Tuesday, December 22, 2009, 8:20 a.m. – this song is in my mind:
O Sacred Head Now Wounded
Text: Anonymous; trans. by Paul Gerhardt and James W. Alexander
Music: Hans L. Hassler, 1564-1612; harm. by J.S. Bach, 1685-1750
Tune: PASSION CHORALE, Meter: 76.76 D
O sacred Head, now wounded,
with grief and shame weighed down,
now scornfully surrounded
With thorns, Thine only crown:
How pale Thou art with anguish,
With sore abuse and scorn!
How does that visage languish
Which once was bright as morn?
What Thou, my Lord, has suffered
Was all for sinners' gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression,
But Thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior!
'Tis I deserve Thy place;
Look on me with Thy favor,
Vouchsafe to me Thy grace.
What language shall I borrow
To thank Thee, dearest friend,
For this Thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end?
O make me Thine forever;
And should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never
Outlive my love for Thee.
Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. I read Acts 10:
What language shall I borrow
To thank Thee, dearest friend,
For this Thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end?
O make me Thine forever;
And should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never
Outlive my love for Thee.
“Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us."
May we all hear what the Lord would want to say to us through the words to this song and through this passage of scripture. This is the story of salvation. For all who will accept Jesus Christ; for all who believe in Him – they shall receive forgiveness of sins through His name no matter where they have come from.
Thank you, Jesus, for salvation. Thank you for dying on the cross for our sins. Thank you for taking my sin upon you and for forgiving me of all sin; for providing the way for me to be set free from the bondage to and the penalty of sin. Make me Thine forever. Lord, never let me outlive my love for Thee! Give me strength to stand firm in my faith, not wavering, and prepare my heart for the days of severe persecution that are coming soon to America and to the rest of the world. In Jesus’ name, amen!
