• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I had a psychotic religious experience as well as the normal symptoms of bipolar and I want to know whether this is demon possession or not. What is the difference?

Yours in Christ

Zonto
If you've given your life to Christ Zonto there is no way that it was a demonic possession. The Holy Spirit wouldn't allow it. There is a verse in the bible that says this but I don't have my bible with me so I can't find it for you. But I would safely say that you should go to your doc and request more meds.

I have already been to my docter and changed meds. I was just curious about the difference between the two. Being bipolar and going through extremes feels awful and very scary and its easy to feel condemned. I thank God because his hand has been strong in my life and I am trusting in Him.

I have never thought my bipolar was demonic possession. I am not sure of the verse that you speak of washclan but would love to know if you can look it up.

Zonto what was it about your psychotic eposide that makes you think it could be demonic? What were the symptoms. Just curious and thought if you explained a little more we may be able to say a little more about your experience.

Found the following online and he says it better than I could.

The Holy Spirit has come "to abide with us for ever," and as, "He that is in you is greater than he that is in the world;" it is impossible for Christians to be possessed by demons as long as they keep their faith in Jesus, and don't fall away from God. Jn.14v16. 1Jn.4v4. Lk.8v13. Mt.24v12,13. 2Thes.2v1-3. Heb.6v1-8. 10v26,27. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise; the word for seal in Eph.1v13,14. is "sphragizo," (see Eph.4v30. and 2Cor.1v22.) in Paul's time a seal was used as both a sign of ownership and a guarantee. Paul says "having believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise." "Having believed," is "pisteuosantes," the aorist participle of "pisteuo," "to believe," this shows that Paul is speaking of the baptism in the spirit and not regeneration, for the aorist participle speaks of an action which takes place before the action of the leading verb. This is exactly the same construction as Acts.19v2., which the Authorised Version correctly translates, "Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?" The aorist participle again showing that the believing took place at some time before the receiving of the Holy Spirit. This was proved by events, for in Acts.19v1-6., the Ephesians received the Holy Spirit some time after their baptism in water, when Paul laid his hands upon them.

God the Father puts His seal of ownership upon us by the Holy Spirit's abiding presence, and He warns the powers of darkness that we belong to Him. Eph.1v13,14. Indeed, evil spirits are in great danger when they try to attack God's children, for the Holy Spirit is with us not only to protect us; but also to actively threaten the powers of darkness. His presence makes us quite immune to demon possession. 1Pet.1v4,5. The Holy Spirit also protects Christians who have not been baptised in the Holy Spirit; for His protection is there, whether He is "with us," or "in us." Jn.14v17. We have a good Heavenly Father who protects and defends His children, and only gives them the Holy Spirit and good gifts. Lk.11v9-13. God our Father guarantees that through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit we cannot get serpents, scorpions or stones. This protection springs from the "much more" love of God for us. In Jn.17v23. Jesus tells us that the Father loves Christians just as He loves Him. Our heavenly Father would no more allow a demon to enter His dearly beloved children, than He would allow a demon to enter His dearly beloved Son, our dear Lord Jesus.

The powers of darkness fear Christians who know their position and security in Christ; because God's presence with us makes us a very definite threat and danger to them. In James.4v7., "submit" is the aorist passive imperative of "hupotasso," a military term meaning, "to place or range under;" as we array ourselves under God and resist the Devil; God is with us, and His awesome might causes Satan to flee. James also tells us, in James.4v6., that God resists the proud; "resists" is "antitasso," a military term meaning, "to array against, to range in battle against," God arrays Himself with us against the arrogant pride of the powers of darkness. In verse 7., "resist," "antistete," is the aorist active imperative of "anthistemi," "to take a stand against," as we take a stand with God against Satan, Satan flees from us.

ok, im sick and tired of people being so blind, you can be saved and still be possessed. however, if you are saved you cannot become possesed, or demonized as some would say. if you are possessed before you come to the lord that doesnt mean the demon(s) leave. the more you read the bible and pray the harder it becomes for the demon to stay, rebuke it. go get help your pastor can help. but my point is, people, unless you know for sure, and you have completly analized the word and talked to god (pray) about it, dont give advice. the more important point is EVEN IF YOU ARE SAVED YOU CAN BE POSSESSED!!!!!!!!!

Frysauce:

Are you saying that a person who is possessed before they come to the Lord won't have a demon necessarily leave their body? But someone who has come to the Lord cannot have a demon take up residence in their body?

I will ask my mentor and see what she says...

Blessings,
Connie

I know it's speaking in other languages one doesn't normally know, a negative reaction towards religious objects and an unnatural strength (for the possessed) according to the Catholic church, but I'm not really familiar with other denominations.

God Bless You,

This reminds me when I had my very first episode and was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. I was saved and had a prayer cell in my home. I had a terrible manic experience, however, I could not tell the difference at the time between reality and fantasy.

In this vulnerable state I was confused and lead to believe by some that I was possessed. This made me depressed and confused. I asked the Father to show me the truth and the Holy Spirit who is the comforter showed me the way. Praise the Lord that God showed up, because there are so many confused Christians out there preaching and misleading the body of Christ.

You cannot be possessed with demons if you are truly saved. If you have truly given your life to Christ and repented of your sins and invited the Lord to dwell inside of you then there is no way the enemy can possess you. You are stamped and sealed and your name is written in the book of life.

Can you be a Christian who has many other strongholds such as oppression, rejection, depression, anger, bitterness, jealousy, etc. yes. But that is why we must repent of our sins every day and ask the Lord to help us with our walk. God is a God of love and forgiveness. He is not a liar. The enemy is a liar. He cannot dwell where there is light. I agree with the article that was posted here.

Sometimes we must continue to change our medications until the right one balances us out. It took 15 different kinds of medications before I was stable. :)
