked up, a lot of women wouldn't ever consider becoming strippers, which means some places would probably have to close down. But anyway...

I would never personally go to one, nor have I been to any (a female one, or a male one), or allow one at my own staggette, but I'm not really morally opposed to it if it's the person's choice and they aren't doing it under duress or something.

At the same time, the misappopriation of the term 'dancer' by the community really, really bothers me. Burlesque might be an art form, but I cannot be convinced that taking off your clothes is an art form, especially when you can do it drunk.
