Okie-doke --- um --- thank you."Flying squirrel" is its common name. "Pteromyini" is its scientific name.
"Flying snakes" and "flying lizards" are common names, too, "Flying snakes" are actually called "Chrysopelea", whereas "flying lizards" are of the "Draco" genus.
Flying Fish are called "Exocoetidae".
They're all only "still called" flying creatures as their common names. Their scientific names don't even hint at powered flight.
Would it matter?Sorry, aint in the dictionary...
Has it occurred to you that a flying squirrel doesn't fly?
Yet it is still called a 'flying squirrel' --- (unless they've recently changed it).
This was never corrected --- (as far as I know).
Same for 'flying fish' --- they don't 'fly' --- they 'soar' --- or 'glide' --- or something.

Same for Plu... okay ... skip that one.
(That one was corrected practically overnight.)
Excuse me, but a bull frog didn't come from the mistaken belief that a frog was a bull, did it?Both of which are specific kinds of flying.
Although you probably shouldn't be hanging your hopes on colloquial layterms for various animals anyway. A bull frog isn't a bull, a dragon fly isn't a dragon, a spider monkey isn't a spider, and a bald eagle isn't bald.
Yep, common names are full of inaccurate adjectives and comparisons. Luckily, scientists have better ways of determining what an organism is or is not than "what they happen to be called by the general public."
I'd probably name it in your honor and call it Whocarus hesperacus. What wouold you call it, if you saw it?
Would it matter?

A spider monkey didn't come from the mistaken belief that a monkey was a spider?
And yes, a bald eagle is bald.
Like with this?Well perhaps, evidently, not to you. I studied hard, and I actually do care about correct English usage.

I don't need to 'make up words' for that --- this will almost insure I won't be:... but dont expect to be taken seriously.

Although I have a feeling you're talking about Archaeopteryx (sp?).
No --- I don't realize that. And do you realize that soaring and gliding are types of flying, and as such, there is no mistaken belief that a fish or squirrel was flying?
...Wikipedia said:The "flying" part of its name is a misnomer, as flying squirrels are incapable of sustained flight, instead they glide from tree to tree at long distances, with flights lengths recorded as great as 90 m.
Just like the sun 'looks like' it is rising that scientists like to use to say the Bible is wrong? The mistaken belief is yours in believing that it would even matter anyway, because even if gliding and soaring weren't types of flying, the fish and squirrels get their names because they would still look like they were flying, just as a dragonfly looks like a dragon and a spider monkey looks like a spider (although, in a very very general and simplified way).
Well, I suppose, if you paid me enough, I'd name it in your honor.Archaeopteryx flew.
But yes, I would be interested to see how you'd classify it.
Beats me --- I'm still trying to figure out if Hostess Ding Dongs are a cake or a candy.Reptile or bird?
No --- I don't realize that....
Just like the sun 'looks like' it is rising that scientists like to use to say the Bible is wrong?
Or the moon "shines"?

Something like Whocarus alunyel.Beats me --- I'm still trying to figure out if Hostess Ding Dongs are a cake or a candy.
(That jingle is a little before your time.)

Sorry if that came off like a rant. It was really in response to the following posted by AVET:I have an idea..how about stop posting on a Bible Christian forum!
I'm tired of you "scientists" telling me you know something one day, then revoking it the next.
If I remember correctly, "flying" occurs when gravity is overcome by lift, and thrust overcomes drag; but that applies to airplanes, I guess. That's useful for differentiating what type of flying is taking place, sure. It's not so useful for your argument, though.
So I won't get a "staff action" memo.So why is anyone who disbelieves the veracity of the bible called a scientist?
