To Party or Not?

I find myself pondering the question “Should Christians Party?” I believe we should. It seems to me that the majority of Christians put on the deadbeat boring stuck-up image. I believe this makes Christianity appear unattractive to non-believers. This is the last thing we need to do. We need to make the Christian life look as appealing as possible. I believe we need to step up as Christians and go out and have a good time.

Last night I went to a housewarming party with a friend named Bill. Now Bill is not your typical Christian. In fact, he’s not a believer at all. Bill is 39 years old, African American, Pagan, and Homosexual. Now this type of person doesn’t seem like he would be a very good friend to a disciple of Christ Jesus. But this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Bill is kind, respectful, sarcastic at times, a programmer, and an amazing friend. I believe Bill’s decision to interact sexually with men is wrong. I also believe his decision to consume alcohol until the point where he’s completely and utterly obliterated is wrong. Regardless of this I must love him for who he is and not for what he does. So I simply tell him what I believe, that he’s entitled to his opinion; even though I don’t agree with it, and we put our differences aside. Overall I believe we have a pretty good friendship.

We showed up to Adam and Steve’s housewarming party at about 6:00. Adam and Steve have been together for over 16 years. This is their first house. The house is absolutely beautiful. It’s a three story two and half bath house. It has a magnificent view overlooking a small valley with a Jewish Synagogue on the other side. Steve did an amazing job decorating the place. The style is the type that would make Tim Allen want to invent a new wrecking ball with chainsaws attached to it. But if you care for the bold, artistic, up-idy, style you would enjoy it. He even completed it with a spiral staircase down to the den/bar.

The food spread was incredible! They had wraps, sushi, shrimp, and more. There was so much food on the table there wasn’t a place to put your drink down. As for the drinks, of course they had alcohol. Just about every type, but what do you expect from an ex-bartender. They also had non-alcoholic beverages prepared as well. I found this to be Very Considerate. I could probably write an entire blog just on the food!

The people there were very nice. There was quite a variation of people there ranging from florist, to yoga instructors, from pagans to those who practice Hinduism. We all had a great time. I guess there were about thirty people that came over a four hour span. These people that came are those whom really need the love of Jesus. I was talking to Adam about religions and different beliefs when he brought up the fact that he didn’t think that doing extra good works here determines where he goes after this life. I wasn’t sure where he got that that from but I assured him that sounded like Mormonism and could personally see that as the truth. I quickly told him what I believe in Jesus. I simply said “at the beginning of time there was Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. They ate the forbidden fruit. As a result they were cast out of the garden and separated from God. It hurt God to be separated from us. So he sent his Son(Jesus Christ) to die on the cross so that we can be reunited with him. I told him since Jesus died on the cross for us, we don’t get to heaven off of what we do. We get because of what Jesus did for us on the cross for as long as we believe in him we will get that free gift. I told him that Jesus is the common grounds that should bring us all together. That we need to take our eyes off of our differences, and focus them on Christ Jesus. As a result, Adam told me he really liked my philosophy. I was thinking that this wasn’t really my philosophy, but Christianity in a nut shell. Could it really be that no-one has ever taken the time to explain the basics of Christianity to Adam before?

This is a sad fact, but a true one. There are so many people even in the united states that just don’t know anything about Jesus. I believe this is because they don’t ever go into places that would have that type of thing. We need to place ourselves in the trenches every once and a while. We need to put on the Full Armor of God, and get into these places where Christians don’t usually go. We need to have a good time without Alcohol, drugs, or sex. We need to make Christianity appealing to the non-believer. So I encourage you all, Party, Party, Party, in the name of Jesus!
