When Heroes Are Offensive

Several days ago I was having a conversation in the C&WR forum and on a tangent, a Christian member posted a picture of Scarlet Witch from the X-Men/Marvel franchise. I replied with a picture of Raven from the Teen Titans cartoon (DC Comics/Warner Brothers). Another Christian member took offense to such images and wanted us to remove the posts, which we did.

Out of curiosity, I asked if a picture of Star Butterfly from the Disney cartoon, Star Vs. The Forces of Evil was also offensive (she's also a magical/witch like character). And yet another Christian member said she was.

I find this rather confusing because all three characters are heroines. They're the good guys (gals, really) who fight bad guys and save the world. But they were deemed to be offensive based completely on one still image showing character design while knowing absolutely nothing about their substance of their character. I also shouldn't have to point out that these characters and their magical abilities are all 100% fictional.

I often hear Christians encourage each other to be more Christ-like. "What would Jesus do?" is practically the slogan for Christianity. Doesn't the Bible lay out God's expectations of humans and provide a guide on how to live a good life? To me, that sounds like a person's character is valuable; something important to consider. But it's something to dismiss if the person is wearing a cloak, or holding a toy-like magic wand, or perhaps in reality, isn't Christian.

Except Deadpool. Being offensive is his shtick so he doesn't count.
