"Flying squirrel" is its common name. "Pteromyini" is its scientific name.

"Flying snakes" and "flying lizards" are common names, too, "Flying snakes" are actually called "Chrysopelea", whereas "flying lizards" are of the "Draco" genus.

Flying Fish are called "Exocoetidae".

They're all only "still called" flying creatures as their common names. Their scientific names don't even hint at powered flight.
Okie-doke --- um --- thank you.

Has it occurred to you that a flying squirrel doesn't fly?

Yet it is still called a 'flying squirrel' --- (unless they've recently changed it).

This was never corrected --- (as far as I know).

Same for 'flying fish' --- they don't 'fly' --- they 'soar' --- or 'glide' --- or something.

Both of which are specific kinds of flying.

Although you probably shouldn't be hanging your hopes on colloquial layterms for various animals anyway. A bull frog isn't a bull, a dragon fly isn't a dragon, a spider monkey isn't a spider, and a bald eagle isn't bald.

Yep, common names are full of inaccurate adjectives and comparisons. Luckily, scientists have better ways of determining what an organism is or is not than "what they happen to be called by the general public."

(That one was corrected practically overnight.)

"Has it occurred to me" good grief.

Has it occurred to you that those are popular usage terms, not ones intended to be scientifically precise? Next you will complain that the sea horse isnt a horse.
Dont get me STARTED on Chinese words and what they say vs what they mean.

So what WOULD you cay of an animal that plainly has feathers but also has teeth, and runs about with no indication at all that it every planned to fly. Bird? Reptile?

You keep saying that science is "myopic", which I take as you doing what we call "projecting", but anyway.....you theocreos are myopic aobut this sort of thing. The divisions we see today were not always there in the past! The folks came over on the mayflower hadnt sorted out into Dems and Repubs yet either.

At one time there were animals that did not fit either of todays "kind" of reptile, or bird.

What wouold you call it, if you saw it?

Excuse me, but a bull frog didn't come from the mistaken belief that a frog was a bull, did it?

A dragon fly didn't come from the mistaken belief that a fly was a dragon?

A spider monkey didn't come from the mistaken belief that a monkey was a spider?

And yes, a bald eagle is bald.

I'd probably name it in your honor and call it Whocarus hesperacus.

Although I have a feeling you're talking about Archaeopteryx (sp?).

Would it matter?

Well perhaps, evidently, not to you. I studied hard, and I actually do care about correct English usage.

It matters to me personally if I use words correctly, but then I clearly have different standards that I apply to myself than you do to yourself.

If you want to make up meanings for words, I guess you can, but dont expect to be taken seriously.

A dragon fly didn't come from the mistaken belief that a fly was a dragon?

A spider monkey didn't come from the mistaken belief that a monkey was a spider?

And do you realize that soaring and gliding are types of flying, and as such, there is no mistaken belief that a fish or squirrel was flying?

The mistaken belief is yours in believing that it would even matter anyway, because even if gliding and soaring weren't types of flying, the fish and squirrels get their names because they would still look like they were flying, just as a dragonfly looks like a dragon and a spider monkey looks like a spider (although, in a very very general and simplified way).

And yes, a bald eagle is bald.

Thank you for so readily showing my main point.

If you are going to suggest that a flying squirrel doesn't fly because it glides, then a bald eagle isn't bald because it has a covering layer of feathers on its head.

Some cosistency would be nice on your part. Rejecting definitions that hurt your arguments, while accepting only definitions that help your arguments, is not intellectually honest.

No --- I don't realize that.

Just like the sun 'looks like' it is rising that scientists like to use to say the Bible is wrong?

Or the moon "shines"?

Why skip out on the first definition provided by answers.com? Again, you are focussing solely on definitions that support your argument while completely ignoring those that don't.

Archaeopteryx flew.

But yes, I would be interested to see how you'd classify it.
Well, I suppose, if you paid me enough, I'd name it in your honor.

Something like Whocarus alunyel.
Reptile or bird?
Beats me --- I'm still trying to figure out if Hostess Ding Dongs are a cake or a candy.

(That jingle is a little before your time.)

That's useful for differentiating what type of flying is taking place, sure. It's not so useful for your argument, though.

Bad arguments, I agree (the bible refutes itself much better when one doesn't rely on such semantic twisting). But I'd say it's more non-scientists than scientists who say such things. So why is anyone who disbelieves the veracity of the bible called a scientist?

They've already been named, Archaeopteryx and Microraptor.

Let me rephrase, what "kind" are they?

I didnt say you made up words. You seem to make up meanings tho, if the meaning isnt in the dicitonary.

Stay on topic, going off topic is as useless as going off the meaning of the words themselves.

I have an idea..how about stop posting on a Bible Christian forum! ;)
Sorry if that came off like a rant. It was really in response to the following posted by AVET:

I'm tired of you "scientists" telling me you know something one day, then revoking it the next.

I was trying to make the point that we put up with more from AVET and other creationists here than he does from us. Sometimes you really have to hammer a point home for AVET to get it.

If I remember correctly, "flying" occurs when gravity is overcome by lift, and thrust overcomes drag; but that applies to airplanes, I guess.
So why is anyone who disbelieves the veracity of the bible called a scientist?
So I won't get a "staff action" memo.

I wouldnt worry about those, but I would say the bible is wrong if it says something perfect was built by the hand of man. Perfectly round, and perfectly dimensioned in all ways, accurate to infinite decimal places.
