This week was week #3 at the College of the Transfiguration. On Wednesday, the Feast of the Transfiguration, the Contextual Theology students had a nice presentation by William Domeris, the Rector of COTT on the Old Testament and poverty. He spent 10 years researching for his book, Touching the Heart of God, and spent some time on an archeological dig in Israel as well.
That same afternoon, Therese and I went out to a goat farm of one of the cathedral parishioners. It is shearing time and we got to watch how it is done.
But, I have to admit, all I can think about right now is how we spent the weekend. Friday, Cortney, Steve, Therese and I drove to Jeffreys Bay. We stopped in Colleen Glen for lunch at the Elephant Walk. It was a little Afrikaner farmers community. We got to the Ubuntu hostel in J-Bay in the mid-afternoon, dropped off our luggage, and went right to the beach. But not just any beach - Supertubes! The surfers out there are all top caliber types and Supertubes is one of the top five surfing spots in the world. We spent a long time just hypnotized by it all. We returned for a fish braai (grill) with other people in the hostel (American, South African, French, English, Irish) and everyone spent the evening telling stories and getting to know other travelers.
Saturday we went into town after breakfast. We walked to the Billabong Factory store, Country Living, and other shops in the area. If you can believe it, in 10 weeks in South Africa, this is the first time Therese and I actually shopped for ourselves for stuff to bring home. After a great seafood lunch along the strip, we returned to Ubuntu to drop off our stuff. That afternoon we went back to the beach because the word was that sometime that afternoon/evening the swells would reach 8 meters! The waves were the largest I've ever seen. Simply stunning.
After a bit of a snack break and some rounds of pool, we set out for dinner. We went to Walskippers which is this little place on the sand just outside J-Bay in Marina Martinique. I had a crocodile steak and Therese had a seafood platter.
Today, after we checked out of the hostel, we took one last look at the surfers. We were told of a lion sanctuary at the fish braai, so we headed to the town of Seaview. We got to see tigers, lions (and hear them growl - oh my goodness), giraffe (including a baby), zebra, wildebeest, and a buffalo. But that isn't the best part. We drove to this enclosure where we got to hold and play with 3 month old lion cubs! They were very cute in a "I'll be lethal in a few months" kind of way. Oh, and I forgot to mention. We got to drive in this one area as the lions were eating and we were within 2 meters of two lionesses eating. The largest, dominant, female didn't seem to approve of that and quite literally herded/escorted/scared/chased us out of there. I don't know how to fully describe the feeling of having an unhappy lion that close to you as you are trying to speed away and roll up your window.
