The reason I would never make it more than three days in Aussie is because there is no way I could fake liking vegemite, nor could I live without Cheez-Its.
But we have Cheezels.

And Cheetos (cheese and bacon balls.)

And Cheese Twisties.

And we don't expect immigrants to like vegemite... just to let us eat it in peace.

Perth, Western Australia is I believe, the most isolated city in the world. It's got about 2 million people, it's clean and very pretty. I love it here. You must remember that the TOTAL POPULATION of Australia is about 21 million.....I believe some cities in America have that population. Oh and don't forget, we drive on the LEFT side of the road here. We don't have the death penalty, life in prison usually means about 20 years, though a few get....never to be released. The free health system is fantastic and available to all. There are lots of public holidays each year, about 7 I think and most employees get 4 weeks annual holidays which they're paid for with an extra loading on top of the ordinary wage. The east coast is more populated than anywhere. There's basically no one living in the middle of the country. We have lots of American shows on tv...not that I bother with tv much. Hey what can I say....I'm a very, very proud Australian.....come and enjoy REAL freedom.

How are the income taxes? I pay about 28% by the time I'm done. That's taxes, capital gains, social security, and everything thing else the government can soak me for.
Then there is property taxes. That's another $3,000 per year (U.S) for a $300,000 house.

Australia has one of the highest personal tax rates in the world (or so I've been told.) But we have socialised everything - part of our national character involves giving every a "fair go". Some internationals find this confronting... but I don't think most Aussies think twice about it.

The Australian Tax Office says:

Individual income tax rates
Residents

These rates apply to individuals who:
  • are residents of Australia for tax purposes for the whole financial year (see Residency - overview for more information), and
  • did not leave full-time education for the first time during the financial year.
Tax rates 2006-07

Taxable income
Tax on this income
$0 – $6,000 Nil
$6,001 – $25,000 15c for each $1 over $6,000
$25,001 – $75,000 $2,850 plus 30c for each $1 over $25,000
$75,001 – $150,000 $17,850 plus 40c for each $1 over $75,000
$150,001 and over $47,850 plus 45c for each $1 over $150,000

Tax rates 2007-08

Taxable income
Tax on this income
$1 – $6,000 Nil
$6,001 – $30,000 15c for each $1 over $6,000
$30,001 – $75,000 $3,600 plus 30c for each $1 over $30,000
$75,001 – $150,000 $17,100 plus 40c for each $1 over $75,000
$150,001 and over $47,100 plus 45c for each $1 over $150,000

The above rates do notinclude the Medicare levy of 1.5% (read What is the Medicare levy? for more information).
Tax offsets reduce the tax payable. Tax offsets based on taxable income levels apply to a range of circumstances. For more information read About tax offsets.
Non-residents

If you are a non-resident for the full year, the following rates apply:
Tax rates 2006-07

Taxable income
Tax on this income
$0 – $25,000 29c for each $1
$25,001 – $75,000 $7,250 plus 30c for each $1 over $25,000
$75,001 – $150,000 $22,250 plus 40c for each $1 over $75,000
$150,001 and over $52,250 plus 45c for each $1 over $150,000

Tax rates 2007-08

Taxable income
Tax on this income
$0 – $30,000 29c for each $1
$30,001 – $75,000 $8,700 plus 30c for each $1 over $30,000

Non-residents are not required to pay the Medicare levy.

Ok...lets promote SA hehe! Despite what the other states say, we are very friendly and clean...its a beautiful and laid back city which is truly sometimes like a big country town. We have a really good fringe festival which consists of a myriad of arts, theatre, film, comedy, etc...The population is just over one million and isn't as hustle and bustle and busy as many of the east coast cities. There is a thread around here somewhere with a thread to the SA site...

Ah yanks... got to luv them...

Mate, Australia is the best bloody country in the world mate - take it from a wog who spent 20 years elsewhere.

Aussies generally do not care - about anything that has anything to do with anything other than about 5-6 shapes of (foot or hand)balls (AFL, Union, League, Soccer, Cricket....) or if not about this - learn two words - FORD IS BLUE and HOLDEN IS RED.

Seriously, Aussies r prob d most laid back bunch Ive ever had pleasure to meet - if they are not taking the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] out of ya it is coz you do not understant that they are taking the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] out of ya - dont get me wrong - not you because it is you.. Aussies take [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] out of everyone, the most out of themselves (and even more Kiwis - bloody handbag carrrying skirts ^_^)...

Freedoms and democracy and all the other things the yanks carry on about are something we pay politicians to argue about and pay each other out - firstly its bloody hilarious and secondly whos got time for that - cricket is on.

Jobs - plenty mate - only people in Oz who do not work are bastards who do not want to work and students (which is like very same like the former group) - take it from me - I worked and got paid $12 per hour in 1995 and could not say my name in English - I did not know how to say MY NAME IS... it is even easier if u got some school and wanna work - if not, well you can always become a politician :)

As Helen said we have a parliament - who bloody cares?!
We have judges and police - and you can buy both if you got money ^_^.

Final note, I am not sure but if I had to move to Australia again and go through Australianisation again - I wud - bloody worth it.
