Why are so many people so worldly?

They are obsessed with the newest trends, what's "in," what's the new "movement" or "cause" to push on everybody else. It's all about this world. Well, this world is temporary. I live for the eternal one.... Just a rant I needed to get out here, around folks who can understand my position.

I am foremost among those who love the world. But after I commit the sin, and realize what I am doing, I just don't get it. What does this world have to offer? Why am I so caught up in trends, in how someone looks, etc.? It's all for naught when you die!

But, I do sometimes feel like I'm the only woman who doesn't like buying shoes until she has to, doesn't care about name brands, new trendy clothes, or buying expensive purses. $20 for a purse is high enough to me! lol Ugh. I don't wear furs (because I don't believe in animals being killed for their fur), I'm not really into jewelry. My husband married cheap.

Oh, I used to be into all that trendy stuff in my late teens, early 20s, but I guess that usually changes when you get older and have children. I have to keep up with my kids' clothes because they grow out of them so quickly. lol Anyway, I'm babbling.

People give me strange looks all the time when they ask for my cell phone number, and I tell them I don't have one. Or when they talk about the latest espisode of teen idol on TV, and I tell them that I've never seen it, because I don't watch TV. It's kind of a conversation killer, some people don't seem to have anything else to talk about.

I don't watch much tv either except for Rockies baseball and some news, and sometimes the history, discovery, and home and garden type channels. Sometimes I see in the other board I'm part of, people naming celebrities/actors/actresses or bands and I'm thinking, "who or what is that?" LOL

Thats sort of like me though I have a cell phone but I only use it if I go out of town which I guess is strange for a person like me since most people my age are enslaved to their phones and if you took them away for one week they would just die. If someone askes me for my number I have to say "I don't know, let me brush the dust off of it and look".

Worldly as in caring too much for earthly pleasures instead of focusing on our salvation. i don't think it's judgmental at all.

as Christians, we are called to a kingdom that is higher than anything that this earth has to offer. why put any stock in matierial things when, in the Heavenly Jerusalem, gold is so worthless it lines the streets?

I think I have some of you beat. Awhile back, I didn't watch or own a TV for almost 5 years and additionally, I've never seen hugely popular movies like Star Wars, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, or any Rambo or Terminator movies. Participation in the popular entertainment culture is so customarily expected, on the rare occassions when I've told people I've never seen those movies, they seem to think I must be lying. A girlfriend once told me I ought to be a hermit, that was before I learned from Orthodoxy that there still are such things as hermits. Hmmm...

I'm usually not up on most of the new and most popular movies either. Usually because they're the usual "shoot 'em up," "jump in the sack quickly" type movies, that I don't care to watch.

<--- Blushing because even though I am married, a devoted Orthodox Christian and a mother, I still enjoy dying my hair, wearing high heals, buying "trendy" clothing and pampering myself. I do not believe engaging in these things is wrong or evil or ungodly. It is a personal matter between oneself and God.

I, too, find it very sad to meet those who worship this world or who worship anything before the Almighty God.
