I have the 1861 version that was re-published by Baker publishing of Grand Rapids Michigan in 1967. It has scripture references and illustrations throughout. It is a black hardcover with a blue illustrated dust jacket.

I recommend going to a used or antique book store and looking for it, or something similar. Finding the right old book is sometimes half the fun. ;) You being in Southern California should have no trouble finding stores to search.

You may even find an 1861 version, who knows?

When you look for a book of this kind sometimes the older ones are really worth the search. They just don't print them like that anymore.

It was just a few weeks ago I went through the same process of trying to find a good copy of Pilgrim's Progress to read, one that would last years and I could re-read every year. Below you'll find a very nice, collectors edition of the work.
Amazon.com: The Pilgrim's Progress [LARGE PRINT] (9780890514405): John Bunyan: Books

After some thought I placed an order for the title above BUT, I took the kids to the local used bookstore and just after placing the order and while browsing I found a large print hardcover edition of Pilgrim’s Progress that had never been opened. The price was $7.99 so I scooped it up. The binding is tight, brand new tight, the pages clean and it even has a ribbon marker. What I like most about this bookstore is the collection of theology works it has, they purchased a few small book collections from ministers and one large collection that contained everything from Greek to Hebrew interlinear texts and Jewish commentaries on the Old Testament in Hebrew. It’s an awesome bookstore.

When I went to pay for the small stack we collected he charged us $5.99 for the whole pile that included the kids books and my new Pilgrim’s Progress.

You might want to visit a local used bookstore and shop around.

Peace.

jm
PS: I canceled the order before it was shipped.
