That is exactly right GLGA! I used to attend a church where the pastor had a jezebel spirit.

Now, I'm not exactly sure if this is a "demon", per se. I think, rather that this is something in the flesh that was cultivated since someone's childhood.

Billy
I think it starts out being in the flesh and then the more the person gives into it the more a demon will be attracted to that person. That's why it's labled a Jezebel "spirit".

Literally the Jezebel spirit could be intepreted as the ghost of the dead Canaanite woman Jezebel. Revelation certainly doesn't say anything about a 'Jezebel spirit.' It does talk about 'that woman Jezebel' who called herself a prophetess and taught the people to fornicate and eat meat offered to idols. There is a parallel with her and OT Jezebel, who also supported idolatrous practices in Israel, and Canaanite idolatry was generally sexually perverted.

I suppose its possible that some intercessor got a revelation about a kind of spirit and some over-zealous teachers have started making up if-y teachings about it. It irks me to hear people talk about 'the Jezebel spirit,' especially if they are just copying what they hear other people say, and don't even know the initial source of the idea of there being a Jezebel spirit. There is enough stuff in the Bible to teach on. Why

That something is called the spirit of Jezebel doesn't mean its Jezebel's ghost.

John the baptist was said to have come in the spirit of Elijah, that doesn't mean that he was posessed by Elijah's ghost.

John tells us in his epistles that there is a spirit of antichrist which drives many antichrists (false teachers/prophets).

The bible clearly recongizes that people sometimes have a spirit, other than their personal spirit which drives them. For Elijah it was surely the Spirit of God which is many faceted.

Granted it is an assumption, but a reasonable one, that the woman referred to in revelation as Jezebel is so called because she was driven by the same spirit as the original Jezebel. I personally believe that the letters to the seven churches were written specificly because they are addressing issues which are archtypical in the church. They address problems which commonly recure. Thus I believe that Jezebel (along with everthing else) is addressed because it is a recurring, common problem.

However, you are correct that much of what is taught and written about "the jezebel spirit" is based on the inference and 'revelation' of certain teachers.

3 different issues...

First the 2 easy ones...

"Soul ties" are "modern psychology meets charismatic theology," and it not mentioned in scripture at all. It's basically trying to spiritualize bad relationships/bad relationship skills, so that one can just "pray a prayer" and "fix everything" rather than actually having to learn how to establish healthy boundaries in one's life.

A "Jezebel Spirit", while never mentioned in scripture per se, is used by many to describe a rebellious/controlling "spirit" within a person-- be that an attitude or an actual demonic spirit. It is (obviously) taken from Jezebel in scripture who dominated her weak husband, fought against the true prophets of God, and led the people into idol worship.

"Generational curses" are the more difficult of the three to discuss, since there are scriptures talking about the "sins of the fathers visited on the children to the 3rd and 4th generation." Scripture is also clear that the grace/mercy of God is visited to the 1000th generation, so it would definitely seem that God's grace is far greater in its impact (even on future generations) than any sin could ever be. Again, many try to spiritualize these things to make it so that one can "fix" everything by praying a "magical" prayer to "break the curse". In reality, it's about breaking patterns of sinful behavior. For example, most alcoholics are the children of alcoholics-- because they learned the behavior by living in a dysfunctional household. One has to allow the grace of God to bring change so that one doesn't continue in those destructive behaviors learned.

Some sanity on an insane topic. Good work. Reps.

Great post Simon. I think you nailed it. ( I highlighted a couple of important points)

Hi:wave:

Before I was a member of a pentecostal church I went on a trip to the seven churches of Asia minor to see them. According to what I heard there Jezebel was a literal person in Thyatira, there are inscriptions with her name on it in Thyatira from that time, she was a member of the cloth makers guild there, a wealthy woman, she advocated that the Christians should sacrifice to the ROman Emperor Domitian and worship him as a god to escape his persecution. I was also told that Jezebel was a girl's name at that time, literally Bel is exalted, Bel is still worshipped today e.g the Pagan festival of Beltane.

Then I joined a pentecostal church and they said it was all a spirit:scratch:

E.g

http://www.path-light.com/Rev06b.htm

We know less about Thyatira than about any other of the seven cities and are, therefore, seriously handicapped in trying to reconstruct the situation. The one thing we do know is that it was a great commercial center, specially of the dyeing industry and of the trade in woolen goods. It was from Thyatira that Lydia, the seller of purple, came (Ac 16:14). From inscriptions discovered we learn that it had an extraordinary number of trade guilds. These were associations for mutual profit and pleasure of people employed in certain trades. There were guilds of workers in wool, leather, linen and bronze, makers of outer garments, dyers, potters, bakers and slave-dealers.

Here, we think, was the problem of the Church in Thyatira. To refuse to join one of these guilds would be much the same as to refuse to join a trade union today. It would mean to give up all prospect of commercial existence. Why should a Christian not join one of these guilds? They held common meals. These would very often be held in a temple and even if not, they would begin and end with a formal sacrifice to the gods, and the meat eaten would be meat which had already been offered to idols. Further, it often happened that these communal meals were occasions of drunken revelry and slack morality. Was it possible for a Christian to be part of such occasions?

There is some disagreement among Bible scholars as to whether the immorality of Jezebel refers to sexual or spiritual immorality. "It may well be that the teaching of Jezebel was that the Christians did not need to be so exclusive in their worship of Jesus Christ and, above all, that there was no need for them to refuse to say, 'Caesar is Lord,' and to burn their pinch of incense. If the Christian Church as a whole had accepted that form of teaching, the inevitable consequence would have been that Christianity would have become nothing more than still another of those religions of which the Roman Empire was so full. The claim of Christianity is not that Jesus Christ is one of the Saviors nor even the chief of Saviors; but that he is the only Savior. ... It seems to us that in this case all the threads tie up and there is no necessity to make a choice between views. All the probability is that Jezebel was teaching that a Christian ought to accommodate himself to the world; in other words she was urging on the Church a spiritual infidelity which was bound to issue in physical fornication" (Barclay).

Hi

How is this 'Jezebel's Spirit' any different from the sinful nature e.g:

Galatian 5:

19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Also how can a CHristian be possessed by a spirit?

Thanks:wave:

A Christian can't be possesed by a spirit but can be tormented or oppressed (as in, the thing is operating from the outside, so to speak). I believe a discerning of spirits (ie revelation from God) is needed to tell if there is actually demonic involvement in a persons life or a situation, or if it's just carnality and a failure to fully turn your life over to the Lord.

Here's a question about generational curses:
On my mom's side, her dad was married, had a child and his wife died when my uncle was around 4 or 5. He remarried to my grandmother and they had more kids (my mom included).
On my dad's side, his dad was killed when he was almost 5, his mom remarried briefly, divorced and remarried, had more kids.
My mom died when I was 2 (by brother was 4), my dad remarried briefly and divorced, then married my stepmom, they had more kids.
I got pregnant out of wedlock, the dad left, and I married someone else (when my daughter was the same age I was when I got my stepmom). We have more kids.
So, is this a curse? Is it sheer coincidence? Or possibly did God put together people in marriages who would understand a) the effect that loss of a parent can have on a person and a family, and b) the challenges of a blended family, so that they would be able to help in the healing process and be understanding of the issues that accompany it?

I guess you could look at genetic disease, like someone inherits a tendency to heart disease because your ma or pa, had it, as a generational curse.
Heart disease is often due to bad eating habits which we can learn from our parents.

So my baby was born with four heart defects and that means that I taught him to eat wrong. He's only one.

Woah, where did that come from? JohnR7 said "heart disease is OFTEN due to..." He didn't say always. I'm sure he didn't mean to blame you for anything. :)

BTW, is that your son in your pic? Cuz he's adorable!!

I'm sorry people have blamed you. I don't understand that mentality...playing the blame game. Anyway, Cecil's adorable and anyone reading your posts knows you love him and would do anything for him. God bless!

Hi there:wave:

But any Jezebel Spirit ministers I have met talk about driving the Jezebel Spirit out of someone. They say the Spirit is inside making people act like that. But I wonder what is the difference between the 'Jezebel Spirit' and the fruits of the sin nature given in Galatians 5?

The fruits if the flesh, or sin nature, come out of our not following the Holy Ghost. It isn't that one is following after a spirit of divisions or lust or witchcraft or whatever, but that you are simply being rebellious, carnal, whatever you call it, and not turning your life over to the rule of (headship of) Christ. You are following yourself and your own self-interests, not God's interests.

From what I have read, the Jezebel thing is mainly about control, and it specifically is being lead by a particular spirit. As far as I know, (and I could be wrong) evil spirits are fallen angels. Just as there are different types of angels there are different types of demons. And just as angels are answerable to and do the will of God, demons work for the dark. So if a person has a weakness in the area of (for instance) pride, 'control demons' - or I guess you could say Jezebel spirits - will look to get control over you in that area and tempt you to follow them instead of God. I don't have enough experience to make this a definitive statement, but I think that many times when one person is accused of having a ________ spirit, they are "in the flesh". It takes real Holy Ghost discernment to say that one is being controoled or led by a ___________spirit. And His wisdom to know how to deal with that.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the difference isn't so much in the acts one does but in the reasons one does them that are the determining factor in whether it's Galatians 5 or an evil spirit.

Hi Friend:wave:

Thanks for your message. From what I gather the 'jezebel spirit' manifests itself in exactly the same way (dissesnion, control, witchcraft) as the fruits of the sin nature, so we need a 'jezebel spirit' teacher to show us the difference?

Perhaps the Jezebel spirit teaching is all made up and these things associated with it are the fruits of the sin nature?
