The Ten Commandments and Bible Interpretation

Exodus 20

And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

This is good to remember . A Truthful interpretation .. also frees from bondage .. or as Jesus said .. the truth .. sets free

3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

What the text identifies God is .. is king in the text . God is love, God is long suffering and kind, God is many things .. put nothing before what God is, these are the matters of priority when logic needs to make a choice between one and the other.

4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

Your theology .. the picture you make in your head of what any passage will say .. cannot be a static image . whether it be in the old testament or the new testament writings

5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

You will not worship the idols of your understanding, God is God . the text is the text . theologies of men and women are theologies of men and women .

the third and fourth generation bit explains a little the persistence of religious groups .. but also the revolving door of children leaving in the third and fourth generation. and also some families seem to always be blessed .

7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

Do not quibble over the meaning of words . over the meaning of the words that make up God's name. this spreads as gangrene through the body of Christ .. until the limb needs to be cut off .

8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Remember to take a break from reading the bible every so often . thinking on the concepts in it are hard work . and the brain and heart eventually get exhausted . take 1/7th time off compared to the amount of time spent studying the bible regularily and the last time a rest was taken . do not be afraid to rest for long periods of time. some saints still do not have a bible .. and God keeps them too .

12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Honour God who sustains you and the church that mothers you, you cannot grow alone.

13 “You shall not murder.

Do not use the bible to hate other people

14 “You shall not commit adultery.

Do not turn the bible into a manner of picking up members of the opposite sex .

Do not turn the bible into an idol .. this too is adultery .

The bible is not God . Jesus is the bridegroom, the church is the bride . the bible will not be present during the wedding but the bride and Jesus will
.

15 “You shall not steal.

Spend adequate time praying as well . do not feed off other people's infilling . be ready always . you never know when i will come .

16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

You shall not use the bible to destroy people's lives, you shall not use the bible to manipulate others, you shall not speak with a bitter and/or envious heart when reading the bible and claim what you are thinking is the truth .

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

You shall not covet for others to take your interpretation of the bible as "gospel" as it is written elsewhere in the bible "may God be true and every man a liar"

Amen .
