"The Workshop of Change"

This is a poem I wrote after joining a "Grief" workshop quite a while after my husband's death. The people there were all grieving for something or someone lost in their life whether through a death or divorce etc.. so it prompted me to write about what I was feeling at the time....

The Workshop Of Change

We walk through the door with a sense of the unknown
And look around to see others like us,
We ask ourselves “Why are we here?, then take a seat
And wonder, will what we learn in fact turn to a “plus!?”

Our minds are so full of events from the past
For some this makes it hard just to think,
For all there is hope for renewal of life
As we’re all bound together by a link.

Some have been scarred by a life of abuse,
Whether mentally or verbally, doesn’t matter,
It’s amazing at what emerges as the course moves along
And we are “humbled” by what’s heard from other “chatters!”

Others are grieving because loved ones are lost,
They wonder how to move on through the days,
Everything’s blurry, nothing’s clear anymore as
Each day seems to be clouded in a haze.

There are those who were blinded by the love that they felt
For their partner who decided to leave,
Shattered dreams and plans for the future,
A heart full of pain, they now also will grieve.

As a result of the counselling that we each have received,
There is hope that each day can bring healing,
We CAN deal with the knocks and blows that we take
The idea of new life seems appealing!

Life itself we discover is a series of risks
But unless there is risk there’s no life!
It’s how we deal with whatever happens to us
Which determines our happiness or strife!

As we come to the end of this wonderful course,
We have all learned so much on how to manage,
When days might be rough and once again we are hit,
We know that we can control the damage!

Everyone here has changed to a degree
As from their “chains” they are slowly being freed,
This workshop has been a “life saver” of sorts
And on this I think we can all be agreed!

So hang in there friends, I say to each of you now
As we prepare to finish this class
There is light ahead, at the end of the darkness
But be prepared to file certain things in the past!

Thanks to all who have helped us to prepare in some way
Whether running the course or encouraging us
We will be wiser as we work through the days
And as we wondered at the start, yes it has been a “plus!”

I encourage anyone who sees a workshop available which may be centred around something which is causing them a certain amount of grief, to go along and give it a try... I feel that my course helped me in quite a few different ways. I thought just praying would be enough but many times God provides others to help us also and I needed to recognise that..
