Genesis 16:2. Sarai said to Abram, GOD has not seen fit to let me have a child. Sleep with my maid. Maybe I can get a family from her. Abram agreed to do what Sarai said
It is a big temptation to give God a bit of a hand to meet our needs and deep desires.
David was persecuted by Saul and twice he had the power and opportunity to DELIVER him self from this affliction. But twice he said God forbid that I should kill the Lords anointed. He waited for God to remove the sadness and pain, and to exalt him.
On the other we see Abraham and Sarah who didnt wait for Gods time and so they tried to help God fulfil His plan and promise, it wasnt His TIME or WILL, and so they ended up causing even more pain by having Ishmael.
For us it could be the pain of waiting for God to grant us a spouse or a job or remove some painful situation.
We all have the POWER and ABILITY to help God, we could go down to the pub or club and find someone who would meet our emotional needs, but what pain it cause us (unbeliever is not Gods will).
If you are good looking you could have had many opportunities of meeting a dear potential spouse, but of course it isnt the good looks that finds you a spouse it is Gods TIME and CHOICE.
We have in fact chosen to follow Gods plan, rather than to find a quick fix for our pain.
When we hurt we must cry to God and rely upon His mercy as David did, and then when the time is right God will remove the pain and replace it with blessing. The Blessing of the Lord makes one rich and adds no sorrow with it When we wait for Gods time and choice we shall WEEP with JOY and be OVERWHELMED by His grace and mercy. Be strong and dont give in
