What’s Wrong With You?

“You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.” James 4:3 (NASB)

It’s not always easy for us to nail down precisely what are motives are for any specific request from God. It can be fairly easy to turn a selfish motive into a sympathetic plea for the good of someone else. Of course God is not fooled – but I think we sometimes fool ourselves. In this case, it may be that what’s wrong with us is we lack wisdom. Wisdom provides us with the capacity to see the world in the light of God’s stated purpose.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5 (NASB)

I’m wondering if it’s possible to ask God for wisdom for the wrong reasons. It seems to me it would not be in God’s will for us to seek wisdom to gain material wealth. Then again, it could be that we lack wisdom because what’s wrong with us is we have doubts about God’s ability to grant that request.

“But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.” James 1:6 (NASB)

We could therefore be trapped in a never-ending cycle of asking for the wrong reason, because of our lack of wisdom, which cannot be realized because of our lack of faith. Ultimately, there seems to be a purity of thought and intentions that is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. There’s no question that the world we live in clouds our minds and darkens our heart to a certain degree no matter how diligent we are about moving toward the light. It may be that what’s wrong is where we currently reside. I don’t think we should use that obstacle as an excuse to give up on connecting with God with request from pure motives expressed with sincere faith. In the end, what’s wrong with us will be wiped away and discarded. What’s left will be who we truly are in the eyes of God.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12 (NASB)
