What Jesus Teaches About Growing Seeds

God’s creation is full of lessons. When we study all the things that God has made, we discover vivid illustrations of his methods, his truth, and his connection to us all. We can see how God works by simply stepping into a garden and planting a seed. Watching that seed grow is a graphic example of how the kingdom of God is being built. In one of his parables, Jesus makes it clear that the Word of God is the seed.

“Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God.” Luke 8:11 (NASB)

Committed followers of Jesus, preachers, and evangelists, all use this seed to grow new believers that will blossom into an abundant garden. Jesus illustrates the complete process for us in this parable.

“And He was saying, “The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil.” Mark 4:26 (NASB)

The kingdom of God grows in precisely the same way your backyard garden grows. In his parable, Jesus wants us to grasp the miraculous nature of seed. Like the seed growing in your garden, the Word of God, when properly planted, has an astonishing ability to sprout and grow committed followers of Jesus Christ.

“He goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows—how, he himself does not know.” Mark 4:27 (NASB)

Take a minute right now and carefully consider how a tiny seed is able to grow into a large plant, flowering bush, or towering tree. Seeds are incredible things! God created the seed to do what it does – we have no ability to build a seed on our own.

“The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head.” Mark 4:28 (NASB)

Someone who is open to hearing the message of the Bible is like a fertile field waiting for the seed to be planted. The Word of God is the mechanism designed by God to convert that fertile soil into a true believer. Those of us who sow the seed are merely gardeners spreading God’s miraculous truth. The abundant growth that follows has everything to do with the seed and its Creator and only a little to do with our efforts as sowers.

“But when the crop permits, he immediately puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” Mark 4:29 (NASB)

The moment a new believer blossoms into a sincere follower of Jesus Christ, God is quick to gather that ripe fruit into His kingdom. This is an ongoing process that has been in daily operation since Jesus first began His ministry. We should all be actively pursuing this kind of gardening.
