Hi there,
If you would be convinced (by evidence) that there is no soul how would your world-view change ?

I don't want to talk about the evidence here, just how would it affect you if it was convincing.

Cheers,
Richard

P.S. By soul I am referring to "the immaterial part of a person" which survives death.

I guess it depends what you’re referring to when you speak of soul ………..
Biblically the soul is what makes you, you…….. it’s your breath life.
Animals, Christians, and yes even atheist all have soul.
So if you have evidence there is no soul, you wouldn’t care……….. cuz you wouldn’t be alive to care.

Can't be convinced, so can't even go there.

I've always veiwed the soul to be the flesh and the spirit to be the immortal part that we inherit being created in His image (no debate is sought as I very well could be incorrect on this interpretation).

There are two glasses--one full and one empty. Why would you look at the empty glass for evidence rather than the full glass?

In otherwords, what about the evidence that we do have a spirit? Even athiests agree that there is a place inside of all man that drives him...most have to admit it stems beyond the cognitive abilities. After all we create things. Things that we have no fore knowledge about -- things we just invision.

So how do we invision what is not in existence yet? How do we see beyond that of which we know or already exists?

How or why would a person want to look at an empty glass and suppose this as evidence that the glass is empty. In truth there is all sorts of molecules existing in a glass that 'appears' empty. There is possibly even microorganisms inside the glass that the human eye can not see without the right scientific equipment.

There was a time when the world was thought to be flat and microorganisms living about us was not known. Could the evidence that you feel you might have acquired be inaccurate due to the lack of knowledge and seeking an empty glass versus the truth.

I see many glasses on a table or paths in life. I have found the Bible to be accurate and the path that is accurate in life. All the other glasses with thier own substances seem empty to me. My Spirit lives beyond the breath I take.

Welcome to forums and I hope you receive much from your membership here. :)

Thank you for the welcome.
In case there is still a misunderstanding by soul I am referring to the "immortal" part of being.

I am puzzled by the replies so far. I start a question with "What if...." and the only answer I get is "It can't happen.....". Doesn't that bother you, that you dismiss a question so easily? To me it seems there is no point in debating when this is the answer to a simple question.

I know how my world-view would change if I found evidence for a soul, or god convincing. I'm just asking you, how would your world-view change if you found convincing evidence against a soul?

I hope some of you will give a simple answer to my simple question.

Cheers,

Ok
Simple answer
I am having such a great time awaiting Christ return …that if I found out there is no return {immortality} nothing would change ………………..

Now that I answered your question ……………..how would things change for you, if you truly found out there was immortality??

In order to convince me you would have to make very substantial changes to my world view first. Those changes would have a bigger impact that any comments about souls.

But just to clarify, the Christian belief isn't 'our body will die and our soul will live on' but 'our body will be resurrected'.

Hello,

I think that would lead me to examine what the Bible means when it talks about a soul, and if this is truly the soul which the evidence has shown does not exist, and lastly if these two things DID matche, then I would discount the evidence.

The problem you have with arguments like this, is that they will never overthrow experience. When you have experienced God, no amount of evidence will sway you otherwise, because you truly believe that your time on this planet is fleeting at best, when compared to eternity, and that placing anything before God and God's Word (the Bible) is straying from the truth.

In addition, evidence is based off of what? Science? A man-made system of determining truth, whereas Christians believe that God is the truth and to place anything higher than God, is to worship an idol. It doesn't need to be a carved figure of stone. Not sure if this is the sort of answer you wanted, but I feel it's truthful.

Cheers!

Actually, that's a great question, if science suddenly proved to you that God existed, what would you do?

Thanks for the answers, they are very informative for me.

I don't know how to quote, yet, so here is my answer to:
"Now that I answered your question ……………..how would things change for you, if you truly found out there was immortality??"

If there was immortality: I wouldn't be afraid of death, probably I would welcome it, as I'll trancend to a better world. I would value human life much less, as each death brings the person who died to the eternal fate that awaits him/her. I would try to find out which religion got it right, unless when "I truly found there was immortality" I also found the "One True Religion", or maybe I'll need to form my own religion based on the evidence that convinced me.

I would win a million dollars from the JREF because I could present proof of a supernatural claim. But what's the point in getting money if you have an eternal soul?

This gave me an idea.
If you don't believe in a soul please tell us, how your world-view would change if you found proof for a soul.
If you do believe in a soul please tell us, how your world-view would change if you found proof agains a soul.

Cheers,
Richard

Ok.. lets say for the sake of a discussion... that "Poof" there is some evidence that there is no "After Life" there is no "Soul" and that this is the have all.. end all.. of your existence....

How would my life view change.... well.. that is a tough question.. because in the end of things... I really have no clue how my life view would change.. sure I could speculate.. and make some form of assumption based on what I would "Like" for me to do.. but in the end.. I really have no idea...

That is like saying "What would you do if your child was born with no arms" well.. sure.. we can say lots of things of what our superego would like for us to do.. or what we think we might do.. but in the end.. we really don't know.. we can only take a guess...

in this case.. all I can think of is.. what I was like.. before God entered my life... and I guess I would go back to that way of life again.. just in a more mature manner I would wager...

One thing would be funny however.. I would get to tell all the Atheist.. "Well your right... when you die.. that's it.. your dead, game over, end of the life.. now don't you feel dumb for wasting the limited moments of this finite life you have trying to disprove God when you should have been out enjoying yourself with all that life has to offer"

In an odd way.. I guess.. I would become much more spiteful.. possibly..

Hope this helps you.

God Bless

Immortality proves the existence of the God of the Bible. That proof will not be realized until our bodily resurrection. When our body dies, everything that made us us dies. When our body is resurrected is when we will have received immortalty.

Therefore, it should not be comforting for unbelievers to dwell easily on the subject of immortality.

My conviction that there is a God and that He loves and cares for us all is the only thing that keeps me going . If I KNEW that no god existed my life would loose all meaning and I would go ahead and commit suicide. God is the only one that makes me a human being and without Him everything would be meaningless.

Historically Christians never believed the soul was separate from the spirit.
Your question is likened to that of the astronaut who couldn't go to space unless he knew there was a God and life after death. There is actually an old movie based on this sort of reasoning. If you can find it, it's titled "The Ninth Configuration". It has a metaphysical aspect.

God did not create us to be alone.

evidence for or against the soul is unsearchable, as is the ends of the universe:

Ecc 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in His time; also He has set eternity in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God makes from the beginning to the end.
