Obama has called McCains suspension of his campaign erratic..but the country was on the verge of a financial meltdown and the Treasury secretary personally called him and ASKED him to come back to help drum up financial support. Obama's grandmother is merely ill..not a big deal..everyone's grandmother gets ill. Why does he have to suspend his campaign? Can't he campaign in Hawaii? Doesn't the country need him now? Will people not hearing his calm, soothing voice for a couple of days cause a widespread panic?

I am feeling the family values and Christian love in this thread!

"In the last few weeks, her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious. It is for that reason that Sen. Obama has decided to change his schedule on Thursday and Friday so that he can see her and spend some time with her," Gibbs said.

I like seeing Obama care about the grandmother who did much to raise him, visiting her when she is seriously ill at the age of 86. You think this shows the wrong priorities?

Not a big deal? She could die, and you want him to not visit her? And what would you say if he continued campaigning and she died, that he doesn't care about his own grandmother who raised him.

I don't think we'll see the attack machines trying to make political hay out of this one. It would be suicide. And if they did, I bet McCain would step in and ask people to be decent human beings.

You know, for a while I actually deluded myself into thinking that people wouldn't try to attack Obama for VISITING HIS ILL GRANDMOTHER WHO IS 86 YEARS OLD. Apparently I should have just kept on being cynical.

What if she died while he kept campaigning?

I am simply pointing out the hypocrisy in the media. The country could be on the verge of a meltdown and millions of people could be affected..thrown out onto the street and losing their jobs and healthcare..and the Sec. Of Treasury calls McCain to come back to Washington to try to help a bill to pass and yet he is considered erratic by the media..Here we have Obama suspending his campaign because one person may be affected?
Then I guess everyone agrees McCain was not erratic by suspending his campaign.

Then people shouldn't attack McCain when he was trying to save hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people from a potentially devestating situation.

According to the AP, she's said to be very seriously ill and likely close to death.

"Citing the family's desire for privacy, Gibbs would not discuss the nature of Dunham's illness. It seemed likely that she was close to death, as Gibbs said that "everyone understands the decision that Sen. Obama is making."

Trying to make a political issue of this is beyond desperation. It's truly pathetic.

In respect to Bootstrap's thread, I'll move this here.

So which one of our right leaning friends is going to be the first to call this politically or racially motivated?

Did mccain tell obama just to call him if things get really bad?

I wonder if obama is at her bedside trying to get her to repent for being a typical white person racist.

Not making a political issue out of it at all. I am simply pointing out the fact the media try to paint McCain as erratic when he was called by the Sec. Treasury to come back and try to get legislation passed for a situation that could have caused hundreds of thousands of people to lose their jobs/healthcare and lord knows how many suicides/heart attacks..etc.
So it is agreed that McCain was not erratic for suspending his campaign and trying to prevent a major catastrophe?

Not making a political issue out of it at all.

... he says, then proceeds to make it a political issue.

Here's why the two cases are different:

1. John McCain goes to Washington to Save the Country

- To lobby for a bill that does not pass
- To inject presidential politics into the bailout
- To sit in on committees he was never a member of and say basically nothing at all
- To promise - then fail - to deliver the Republican vote
- To negotiate with the Republicans to add enough pork to the bill to buy congressional votes in the good old fashioned way
- To demand that the other candidate also suspend his campaign, and that the campaign should be suspended indefinitely until the Paulson bill passes
- To change his mind and participate in the debate after all, saying that the bill was basically in the bag when it was not

2. Barack Obama visits his sick grandmother

A grandson visits his sick grandmother who was very involved in raising him and to whom he gives a lot of credit for how he turned out.

It's true, both involve taking days off of the campaign trail. McCain got in the way of a process that was working very well without him and left everyone shaking their heads and calling him erratic. Barack Obama is just visiting his sick grandmother.

That's exactly what you're doing.

I am simply pointing out the fact the media try to paint McCain as erratic when he was called by the Sec. McCain is one out of a hundred senators; Obama is one out of two grandchildren.

McCain is not the Republican minority leader nor the Republican whip nor is he even on any finance or banking committee. What was his special expertise that he and only he could resolve in the crisis that would necessitate his suspending his campaign and that he would also call for Obama to suspend his?

What did McCain actually do to prevent a major catastrophe, besides vote and grandstand? What did he do that 99 other senators could not?

So it is agreed that McCain was not erratic for suspending his campaign and trying to prevent a major catastrophe?
No, apples and oranges; the personal and the political.

Sorry dude shows you are grasping for straws. John McCain has actually worked across the aisle. The Dems didn't want to pass a strictly Democratic bill. Paulson asked for his assitance tto try to get people onboard. He came back and tried instead of saying hey..I will call you if you need me. McCain came back and did his job..in case you didn't know..he is being paid to be a Senator. And in case you didn't know, Obama is the one that came in and blew up the meeting at the White House with his partisan rhetoric and Pelosi didn't help with hers right before the vote.

Show me where McCain was in favor of pork.

Sorry once again Dems are shown to be hypocritical. Hundreds of thousands of people could have been affected by a potential economic meltdown..suicides..heart attacks..people losing their homes..a lot more than a single person. I am simply pointing out McCain's behavior was not erratic. He suspended his campaign when there was a lot more at stake in terms of number of Americans being affected.
