The Prayers Of David: Prayer For Divine Help

Texts: "Be not thou far from me, O Lord: O strength, haste thee to help me"(Psalm 22:19)
"Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake" (Psalm 44:26)

These scriptures amidst many other ones list the prayers of David for divine help. Other scriptures include Psalm 121:1 where David declared that he will look to God as the ultimate source of his help in life, its the same sentiment that was expressed in Psalm 124:8, "Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth". God is the ultimate source of our help and it is to him that we look to all the time.

Praying for divine help is one of the common themes or prayers you will find in the Psalms and like every other prayer we have studied so far, this prayer was more emphasized in the Psalms than any other portion of the bible. So let's do our quick word counts through the Bible(the King James version),117 times the word HELP was used in the scripture and 40 times out of this usage was in the PSALMS. This means that 30% of the times the word HELP was used in the scripture was in the Psalms. And compared to other usages of the word in other parts of the Bible, the word HELP was used in relation to God in the psalms. The psalmist is either praying for the help of God, declaring the help of God or praising the help he has received from God! But for the Psalmists, we would have not understood the place and the power of DIVINE HELP!

David enjoyed the help of God. In 1 Chronicles 12:20-22 some insight was provided into the kind of help David received from God, "As he went to Ziklag, there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of Manasseh. And they helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valor, and were captains in the host. For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God".

Look at the scriptures here, the bible says day by day David received help from God. Men were flocking to him as like the host of God. From today someone reading this will begin to enjoy the day by day help of God! The Spirit of God pointed this out that David was a man helped by God, in verse 18 we read this, "Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band".

When you are helped of God men will willingly surrender their talent, service, and resources to be of help to you! And sometimes when this happens, it is because men are moved by the Spirit of God and not by your pleas for help.
