To work from home.

Lost my job a few months back due to medical emergencies. Luckily I'm getting unemployment benefits since it wasn't my fault - my wife got sick (she's on the mend. :) ). But I realized I really don't like working for someone else and would like to work for myself. I'd prefer to work online, but every idea is welcome. If it's something that can work in real life that could be good too.

Okay, I'll give this a week and the best idea gets a million. If I decide that it's something I will try, I'll send you 10 million. That should just about wipe me out, lol.

God Bless, everyone!

Avatar. remember me! this is my first post back from Teen Challenge! ^_^

let me see. I would say working for God is the best idea you could ever have. :) There is a wide range of missions you could do, including internet, street evangelism, through the church, etc.

First, i would say be very careful before you get into anything online. Yes, people are making money working from home doing what they know how to do best.
For example, some people love to write and they either start a blog and build the blog till it starts making them enough money to survive on. This normally takes some months even years depending on what you decide to write about or how unique it is.
Another example, you research a market niche that is not saturated online and build a shop to cater to that niche. There many affiliate companies online that would let you promote products and get a commission from making sales.
I think i would stop here. If you can tell me what you have in mind, i might be able to share more information with you. God Bless.

Hi AvatarI have an idea - it came to me just a little while ago. It involves webcams, the internet, and software that alerts you when any movement is detected. You could offer companies and individuals remote monitoring services. Then, you set the webcams up at their sites, configure the software to alert you when any status changes happen. You could set it in all kinds of ways, convenient to you. Your office would then be a sort of a control center for remote monitoring and notification services. You could make a nice business out of this... And with the kind of revenue generated, you could support yourself, and the Lord's work rather nicely. I'll be happy to help you with more techincal ideas. :)

This may sound stupid but doing housecleaning can rake in some cash. You can advertise yourself in the paper or wherever you can. You can set the rate at how much money you get. You have to be strong to do this. You can also screen the people you clean for. You go and visit and if they have a huge mess of a place you can tell them I don't do clutter or some reason not to do it. Try to get neat people. It makes the work easier. It is still hard work. When you wonder where to start cleaning in a home just pick anywhere. Just an idea. Men do housecleaning, too.

Greetings and sorry to hear about your plight, job loss and your wife being sick.

I have been retired since 2003 from the Postal Service [and no, I never went "Postal" on the job, though I know those that did].

Have you ever thought about developing a web site so that others that might be going thru what you are going thru might be helped?

My oldest daughter's husband developed a site concerning his ambitions and quit the job he had to devote full time to it.

I am ignorant of web site developement myself or I would have on greek/hebrew studies and the Bible which I post a lot on CF.

Sorry if this isn't much help but I pray for you and yours for a whatever fruitful endeavor that you come up with.
God bless.

Alright here is some ideas. When I first found myself unable to work due to health reasons, I decided there had to be someway to make money online. I became a freelance writer and virtual assistant. I started working for a company called Get a Freelancer, once I started making enough to have a good weekly income, I then ventured out into the world of Freelancing to Guru. Guru taught me how to write professionally, to build a reputation and to put together SEO so that the you can charge the higher fees. Then I moved on from there to Elance, where I built a solid client base, and started learning about getting out on my own, however it was hard to do since I was now making more than I did when I had a "real job", now I am a freelancer who works strictly for me, I blog, build websites and flip them, write for paid article forums and make a genuine income where I now make more than my husband who has a thriving construction business of his own. This job takes time to build a reputation but there are some people who pull down thousands of dollars (average is about 38,000) working as a freelance writer online.

Greetings and thanks for asking.
I started with the P.O. back in 1976
They offered early out in 2003 so I gladly took it. [also the year the Lord entered my life coincidentally].
I ended up taken care of my Dad for the next year as his cancer progressed.

I got to be with him almost up to the moment he passed away on election day 2004.

I hope the OP doesn't mind me interjecting here.

I too am sorry to hear about your situation....and know the situation well....as I am the one that is sitting in the chair and my husband having to take care of me and work. He does insurance but at the moment...that business is not doing the best. Anyway, he has gotten into a networking and is working it full time. By next week...prayerfully....after just 3 weeks of doing it we will be making $10,000--honest money. If you would like more info....just pm me! I would gladly pass along the message.

Well avatar. the job best suited to you depends on your personality, are you right or left brained?

If you are right brained(like me) then you are creative. if thats the case why not try your hand at blogging, site or game designing, even art! theres stacks of money to be made here>deviantart.com tho be careful what words you use in the search box.

If your left brained then your more mathmatical, analytical and organised. Why not try hiring yourself out as a database maker, a graph maker, a project manager, or i can think of heaps of kids(like me) who could do with an online math tutour!!!

and remember, what ever you go with, your services could be free, and you can reap the income from online adds.

If all else fails then you can always sit on the road near your house with a piece of cardboard reading "help im unemployed" xD

I'm not sure if you have community colleges but we do here. What about going into some kind of training of your choice. In America we have financial aid which covers the cost of your education up to a bachelors degree. I would suggest a Community College that takes 2 years for you to be trained for a new job. Pick the career of your choice and study hard if you like that sort of thing. Where I live you can also get student loans to live on.

Hi Avatar  I am sorry about your job and your wife's illness. I work at home on a computer all day for my company. I started working from home the beginning of August. It gets rather lonely being in a room by yourself with a computer. My dog comes in the room, but only to get me to go get him a treat.

I would suggest doing something that involves people and animals. Right now there is a big market for dog sitters/dog walkers. One of my neighbors recently quit her job and has started her own business doing this. She is volunteering at a animal hospital and has had flyers made that she is available to dog sit/and dog walk. She is building up her client base this way.

Most people do not like to leave their pets at the kennel when they go on vacation. Many are opting for dog sitters to come into the home to look after their furry friends. Many also like the idea of someone coming in during the day to walk the family pet.

You would need a reliable car, and may need to be bonded since you will be getting people keys to their homes. If you already have a pet, your could let your vet know that you are interested in doing this and he/she may be able to send some clients your way.

Another idea would be to go back to school and enter the medical field. You can be a nurse making very good money after two years of college. You may even be able to get financal aid to pay for most of your education.

I will be praying that the Lord will lead you to the right profession. :prayer:

How about being a gardner? You can plant flowers, trees, bushes and more. Then you just come back as needed to water them. This might be a seasonal job. The other part of the year you can earn good money snowplowing. You will need a van and garden tools. A truck with a snowplow on it, too. Maybe you can rent them?

Gah, sorry to hear about your situation, bro. Not sure what you do or what your skills are but depending on them, some ideas are:
  • Freelance computer programmer. Sites like ELance enable programmers to bid on projects people have, small and large.
  • People need help with Excel and Word templates for their businesses, and some Access database work is available if you have a website from which to advertise such services.
  • There used to be a need for people who could read/edit books and transcripts but don't know much about that of late.
  • Medical transcriptionists are also in need. A bit mundane I imagine, but I've heard of a few who've been successful at it.
  • If you're into the stock market, variants of day-trading exist for the knowledgable (not something I'd jump into without both interest and expertise though).
  • Help desk people are needed for various companies. Have to search for them, but there is a need for those who can receive and handle help calls from home ("contract help").
  • Cost estimating, if you know how to do it. Right now there is a huge need for people with estimating experience who can work on a contract basis from home. Requires expertise in the industry however, and usually some special estimating software packages.
  • There are a number of companies who sell retail goods on line and set up "members" with their own web sites and advertising to sell their products (SMC, for example). A few companies like to advertise on Christian radio - health drinks, vitamins, beauty supplies, etc.
  • Might look into the Trump Network - a new multi-level marketing program that's getting good reviews (I hear).
General ideas:
  • If there is some "niche" market related to what you're best at, most experienced doing, some out of the box creative thinking might turn into an idea for doing something no one else wants to do or might not have either the experience or tools to do.
  • Is there something in your resume that might help a company who needs it but who is also needing to shed overhead costs - costs you might offer to help them shed by doing it on a contract or as-needed basis?
  • Try a number of things - if you get a "hit" on something, however small that works, seek ways to expand on that success.
  • Find something "under the radar" that people need but won't advertise.
  • Additional education may be a thought if you've exhausted all other avenues - though it's an expense rather than revenue in the short term.
  • Do nationwide job searches (Careerbuilder, Monster, etc.) for jobs in your field of expertise. If you find one in, say Alaska, there may be ways/options to do the job remotely.
If I think of anything else, will post again.

Gonna check in occasionally for some tips myself. :)
