If my friend has a cannabis card, which makes it legal in your state, is it a sin?

I feel that it is natural and God gave it to us. Why would God create it if it was not made for this purpose. Hemp and Marijuana are not the same plant either. Also if you use a vaporizer you cause your lungs zero harm. So is it still a sin? My heart feels that it is not?

What are your opinions?

Okay... we are *not* under law, everything is permissable, not everything is beneficial. We can get in serious trouble with God if we do something bad, but we do not live under a white list/black list system of static checks and balances. Life is dynamic and fluid, what is in the heart that matters.

Laws can be interpreted endlessly.

Perspective matters: what is right for you may be wrong for someone else.

There are, obviously, some gross sins, but even some of those are hard to say, because situations can be dynamic. For instance, murder is bad, but killing as a soldier or cop would not be, if it is lawful.

We are born with minds and are expected to use them. Further, Christians have the heavenly mind of Christ.

We do not have a calling to police others, though we do have consciences and some things are clearly bad which we can judge on.

Why would marijuana be sinful to use if other far more serious drugs used for pain relief or psychiatric care are not? Well, in some cases it is simply because we want to be law (of the *land*, big difference) abiding citizens. But, where one has a lawful right to use it -- that is a Heavenly right too.

So where is the confusion?

Still, it could offend some with weaker consciences, so I wouldn't promote it to them without a very good reason.

In general, drugs are a crutch, in my opinion. And I would watch relying too much on any crutch, it can make us lose focus on grace from God.

Between God and you I dont think it is a sin. Like Freeport said there are alot more dangerous and stronger drugs that people take for prescription that are alot worse than grass. And as far as it tempting you with earthly desires and all that such I guess it depends on you, it didnt do anything like that to me when I smoked. I can tell you this for sure though, no BS, no questions asked, 100% truth. If you smoke weed ILLEGALLY it is a sin. I know this from personally experience. Since three days ago I was a pot smoker and I did it illegally, recently I prayed to God about whether or not it was ok and to answer me. My answer was in the form of the police busting my house and being charged with 2 felonies and a misdemeanor and thrown in county jail for a entire day. It was blown way out of proportion and I will likely get all of it cleared off or at least deferred but I can tell you right now that it is not worth it. Stay away from it unless you legally need it. We are supposed to obey the laws of the land in order to represent Christ in the best way possible even if we know it doesnt harm us or anyone else. I felt compelled to respond directly too this considering what has happened recently and I pray to God that you and anyone reading this will learn from what happened to me. Praying for you man and please keep my family, fiance, friends, and lastly me in your prayers as well! God bless!

its a drug...how does this sound...yea that christian gets high or does drugs with his friends...as a police officer i would arrest your butt for having it on you...even if it might be not "Against your state" it is still against federal law so you can still be arrested by federal agents and federal officers...it smells so nasty as well...its not even classy...God created a plant and people are misusing and abusing it..its just like how God created sex and are abusing that..just because its not a crime against the state...is it still a crime in God's kingdom yes...as well weed and other drug substances can cause you to experience demonic influences and manifestation and hallucination...do you want to go on a demon ride..these things alter your mind and leave you targetable to the enemy.

Does it honor God's temple- you? Does it do damage to your lungs, brain, or any other part of your body? Is it against the laws of the country? If yes, then yes, it's a sin.

Someone made the point it is against federal law. (I actually recall, now, on reflection, Obama was saying not to bust end users but to go after distributors. It seems foolish to me.)

I am generally sympathetic for people, where they are following Jesus and being merciful in their heart... but a lot of Christians follow a religion of condemnation and so they live by a far stricter standard.

Dependency on any kind of drug is not being dependent on God. Obviously, people have varying levels of faith. God is gracious to the humble.

God has the strings on everything: people who condemn someone for doing drugs for their problems, then themselves rely on them obviously are hypocrites... they are thinking creation is in control and God does not see them, forgetting how bad their life can go and how God is the one in control of that.

The problem is simply people looking to find a high from some plant, as opposed to God. With psychiatric meds it is actually far worse - except for critical cases - as people get addicted to that stuff and believe lies about themselves which trap them into a life of slavery to unbelief. When more serious problems come up they find they do not have the store of faith to heal or save them.

A big part of the later problem is it is far more subtle and complicated, but as much as a lie... as those who involve themselves in more simple deceptions.

But, God is gracious to the humble and gives allowances to those merciful in their hearts.

Pharisees... no. They are locked in a self-repeating cycle of condemnation, rejecting grace and power though having a form of godliness.

No it isn't a sin. But it's like drinking. It's not a sin to drink, despite what some want you to believe. However being a drunkard is a problem. If someone smokes pot for a medical issue then there is no problem with it. If they smoke pot simply to get high then there is a problem.

The only issue is that it is against the law and we are expected to obey the law. Unless you are in a state that permits it. As far as your body being a temple of the Holy Spirit, true it is but the warning is referring to sexual immorality not anything and everything you can possibly do.

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
- 1 Corinthians 6:18-20

It's funny because in the United States the very men we hold up as being great Americans and our "Founding Fathers" all grew and like the other aristocrats of their day very likely used marijuana. And no it wasn't just "hemp" for fiber. The history of marijuana criminalization in the United States is actually pretty fascinating.

What is wrong to do or not is relative according to people's own standards. This is very important. Very Pharisaical people are extremely limited in what they can do, and are continually sinning.

Important thing to notice.

Very critical thing to understand. God gives grace to the humble.

Someone pointed out it is against federal law even in states that promote it. IMO, that should be worked out. I do not smoke marijuana nor even have the desire to... but would far rather marijuana be used for pain and psych problems then the utter foul stuff out there people are relying on.

There are exceptional cases. You should obey the laws. The original poster is in a sort of legal grey area, though last I heard from Obama administration was feds were directed to not target end users in these states.

Your perspective matters on what is wrong and not. We are called to use our minds. If you believe what you are doing is wrong, you don't have the confidence to do it... so it is wrong. All things need to be done in faith.

I am definitely not very concerned about pot smokers over Pharisees, even if pot is against the law, however. I have no desire to smoke it myself.

Pot smokers, after all, did not crucify Jesus -- Pharisees did.

That is mind bending for people to consider a lot of times... because the flesh wants to judge people on very base standards they know inwardly are wrong.

The bigger problem I see in your case is actually you were suspending your judgment. That opens a doorway for the dark powers to slander you. You are redeemed by Christ, however.

I do not believe it is a sin, unless it is causes you to sin. It's the same way I view drinking alcohol. Drinking alcohol isn't a sin, but it is when you become so intoxicated you start sinning... telling lies, becoming violent, stealing, and trying to fornicate, and etc. Same should be applied with marijuana. If is causes you to sin, then yes it is a sin, obviously

Once again comparing marijuana to alcohol, you don't want to become addicted or have a dependency, which would be sinful. I don't know if you ever been around a drunkard or stoner (a pot head), but it's not what God created us for. Take my word on it.

You'll have varying views on this matter. Some will say it's a sin, b/c it hurts your body and your body is God's temple. As some have said, that verse was talking about sexual immoralities. Then you have obeying the laws of the land, but what if the law changes or you live in a place where it's legal? Then others will say using drugs is sorcery. Since sorcerers/sorcery (is listed as those who will not enter heaven) is translated into pharmakeia; which is where we get our word pharmacy. I believe when we do a biblical exegesis, we'll see it cannot be applied to be witchcraft, divination, black arts, and etc. Unless your friend is calling on evil spirits though that is highly unlikely.

Not to rant even more, but I use to be a stoner, and that's just about all I did. I abused it so much that it started giving me panic attacks (also b/c of prednisone, though that's a whole other story) and one night when I had a panic attack I vowed to God that I'd stop if he made the attack go away. I have learned the hard way not to become addicted, and unfortunately I broken my vow and asked for forgiveness and even asked God to act as if I never made the vow... for I did so foolishly and imprudently without knowing the seriousness of vows.

I hope this was of some help.

God bless.

What are your opinions?

On sin in general: you don't need a teacher. I am often surprised people ask basic questions on morality. Love, mercy, compassion... over sacrifice. Christians have an internal voice guiding them. Situations are dynamic. They should not live in fear, but in love.

There's a lot of lost puppies out there. Somebody has to reach them.

A lot of Christians don't sit around and contemplate on the teachings of Jesus. They talk about Jesus, but they never really think on what He taught. It can get mind bending. How can someone speak up Jesus and obviously never consider His teachings?

Real faith is about faith. It often goes against herd mentality. Real faith brings happiness and peace. You know what you are doing. You have to make tough choices sometimes, and don't always have people's confidence, but you know what is right and what is wrong.

I am constantly hearing from people who don't like "Jesus". Why? Turns out, they never even understood Jesus, never heard His teachings, never even the basics. And they are often raised "Christians", if not always.

Instead, they were raised by people who really 'want to be teachers of the Law'. They create a huge range of black and white, 'do this' and 'do not do this' rules... they have group mentality. It is always 'us and them'. Bad guys and good guys. Never mind 'love your enemy'. The temptation to do this was so strong and is so strong Paul reported in the NT he had to correct some of the Apostles on this.

Then, of course, their lives spin out of control... and they can never figure out what is wrong. All the little things go wrong. Sure, maybe they usually don't end up in jail, but their life becomes a living nightmare. They find that they went for godliness... and rejected the power. So, when they need that power... it is gone.

They sail fine until they actually have to really depend on God. Then, they discover they don't have faith to get the solutions from God. They were relying on Law and what they have "done for God" instead of simple trust.

John well writes 'you do not need teachers', that 'you have the Holy Spirit'... is there a real good reason for someone to smoke pot in a state where it is legal? I do not know. I know some cancer victims have used it. Definitely not the most pressing problem when great masses live in horrible fear and slavery to sin... full of slander, false accusations, against people outside their groups or just about anyone they can aim that cannon at.

Creation is very, very small in God's eyes. Problems most people have, they shouldn't. They blow them up and embroil themselves in them. They stop remembering God exists.

I am constantly seeing people with severe problems God could solve, but there is nothing which can be done for them because they don't try and believe. It is frustrating. "Mental problems", sick relatives, sickness themselves, and so on. They don't look to God, they look to creation.

Not much one can say without making them angry. They've never seen a miracle in their life, usually, or blind themselves to them when they do see them.

Thankfully, in reality, most Christians live pretty happy, normal lives. Or, a great number do. They get along with people. They point people to God where those people are at, gently, with mercy for their unbelief and not asking them to jump through a bunch of hoops to be accepted.

Marijuana must be modified to remove harmful chemicals that causes many deadly illnesses from men, women and children. Only then can it be government-approved when it has the lower toxicity equivalent of cigarettes.
:liturgy:

Have you checked the list of ingredients for cigarettes lately? Known ingredients. There's all kinds of stuff in them that are trade secrets. If the goal is to make marijuana chemically safer your target should NOT be cigarettes.

Thereisnogreaterlove, Maybe this will put it in better perspective for you.

"Would you sit down and share a joint with Jesus? If its "not a sin"..it must not be a sin for him either?...right?

Don't know about anyone else but I would. Just like I would sit down and share a meal and wine with the Lord.

I think it also highly depends on the amount and frequency of use. If it were completely legal, mind you. Trying a small amount infrequently would probably not be so bad. Smoking every day is probably a bit much. In the same way as alcohol, though I probably wouldn't partake even if it were just as legal as alcohol, largely because most of the frequent users of weed I know are losers and their being losers seems very much tied to their frequent weed usage.
