Should women teach?

(1 tim 2 NASB)

11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.

12

But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.

13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.

14

And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

15 But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

Im not sure. I know the bible says that a woman should not have authority over a man, but i dont think theres a problem with them teaching other women or even children.

I do watch Joyce Myres on TV and enjoy her teaching, but dont know how i would feel about a female priest or minister teaching me in my own church until i experienced it.

Joyce Meyers is a powerful teacher...so that logically means that women can teach men? That does not follow. Scripture is clear on the issue. Crustal clear. You have to explain away scripture in order for it to be alright for women to teach men.

This doesn't even begin to adress the OP's quote, which is scripture:

(1 tim 2 NASB)

11(V)A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.
12(W)But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.
13(X)For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
14And it was not Adam who was deceived, but (Y)the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in (Z)faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

Scripture also says this:

Matthew 7:22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

I for one would much prefer to follow scripture rather than follow man's supposed wisdom on an issue as important as who is to teach. Everyone has their roles in the kingdom and we should strive to fill those roles. I will not be one who is sent away from Christ despite miracles and prophecies in His name! I would urge all to follow the clear teaching of scripture on this matter.

A decent breakdown of the matter can be found here:
http://jimhamilton.wordpress.com/2006/09/02/may-women-teach-men-at-church/
Ending with:
Paul has said, “I do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man,” and he does not qualify this statement by saying that women can teach men if the senior pastor approves, or if they have the blessing of their husbands. Such an interpretation can only stand if the interpreter himself qualifies Paul’s command by importing foreign data into the context, thereby distorting what Paul said.

Scripture is clear on the matter and mentions it in more than one place. I don't care how good a teacher Joyce Meyers might be she has absolutely no place teaching men.

:amen:

People 'explain away scripture' FAR too often.

I've personally seen MANY-MANY women (Christian or not),

who just want to 'power-trip' men,

out of ANGER,

ALL THE TIME.

What they fail to realize,

is that it's at the expense of the TRUTH,

their MUEL-like stiff-necked STUBORNESS,

POLLUTES The Message.

All because

they want to 'show that man'.

Bah!!!

To such women, I say:

"BE SILENT!"

There is something about a female, God had to put Adam to sleep to make us. Interesting? If it takes a donkey to preach the word and heal this world , who cares? If you look at it clearly Apostle Paul said "I DO NOTpermit..." I don't see Jesus Christ anywhere. Yes, he was led by God, but he also had a lot opinons.

why do people start these threads? To make sure women know their place? c'mon.....get over yourselves....

Agreed we have been over this alot alot and alot more times I wish we could make it a sticky so many won't pop up but I guess like with any other subject we have to go over it to make sure the important thing out of this is that people understand it. I will I could go back to the last one I loved the way someone worded people write it's clear but honestly it is clear our thoughts are not Gods thoughts, the way we interept things isn't the same way he interpets them, sometimes it's the complete opposite and it will not return unto him void. I can't remember the way the person worded it but I do know women are allowed to teach and women are allowed to preach my co-pastor is a woman and rememnber God is no respect of a person. So with that being said wouldn't that go against each other which it isn't suppose to go against each other umm... something to think about.

No, it's not OK for women to teach as authority over men in the church.

But of course they can teach children and other women. They can also study with people about becoming Christians and they can participate in bible study/discussions as long as a Christian man is the teacher/authority figure. :)

I would even caution women

against teaching other women,

or other children, than their own,

because:

14

... it was not Adam who was DECEIVED, but THE WOMAN being deceived, fell into transgression.

15 But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

Yep, Adam sinned with his eyes wide open. Men typically sin and know it while they do it. Women stumble unintentionally more often.

I believe God uses women to lead if men fail to fulfill the role. Deborah comes to mind. She admonished Barak to lead, but he wouldn't. Judges 4

Basically, if women lead, men failed.

woe is me - hubby and I can't have children, so I can be of no use in the Kingdom of God!

WRONG!

I realize that I will be ignored by some of the very people I'm trying to reach here because I'm a woman - but hey, at least I'm not a dishonest woman who would put up a genderless sock-puppet just so someone might pay attention to what I say....... to whoever has ears to hear:

For you are ALL SONS of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (cf Gal.3)

That's right, I am a SON OF GOD in Christ - in whom there is neither male nor female.

The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right; you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance among their father's brothers, and cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. (Numbers 27:7)

Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.
This scripture is not speaking of women as opposed to men - I do believe that men and children should also - when learning - learn "in silence and with all submission" - it is speaking about how one should learn -and evidently there was a problem in Timothy's parish with women not following this protocol - women with arrogance problems. We are all - male and female - given great liberty in Christ, but neither men nor women should use their liberty as an occasion to the prideful flesh, but rather by love serve one another (Galatians 5:13).

And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.
IN THE ORIGINAL GREEK this verse might well have read "And I do not permit a wife to teach or to have authority over her husband, in order that she might live a quiet, undisturbed, peaceable life." Most women know that the reason a wife can't teach her husband is because he won't listen. And it is a wise wife who knows that it is not a good idea for her husband to not seek advice from others outside the home - this makes the marriage a stagnant pool - nothing flowing in to refresh and invigorate......

For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
Adam was not deceived - he made the decision to sin in the full light of knowledge that it was sin - just to please his wife. It is a wise wife who knows that her advice to hubby may be self-serving, even if she doesn't realize it, for the heart (of a woman or of a man) is deceptive above all things. Better to seek the counsel of a party without so much of a vested interest..... because the husband, in the interest of pleasing his wife, is liable to do something he knows is wrong, just as Adam did.

Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they (the man and the wife?) continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
The curse for Eve that came as a result of her fall into transgression is pain in childbearing. I believe that this is what this verse is talking about - Jesus came to set us free from the curse of sin, and this verse seems to me to be a promise that women have available to them the promise of pain-free labour. (of course, this promise, like all the promises of God, must be apprehended, and this is a completely separate subject from the one the OP was trying to address, so let's not get too far offtrack - suffice it to say that the "saved in childbearing" clause has nothing to do with whether women may teach or not)

I certainly hope this clears it up for at least SOME people......

many blessings, all around, whether you agree with me or not.......

In the Book of Acts, chapter 18, Priscilla and Aquila are presented as faithful ministers for Christ. Priscilla's name is mentioned first, likely indicating that she was more "prominent" in ministry than her husband.

Deborah was a judge.
Phoebe was a Deacon

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither male nor female"

"Let no man be contentious, for we have not such laws" (1 Corn. 11:16)

ron, your sarcasm and blatent anger towards women make me question your motive in starting a thread like this. To bash women? To hurt us? MY opinion is men are so dumb...God had to use a donkey in the OT to talk to a man, knocked a man off his horse in the NT to get his attention. IF Adam had been doing what GOD told him to in the first place..guess what??? WOMAN wouldn't of been decieved. Lets give it a rest about how 'bad' women are ok? Men are no better. I agree with Pauls teachings...but I won't use it to bash someone else, OR MISUSE it to abuse women.
