Throughout the world there are many who make the claim to be Christian and yet remain spiritually dead. They may read the bible, go to a local church, pray, and yet they remain spiritually separated from God. These so-called believers do all kinds of 'good' works in the name of the Lord and most of them honestly believe their lives are pleasing to God. Regrettably, in the end they will find out that these deeds had little to do with the kingdom of heaven. Jesus said, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and, in your name, perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'" (Matthew 7:21-23).
Knowing the will of the Father should be no mystery to His true servants. Doing His will is simply doing what He asks us to do. Everything that Jesus did in His ministry was aligned with the will of the Father. "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me." (John 6:38). Therefore, Christians must live their lives to do the will of the Father and not busy themselves with work that in the end amounts to nothing. This is the ministry of the Christian until the day the Lord takes us home.
Jesus taught us much concerning how Christians should rest in the Lord and trust in Him to guide our path versus becoming overwhelmed with busy work which robs us of time we could spend focused on Him. Here is just one account: "As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, He came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:38-42).
Mary was completely focused on Jesus, listening intently to what He has to say making herself available to serve Him in doing whatever He might ask of her. Christians need not get caught up in busy work like Martha did trying to serve the Lord and yet neglecting to keep our gaze upon Him. I believe Martha truly meant well as do so many Christians who are distracted from what is most important as they become overwhelmed with busy work. We must choose to be more like Mary, waiting on the Lord to guide and direct us in our ministry. There is no better time than the present to drop what we are doing, focus on the Lord, and find out what it is the Father has planned for you to do. He will truly reestablish your priorities, purpose, and direction through the power of the Holy Spirit who will guide you in paths of righteousness according to His will. Are you overwhelmed with busy work in the name of the lord, or are you resting in the Lord as Jesus taught us to do?
