I think it's absolutely stupid that the guys from the show Chaser's War On Everything could face 6 months in jail for their APEC prank. Crikey, haven't some people got a sense of humour?

This is a complete waste of the taxpayer's money. They're just harmless, politically incorrent larrikins like myself.

and what law if I may ask? They had a permit for TV filming. This would be embarresment number 2 for the State, absolutly reticulies to send them to jail, they were working for a Government organisation: ABC
BTW don't forget to watch this Wednesday the ABC Chasers - it should be great fun.

6 months is the maximum they can receive for breaking the laws they did, it doesn't mean that anyone in the courts would actually give them 6 months for their actions. I think it is rather stupid for the police to prosecute them though considering they guided them in, they didn't hide the police just assumed they were official (if any had followed any decent procedure and actually checked they would have seen the multiple joke identifications, costumes etc.). If it was a restricted area they should have been restricted from it.

Its made a farce of the security.

there were special laws sighted for during APEC, and that included unauthorised entry into the security zone.

which is where they were, they had no permit to actually enter the security zone. the fact they were trying to say they didn't know they were in it, and thought they'd just reached it when they turned around points to them not having that permission.

if they can prove they really didn't know they were in the security zone, then that's pretty well the only thing that will get them off.

These guys need to to realise that there is such a thing as going too far. Sure the security wasn't up to scratch, but that being said, just because they were able to get past security, doesn't mean they should have done so. They had the choice to stop at any point on their little escapade.

Like the laws or not, they were in place, and the Chaser guys broke them. They should be treated no differently then if it was a bunch of protesters that somehow got through security.

And I don't see how the fact they work for a Government organisation has anything to do with it.

While there is no doubt that a number of people involved with the security should get a good hard kick in the bottom, none of the security failings change the fact that the Chaser guys went willingly into what they surely must have known was a restricted area. They may have been waved through, but no-one put a gun to their head and forced them through. Whatever the security failings, they had the free choice to stop at any point during their stunt and turn around, but they kept going and ended up where they did through their own free will.

The justification that I keep hearing the no-one stopped them and that they were waved through is rubbish. Grown, functional members of a civilised society shouldn't need someone to constantly ensure they are following the rules-it is first and foremost up to the individual, in this case the Chaser guys. I think it is time they started taking some responsibilities for their own actions rather then trying to blame everyone else.

i agree with you.

if a people who were protesting had done the same thing and had gotten that far in, then they would be facing jail as well.

you can't let the chasers off JUST because they "are known for this type of stuff" ... it needs to be consistent throughout everything.

It's only 6 months anyway - its not like its a heaps long time in jail anyway.

For goodness sake...let's concentrate on locking up the real criminals (child molesters, rapists, murderers etc) and not waste money and time on locking up the Chasers! Do you know how much money it costs to charge, try and subsequently jail someone in Australia?? It's well into the thousands $$ !

1. The prank was funny.
2. They took it too far.
3. Miscommunication by the surrounding police.
4. They moved too far into the hazard zone (which they reportedly didn't know).

5. Well... lets just say jail is ALOT better than the alternative result. They could have been shot by surrounding snipers.

The jail term is lenient enough. I tend to agree with the issue of them breaking the law. Some may think it's funny, but when you dress up as a terrorist, walk within proximity of the world leaders when the surrounding security are already on the edge against danger, I don't think its surprising what will happen. I'm just glad nobody shot a round that day.

Seems to me that neither the police nor government will really want to take this to court and have their failures held up for the world to see all over again. Not to mention the field-day it will give to free-speech campaigners to make their case.

Someone, somewhere will find a way quitely tell them off and let it all go away without a trial.

I still think the guys did the country ...if I dare say the world...a favour, by pointing out what shocking flaws there were in so called...strictest security...for world leaders....!!! I hope all of those world leaders take home a lesson from this, as well as Australia, and make sure it never happens again. The guys didn't pretend to be anything other than what they were....all passes etc had written on them....JOKE....and the authorities didn't bother to check...shame, shame, shame on the authorities....it's thanks to these pranksters that no one was hurt.......it was risky sure....but the authorities let it happen......

I know they technically didn't break the law but they did test the limits... would everyone here support me if i decided to go to one of the Thai police officers and said "I might have a bomb on me" and if they shot me dead on the spot who would be in the wrong? me cause i said that i MIGHT have it or would they be for for not checking it out first?

I think these guys are immature and show a total lack of respect to any authority

They got in under false pretenses. If they had of driven up to the checkpoint, introduced themselves to the police as the Chaser guys and asked permission to head into a restricted zone to pull a prank AND had still been waved through, then you may have a point, but as it was, they pretended to be someone they weren't to gain access. Yes the police shouldn't have been fooled so easily, but the Chaser guys shouldn't have been trying either.

As for not harming anyone, but that logic, we should ignore a lot of crimes. Would you feel the same if you found someone in your backyard - not harming you, not spying, just sitting there? I'm sure you would want police action then, even if the guy wasn't harming anyone. They broke the law, everything else is largely irrelevant in the question of their guilt.

yeah i know that is their job but i might be tough on them cos i think they are idiots for all the stunts they do... kinda reminds me of pranks i would do in school or bets i would do at school.... "5 bucks says you cant skip school without being noticed"
