Hi everyone!

I've been collecting beads for quite a while and now I'm learning to make simple items of jewelry. I'm hoping to move into making more fancy items soon. I enjoy it, but I like doing lots of different activities, so my time spent beading is just as scattered as my time spent on each of the other activities.

Have any of you made a bead decoration for bottles? I think they are especially pretty, particularly on a unique perfume bottle that is already quite pretty itself. I haven't gotten good enough with the beads to try those yet.

:)

I have been in Jewelry making for over a year now at least. I like making necklaces, and bracelets. I don't much care for making earrings, but I can. I love working with Swarovski crystals. Oh yes, Hello. I have made several bracelets that my medical alert charm can go onto.

Hello to all and thanks for this interesting thread.

I am very new to beading, we're talking just a couple of weeks. I've always loved beaded jewelry, but have just started learning to make some myself.

While we were recently on vacation, I visited a bead store. They had tons of beads for sale, but you could also sit at a project table and they would help you make a piece for a small fee.

I was there for a week and visited the store a few times. I found it very relaxing and loved working on combining colors and shapes.

I made 6 bracelets and a necklace, AND my (19 year-old) son and husband made bracelets too! My husband made one for me and my son's was for himself.

Interestingly, my son arranged his beads (some of which don't even look like beads) very randomly and it came out great. And it fits very well with the bracelets so many teens wear these days. He's not at all into crafts, but said this was the first time he enjoyed doing any kind of craft.

Mine are a mix. My first ones are planned and matching all the way around as far as a pattern goes. Then, inspired by my son's random one, I made 2 that are random in design.

I would love any advice on websites or any other type of advice you'd like to share. The lady at the store shared about a couple websites she thought were good sources. Would also love to know if any have been not worth buying from...perhaps you could pm me with that, don't know if that's something we're not supposed to post in threads.

At some point I hope to share pictures of what I've made and would also love to see what you all have made.

Thanks again for an interesting thread....I'm so excited to meet others who are into beads.

Hi, :)

My two favorite websites to use are:

http://www.firemountaingems.com
http://www.bluemud.com

I use the second one to order sterling silver findings. The first one I use for pretty much everything else.

I've found that bead stores that are in the community mark the price up significantly from what you can buy the same product for on the internet. Quadrupling the cost isn't unheard of. For this reason I buy as much as I can on the internet.

For the most part, the only reason that I go to beadstores these days is if I need something immediately, or if I'm looking for inspiration or a class to take.

Happy beading. :)

Thanks so very much for all the wonderful advice. I'm going to be sure to check out both of those sites.

I hope to keep learning more bit by bit.

Do you sell your things?

You're welcome. :)

I'm pretty busy, and don't have time to sell my jewelry. My mom asked me if she could try to sell a few pieces for me last year, and did okay selling it to family and friends.

Maybe in the future I'll try selling jewelry more seriously, but right now I just don't have time for it...

Tickled to find this thread.

I've recently started beading as a hobby. I haven't had a real "craft" hobby in many, many years, but part of anxiety recovery is taking up a hobby and finding a relaxing "me time". My mom has been into beads for a couple years now, and got my Grandma into it, and since she had given me some beads, I decided to give it a go.

I've made around 10 necklaces, some with complimentary bracelets &/or anklets, and recently started making earrings.

The jury is still out as to whether it is helping my anxiety though, I find working with the beads relaxing, but putting on the fittings is a little stressful... lol. I'm getting better with practice though, so maybe there is hope. ;)

I'm thinking it's not a very cheap hobby though unless you find some good sales. LOL :D .

Hey, I do a little beading -- nothing fancy, just simple earrings, bracelets, anklets, and the occasional necklace. I really enjoy putting together combinations of beautiful beads, experimenting with color combos and such. I tend to give them as presents sometimes.

I'd love to learn more advanced techniques. Anyone know of a website that might give me some ideas/instructions?

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions, but I do like to visit other bead sites and get ideas- that might be something that would help?

There is also a tips page here- http://www.beadiefriends.com/BeadingInstructions.htm - but it depends on what sort of techniques you are looking to get into.

Not sure about websites, but here's a fun one.

Try incorporating come organza ribbon into your work. You can buy the organza ribbon at most craft stores or beading suppliers in a variety of colors. You will also need a small block of bees wax available from jewelry craft suppliers.

Cut the ribbon to length leaving yourself some extra to work with. Cut the ends at a 45 degree angle or steeper, resulting in a end that tapers to a point.

Press and gently rub the tapered end on the bees wax block, getting just enough on there to allow you to roll the organza between your fingers into a fine, needle-like point. You can then thread the organza through a bead. You must use beads that have average sized holes in them. Tiny holes wont accept the ribbon. Too much wax on the ribbon may also cause threading problems. You may need to re-apply was on occasion or even trim the edge of the ribbon.

Beads can be spaced on the organza at any spacing intervals you want and stay in place on their own. The beads may move slightly but are easily repositioned. No knotting is necessary.

To place a clasp, slide a smooth crimp (tube) bead onto the end of the organza, followed by the clasp. Now pay attention, here. Fold the pointed end of the organza over the clasp and against the flat part of the ribbon. then fold or roll the flat part of the ribbon over the pointed end. This will cover or envelop the pointed end and allow you to slide the crimp up the ribbon and over the part that contains the pointed end. In other words, it allows you to easily pull the ribbon back through the crimp. Once you can see the end is though the crimp, you can grab it and pull it through as far as you wish. Sounds complicated, but its really simple and easy.

Once you ave gotten it where you want it, squeeze the crimp tight on the ribbon and do the other end of the piece the same way.
