If Obama wins (and it would not surprise me if the Bradley effect wins the day and McCain get in) IMO it will tell the world that the American electorate are prepared to look beyond someone's skin colour for the highest office of the land. If Obama wins and his presidency is a disaster I suspect it would set back the next black person, (especially one who is not bi-racial but looks more like Sidney Poitier) or non white running for the office 50 years.

I don't think so, ones voting for him know he has a great task in front of him. Although all McCain/Palin voters will say I told you so, not keeping in mind all the clean up he has to do from Bush.

I have to say this is the first election I am excited about. I'm so ready to see the goodness and change that Obama can bring to our country. :)

Popular vote is by the people.

Electoral vote is by the Senate and Congress.

Sentate and Congress are to vote according to the popular vote of their state. Do they have to... NOPE!

Does it really matter if the American public votes??? I knew there were loop holes the government could use to get what they wanted, but not this.

In 2000 Bush LOST to Democrate Al Gore by popular vote (BY THE PEOPLE), but won by electoral vote (Senate and Congress).

If Obama loses... make sure you take a look at the popular vote vs. the electoral vote.

As pleased as I am that Obama has won, I'm wondering how he'll cope with the huge expectation now on his shoulders that he really will deliver change. He still has to govern within the same structures and with the same civil servants (or whatever the US equivelant is called) that W Bush did and that McCain would have had to. Change will be a long time coming.

There is also the fear that as with the 1997 general election here people discovered that New Labour was awfully like Old Tory and this lead to the incredible disillusionment with politics which we have today in Britain. If the US08 elections inspire us to anything in the UK I hope it will be to political engagement en masse by the genral public.

I am greatful Obama has won and hope that he will be able to bring change. His victory speech showed great leadership.

The House has majority vote for Democrat and now possibly Senate. If this happens Republicans will basically have no say. I'm not sure how good that is, too much of one thing, but Obama will definitely have favor with his changes.

As a Christian I find it difficult to be happy that Obama won. I think the American public have been had.

'As a Christian'? Christians should feel contrained to vote for/support McCain simply because they are Christian?

I'm glad that Obama won...I watched his speech and it was great

I wasn't all that bothered until the results started coming in, and then I wanted him to win.

I also think that John McCain was very gracious in defeat...he gave an excellent speech, too

As a Christian I find it difficult to be happy that Obama won. I think the American public have been had.

I completely agree with you.

*I have huge problems with the fact he wouldnt denounce his racist pastor.

* Also his views on abortion, that even if i child survives an abortion they should be killed after.

*Im also very concerned about his continued lack of judgement, rezko, farrakhan, Ayers. Not to mention the lipstick on a pig comment. Also the wonderful comment about him not wanting his daughters punished with a child.

*this point has nothing to do with being a christian but meeting with terrorists with no preconditions seems crazy to me.

* Gotta wonder why terrorist groups hamas and hezbollah are backing him.

*looking at the cabinet he is choosing, it looks like a clinton 3rd term.

I agree Mccain wasnt a much better choice than obama but atleast mccain did one thing right and introduced palin into national politics.

Finally the media worship of obama is making me sick. OK i can understand some people who are extremely left wing like chris matthews and his ive a got a shiver up my leg lol. But with are news outlets that have been conservative such as the times newspaper pretending they agree with him. Obama is to the far left so why are conservatives pretending socialism is great all of a sudden.

I have been following the elections since the primaries started and so stayed up on election night, i was upset by the result but managed not to cry, though i know many christian friends who did. I was pretty down about it for about a week. But i know no matter how bad things are God is still in control. christianity still grows in communist china.

I was quite surprised about that, actually. People are getting their news from Jon Stewart and SNL and professing to be knowledgable??

I think there are some that are putting a slant on the video and using it to claim that Obama supporters are stupid (not saying you're saying that) which is just as reprehensible as those who claim all McCain supporters are stupid. But it's so depressing to see how much information is gleaned from left-wing "news" sources and chain-letter emails as opposed to being genuinely informed. The media really did make it happen this time. That's worrying because we haven't democratically elected the media.

Yeah the people in the video are not stupid, if you look below there are full statistics from the poll 50% were college graduates (university). Its trying to point out that people who got their news from CNN/MSNBC, or the new york times could cite lies about palin but didnt know facts about the candidate they voted for. Also the way the media blames everything on republicans you cant blame people for thinking they control congress when they dont.

The media even vilified Hillary to get obama to win the primaries. The left wing media treated Hillary like a republican. I guess there wasnt much difference between her and mccain.

That is one thing about this election, ive become friends with a lot of Hillary supporters, who have left the democratic party due to the treatment of Hillary. They voted mccain in the elections because they were moderates or because they were appalled at the sexism in the media towards both female candidates. I never thought i would have been defending a clinton before the election.

I was hoping Hillary would win the primaries, she did win the popular vote but not enough for the nomination. many conservatives were going to vote for her over mccain because she was so close to him on policy. I personally liked Hillary saying she would obliterate Iran if they attacked israel. Much more preferable than obamas ill give israel away to the muslims.

Though I think this may be a paraphrase of what was actually said, I'm sure it was a little more nuanced than that. That said I'm continually amazed by Christian's acceptance and even condonement of violence and the slaughter of men women and children. So different to the Christianity I was raised with.

Hilary did take a more hawkish (and imo counter-productive) position on Iran. Obama has signalled that he may attempt negotiation over the "war on..." approach which has historically been such a failure. Peace would be nice, in my personal opinion Obama's approach is the more likely to succeed.

Here is the exact quote:-

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran (if it attacks Israel)," Clinton said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."
"In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them," she said.
"That's a terrible thing to say but those people who run Iran need to understand that because that perhaps will deter them from doing something that would be reckless, foolish and tragic," Clinton said.
Her comments appeared harder than a week ago, when during a presidential debate she promised "massive retaliation" against any Iranian attack on Israel.

and one link http://www.reuters.com/article/wtMostRead/idUSN2224332720080422
there are many just google clinton obliterate iran.

On negotiating with terrorists and dictators i think we know how that works out.

Peace does not mean there is an abscense of war. The was suposidly peace in Iraq before we invaded but people were being tortured and killed and buried in mass graves.

No that was the worst thing he did. And likewise Palin brought out the worst in the Reuplican voters, witness the racism, jingoism and xenophobia that she whipped up at her rallies.

The spectre of Palin 2012 presidential campaign makes the blood run cold. Thank goodness that America decided to vote in a statesman rather than letting another parochial anti-intellectual into the Whitehouse.
