Hi everyone. Seeing as how some (not all) heavy metal music is unChristian and even has anti-Christian lyrics, is it a sin for a Christian to listen to heavy metal music? Just thought I'd explore this with you all. :)

i listen to alot of secular hard rock and some metal. There are quite a few anti-religious songs and groups, but many also respect religion. I think its sinful in the context that lyrics may be straight-up disrespecting God and we give our approval by listening to it. So I just approach the issue song by song.

The OP asks: "Is it a sin for a Christian to listen to Heavy Metal music?"

ha ha ha.

I could see a person walking through a store, which has this Music playing.
Then, God sneers down, and delcares that every Customer has just sinned.

I chuckle at the "loose" logic of the OP: "Seeing as how some heavy metal music as unChristian and ... is it a sin for a Christian to listen to [ANY] heavy metal music?"

So,
1) Some songs are (in the OP's imagination) un-Christian;
2) therefore, ALL music should be sin-ful.

Give me a break.
Please, OP, list some of these so-called un-Christian songs.

Stereotyping at its worst (and lowest).
I ask the OP, is this ALSO True (in your warped perspective)? ... Some Muslims are terrorists, therefore, ALL Muslims are EVIL.

Ummm, I never said that. It was a question to explore. In fact, I do not believe what you assumed me to believe. I prefer to take it on a song by song basis. Other people do not. It is those people who I am wanting to debate with. Oh and try not assume anymore. You know what they say about assuming. ;) Oh and do not put words in my mouth like you did by adding "any" to my words.

Well, OP, I noticed that you quoted me, but refused to answer my questions.

You make a claim: "I prefer to take it on a song by song basis." ... but you do NOT even mention ONE song that you would consider un-Christian (whatever that even means).

Come on, OP, this is YOUR Thread.
If you REALLY think some of this music is un-Christian, then please clarify yourself.
If NOT, then I will assume that you have nothing real to say ... and maybe many others will assume the same.

I'll be honest, I am not that familiar with heavy metal music and therefore, cannot name a song that is unChristian. However, I'd be willing to bet that one or two songs from the likes of Marilyn Manson would qualify.

OK, OP, now that you have admitted to starting this Thread with NO knowledge of what you were talking about, I would like to go-over your put-downs of me in your response (Post # 4).

You claim: "In fact, I do not believe what you assumed me to believe."
What do I assume that you believe?
I don't think I said much.
So, unless you were flaming me, please explain yourself.

And, the OP claimed to take offense: "Oh and do not put words in my mouth like you did by adding "any" to my words."
I can't understand what you are putting me down about.
Please explain how my adding "any" (in Brackets) actually put words into your Mouth.

I think YOU are the one who is assuming too much from what I am am saying ... NOT the other way around.

So, explain yourself, and we will see who is doing the assuming.

I wouldn't say it's a sin, no. But as you say, some heavy metal music (and music in other genres too) can be rather explicitly anti-Christian, and personally I wouldn't touch some of it with a barge pole (Marilyn Manson, the Rolling Stones, Cradle of Filth, HIM, to name just a few). But really, I'd say it depends on where you are in your walk with God.

God bless,

David.

In short...no.

The real Sin is anything you try to do, in an effort to attain right standing with God...ironic isnt it.

Why do you say that? I could be wrong, but I think everyone here would agree that trying to attain right standing with God is highly commendable, however much we may all fall short of the ideal.

David.

Hey SolidlyHere, how about addressing the issue instead of attacking the OP? She brought up an issue for discussion without necessarily knowing all the subtleties of that topic; is that really such an issue?

It's obvious you have some strong opinions on the matter. Don't weaponize them.

Personally, I don't think any genre of music is sinful; it's the content of the lyrics and the response created within the person that can be evil. That said, I don't think any music is inherently evil at all; it all depends upon our response.

I don't believe it is a "sin" to listen to any particular genre of music, or even any particular song. However, I do believe it unwise to listen to music, read books, etc. that encourages destructive behavior. I believe it becomes sinful if a person listens to, reads, views, etc. materials with content that is going to lead him into making destructive choices. For example, I don't generally find that music lyrics impact my behavior. On the other, sexually provocative television can cause lust issues. So, watching TV shows/movies that might be harmless for some would be sinful for me and listening to music that might be destructive for some Christians would be okay for me. That being said, not out of morality, but as a matter of wisdom, I try to avoid music with messages that strongly conflicts with Christian spirituality or morality.

I'd say no its not a sin to listen to any kind of music.

The question in my mind is what is in ones heart that draws them to that music. About 1973 I started listening to acid rock. I remmember thinking one day, this music is really lonely. I'm not lonely, I don't want to be lonely and so I really don't like and can't relate to this music.

Now a lot of clasic rock I like and listen to to this day. From my experiance we can use the music we are drawn to listen to as a way to konw ourselves and then know another way to grow. If Christ is the center of our life than God will be glad to use thos messages to grow us up.

No. I listen to a lot of heavy metal, mostly the "older" guys though. People like Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Judas Priest, Metallica, etc. To me the music of the above groups mostly tell stories through music, it's not a confession or autobiography of the person writing the song or performing the song. It's a song. I think the key here is what we do with what we hear. If the music is making you a negative person, causing you to focus more on the thematic elements of the song rather than on Christ, you have a problem. If you can appreciate the music for what it was and not take it too seriously I think you're fine. Alot of people are surprised when they find out certain musicians are Christians, which always amazes me. I think they're shocked because they're taking the music to mean something more than it does. Like it's a recorded diary of that band's interests and activities.

I'll help you out here. Christians have always hated "The Number of the Beast" by Iron Maiden. You can Google the lyrics and see for yourself what all the hoopla was about. That one song and album still get mentioned by evangelicals as being the music listened to during Satanic rituals. LOL

There is entirely too much agreement on this thread. So, I am going to change my position . . . . Not only is heavy metal music evil . . . . All music is evil, except of course good old hymns. And even here you have to be careful. If a song contains any instrument other than pipe organ, it is evil. If its tempo exceeds 50 bpm, it is evil. If it doesn't contain a clear biblical theological teaching, by that I mean, if it does not clearly and obviously reinforce one of the fundamentals of the faith, it is evil. All of that being said, it is probably better not to listen to music at all, because it might just cause you to go to hell. Come to think of it, even using the word "music" is probably evil.

In, sum, of course heavy metal music is evil. It was brought to us by Satan to corrupt the weak and turn them from the Lord. If you listen to Heavy Metal, or any other type of music for that matter, there is hope. You can repent now, and promise to never ever ever listen to music again, and be saved. Amen.

Hey man, no reason to be so harsh on her. She asked a simple question.
The reason why I came into this thread was to see what other people thought about this topic, not to watch somebody get bashed in her own thread!

In response to the thread:
There are actually christian heavy-metal bands out there, Paladin. Some names include Tsao, Norma Jean, and I've even heard that Demon Hunter is a christian band.
So, I can't say that it is a sin, especially seeing as how God says in the Bible that He wants us to worship him loudly. :)

Hope I helped you out.

David.
Why would you try to do something you know you never will be able to do? When I hear of a person trying to attain right standing with God by what they do, they are engaged in works-righteous salvation.
