I have been brain storming the idea of moving there sometime in the future from the USA. I just keep hearing and reading things that portray it as such a more conservative and Christian environment than in the USA. I am growing very weiry of the stupid socialistic environment and evil environment of the scene here in the USA.

I have a couple questions though.

What is it's political environment like?

What carrier oppertunities are big there in the management and tech fields?

Are there Eastern Catholic Churches there?

How hard is it to move there and start a new life from the USA?

What is the cost of living like and can one live comfortablely without being part of the dirty business or political world?

What are the freedom levels like?

How are immigrants accepted there?

What is it's political environment like?

We use the Westminister system of government - a bicameral system, with the judiciary, the government and the executive.

There are two main parties - Labor (slightly more left) and the Liberal/National Coalition (slightly more right) but both pretty central, plus the Greens, the Democrats and Independents. In the Upper House there are those 6 parties, plus lots of special interest parties who run but never seem to get elected.

Unlike America, the Federal Government is much more important than the State governments, who are in tunr more important than the Local governments.

WE DO NOT VOTE FOR JUDGES, OR POLICE, OR PROSECUTORS. (And there's no plea bargaining either, fyi)

What carrier oppertunities are big there in the management and tech fields?

??? Not sure what the question means. But there are plenty of big companies and plenty of R and D happening...

Are there Eastern Catholic Churches there?

Yes. But it does depend on where you live as to how far you have to drive (But based on your previous question I
m guessing you won't be moving to Woop Woop)

How hard is it to move there and start a new life from the USA?

Um... never tried it myself... but assuming you get your visas and everything sorted the actual move should be fairly easy. We are similar enough that you'll be able to find your way around without too much trouble.

The biggest problem all Americans have is that they are... well.... American. Land of the free, home of the brave, we're the greatest country in the world sort of thing. Australian's are laid back, easygoing types fro the most part, but we do love to take tall poppies down a peg or two. And I'm sorry to say it, but you guys are really easy targets. I've no idea what it is exactly, but you poor things are (generally) so uninformed about the rest of the world. It's frightening. And you don't understand our sense of humour, which makes taking the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] even easier.

In all seriousness, if you're willing to learn about our culture, I'm sure you'll do fine.

Butyou'd better bring your own sugar. We don't put sugar in our food like you do.

And you better brace yourself for minimum wages.

And universal healthcare (though I think you need to be at least a permanent resident to qualify for this)

And a REAL social security system.

What is the cost of living like and can one live comfortablely without being part of the dirty business or political world?

Definitely yes. 'Course it depends on your definition of comfortable.

What are the freedom levels like?

Ummm... what do you mean?

Let's get a biggie out of the way first:

NO GUNS!!!! DON"T BRING THEM WITH YOU. DON'T EXPECT TO CARRY ONE. DON'T EXPECT TO EVEN OWN ONE WITHOUT A GUN LICENCE, A LOCKABLE GUN SAFE AND A MEMBERSHIP TO YOUR LOCAL PISTOL CLUB, WHICH IS THE ONLY PLACE YOU'D BE ABLE TO USE IT. IF IT HAS THE WORD "AUTOMATIC" ANYWHERE IN THE NAME, JUST GIVE UP NOW.

Our government has more of sense of humour than yours.

ASIO is MUCH less paranoid than the CIA.

What else do you want to know?

How are immigrants accepted there?

Generally very well. Particularly once they realise they've moved to the best country in the world (except maybe for New Zealand - low be it spoken.)

The vast majority of Americans are uninformed about their own country, you don't really expect them to know anything about anybody else's country do you? They know all about pop culture, and usually the latest sports, but very little about what's going on in the world.....of course, yours truly is an exception to that rule. ;)

Yeah, what she said lol! Oh and the screams of my sister (which can be heard across the nation) when she just spotted a red back just then...or any spider for that matter, esp daddy long-legs haha! With health for instance, and I may be wrong here...if you need chemo or the like, you will not be forking out money paying it off till you go broke...you will be cared for. And yeah, Eastern Catholic churches are not the most common ones. In Adelaide, where I live, there are two Ukrainian Catholic churches (not near by either) and I think one other...not sure...but yeah, if you have any other questions, fire away

Great writeup helenofbritain. If I change a few words it would work equally well for Americans looking at my native Canada - I'm in Florida now.

Yes, to any and all Americans thinking of moving to another country, study up on it a bit. No one expects you to be an expert, but when an American co-worker in Louisville asked me if Canada had been in WWII, "Yes, for over two years before you guys.", you know there are problems :)

Don't want to ruin your dreams stivvy, but a land of national healthcare and good social security etc like Australia doesn't exactly seem more conservative than the US - at least not to me.

I'd love to move to Australia, or, for the cooler climate, New Zealand. I'd love to live somewhere less crowded and less polluted than here. But there aren't that many jobs for Dutch teachers I'm afraid (I mean teachers of Dutch, which I'm going to be soon).

I could use a tutor. Though I'd have to pay in you in chips. I've got an awful lot of chips, though...

What, you already have a tutor for free! You don't need me! And who said I wanted to move to the US? :p (Although I wouldn't mind all the space and the beautiful landscapes - but I really don't want to give up national healthcare etc.)

microchips or potato chips?

Thankyou.

I KNOW! Same with the Lusitania in WWI.

Or Vietnam (Australia was there).

Or a whole lot of other stuff...

Scary true story here... The is a satirical show here called "The Chaser's War on Everything" and they have a US reporter who does vox pops with unsuspecting Americans. One day he asked a series of questions about 9/11 and we saw about 15 different people answer these questions:

When Was 9/11?
October????
August???
30th September
Ummm, mid August?
Was that in November?
etc....

How many people died in 9/11?
OH it was heaps, like 3 million.
1 million
100 000
60 000
300 000

No one got close.

Who was responsible for 9/11?
Saddam Hussein (x10)
I-rak (Iraq)
Pakistan
The CIA

What got attacked on 9/11?
New York/ Twin Towers.
No one said the Pentagon...

Now I know they would have edited out the correct answers, because they wouldn't be funny, but are we seeing a problem here???

Why don't your schools teach world history? There's so much interesting stuff to KNOW!

I feel so ashamed for not mentioning those...strip me of my Aussiness :p Thing is tho, in Canberra, kangaroos are jumping around everywhere in the city. But not to ruin the story, but never had a shrimp on a barbie haha but you just gave me an idea...I think I might go and get me some toast and vegemite!

We're happy little vegemites, as happy as can be...we all enjoy our vegemite for breakfast, luch and tea...:p

Our mummy says we're growing stronger every single week... because we love our vegemite! we all adore our vegemite! It puts a rose in every cheek!

About the Citizenship test.... that one redneck was just AWFUL, wasn't he! Shame...

Do you remember the Ice Dream from the Salt Lake City winter Olympics? Getting the yanks to do the weather but putting the capital cities in the wrong spots? No one blinked!
