  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When I see the "we have the correct church" arguements I always think of these verses!

12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Peter; and I of Christ.
13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40 For he that is not against us is on our part.

Peter is shown here as one of the twelve apostles as an equal with them. And not as being chief of any apostle. So the concept of Peter being the first head of the church is false according to the Word of God.

Rev 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Cephas, James and John. These three were called 'the pillars' Why!

I think men screw everything up. The only reason I trust the Catholic Church is because of scripture and Apostolic Succession, in these I believe the Paraclete works to protect the truth and I have always found proof for Catholic teachings. ;) (awaits stick in eye).
Men screw up scripture & apostolic succession, too.
Do you think you could make it with just God's help, if the RCC turned out to be not what you think? You'd have to get over having been so deluded & figure out how to live with an RC wife, but you would still have God.

(stick sharp enough for ya?)

It wasn't just the three but all twelve apostles. Jesus chose twelve disciples to train; spread the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and be witnesses of His ressurection.

Acts 1:20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

What I find puzzling in this fundamental theology where all one needs is scripture and guidance from Jesus is why the Apostles?

I mean, if Jesus only intended to have the bible and people find Him for guidance then why even bother with all that Apsotle stuff and bothering to wander around with a bunch of stupid and arrogant men?

IF this is all you truly need then why didn't Jesus simply write the bible and pass it out along the way?

Jack, all of us have tradition. All of us. All churches have it. It is important to the understanding of scripture. Sola Scriptura is a praxis that merely assigns primary authority to scripture. Kind of like the benchmark to what all else has to conform. That's it. Jesus compared to scripture. The Apostles compared to scripture. The ECF compared to scripture. Sola Scrptura does not void tradition nor does it ignore tradition.

Yes, in fact Sola Scriptura states that scripture is the supreme authority. That doesn't imply that there is other sources of authority such as tradition.

Why didn't he assign 50 apostles and write a much longer book to make it all much more clear. Why didn't he directly state " you all need to follow apostolic succession and follow the pope in the future?." Yes this is all speculative, like your argument above.

The Catechism uses scripture as proof.

IF it did, the RCC would be embracing Sola Scriptura in stead of being one of two denominations (RCC and LDS) so very passionately against it and supporting rather "The Three-Legged-Stool" (as Mormons call it).

Actually, when I studied the Catechism with my teachers, I did what virtually no Catholic ever does - I actually looked down to the bottom of the page, to that very, very tiny print where a reference is occasionally given (but rarely quoted). In nearly all the distinctive teachings of the RCC, there was either a telling VOID of any Scripture at all - SHOUTING the Scriptural baselessness of the teaching, or if one was given at all, it either had nothing whatsoever to do with the issue at hand or actually seemed to undermine it.

Yes... your three legged stool again. If you have ears to hear you will. If you have eyes open to see then you will. The Catholic Church has survived 2,000 years and nothing you can say or imagine will change that the Catholic Church will be here when Jesus Christ returns to Judge the living and the dead and Jesus will be proud of His Catholic Church and embrace her and all those in Her. Maybe even you and me Josiah, God willing.

I always thought the RCC believe a Parousia of Jesus already occurred. Is this before or after the 1000yr period?

But then RC's and non-RCs have always been divisive on Revelation ehehe.....Merry Christmas all!!!

2 Thessalonians 2:8 and then shall be revealed the Lawless-One, whom the Lord shall consume to the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the manifestation of the ParousiaV <3952> of Him

James 5:8 be ye patient! also stand-fast/sthrixate <4741> the hearts of ye, that the Parousia <3952> of the Lord has-neared/hggiken <1448> [Matthew 24:3/Reve 19]

Show me where Jesus explicitly states anything, and I'll show you 6,000,000,000 denominations that reject it.

Merry Christmas!
