What Jesus Teaches About Trusting God

Trust the Pilot.jpg

Whenever we travel by air, there is a great deal of trust placed in the aircraft and the pilot in charge of the flight. Most of us do not fully understand how jet engines work or how they are capable of lifting hundreds of people into the air. We are completely unaware of the pilot’s skill level. We have no access to the aircraft’s maintenance record. We have not given the pilot a complete medical exam. We simply take our seat trusting all these things have been accounted for by others. For most of us, an airplane ride is simply a form of transportation; it’s the destination that we are most concerned about.

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus made it clear that obsessing over trivial matters of daily life is only a distraction from what our true concerns should be.

“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” Matthew 6:25 (NASB)

When we travel by air, there is no amount of worrying that will cause the airplane to fly better or give the pilot additional wisdom. Worrying in the passenger’s seat of an airplane accomplishes absolutely nothing.

“And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?” Matthew 6:27 (NASB)

When we fly, we have to trust that the airline company has provided the appropriate aircraft maintenance and the proper level of training to the pilot. Nevertheless, even if these things have been neglected, there is no amount of concern on our part that will change the circumstance. We are much better served when we use our travel time to focus on the purpose of our trip.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 (NASB)

The kingdom of heaven is our ultimate destination and Jesus taught us to focus on that goal. When we spend time worrying about our bank account and the other daily necessities, we are distracted from our true purpose – to serve God by serving others. Jesus teaches that we are to dedicate our lives to serving God – in essences we are to trust God to fly the airplane as we focus on the reason for making the trip.

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34 (NASB)
