The Parable Of The Weeds

Jesus taught us many things in both word and deed throughout His earthly ministry. Only a small sampling of these accounts are captured as part of the scriptures in what we commonly refer to as the Gospels. These same scriptures tell us, “Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.” (1 John 2:6). Therefore, what better place is there for the true follower of Christ to learn what Jesus said and did than from these gospels? These truths are so important that Jesus Himself placed special emphasis for His disciples (to include us if we are true Christians) to never forget. “All this I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.” (John 14:25-26). Thus, even if we have no access to a bible, teacher, or other forms of scripture we need not despair. The one true living Word of God lives in His Body (the Church) through the power of the Holy Spirit. This is a promise from our Lord! The advocate will teach us all things we need to know to walk as He walked. We no longer need depend on mankind to teach us from imperfect human minds, we simply need to trust that through faith the Lord will teach us all we need to know to walk as He walked. Praise God!

As true servants of Christ we are called to serve the kingdom of heaven. The parable of the weeds was one of the many parables Jesus taught to illustrate what the kingdom of heaven was like. “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was asleep, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and slipped away. When the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the weeds also appeared. The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ ‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. So the servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ ‘No,’ he said, ‘if you pull the weeds now, you might uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat into my barn.’” (Matthew 13:24-30).

A short while later Jesus dismissed the crowds who He had shared this parable with and His disciples came to Him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” He replied, “The One who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed represents the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. As the weeds are collected and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will weed out of His kingdom every cause of sin and all who practice lawlessness. And they will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.” (Matthew 13:37-43).

Consequently, we know the gospel or good news of Jesus has been sown as seeds among mankind. Those who have heard and understand this message have been given a choice. Do I surrender all (everything) to abandon who I am and have been in this world to follow Jesus or do I reject this good news to hold onto my life as I know it. The freewill choice is ours to make. Thus, if we do surrender and are born again we will receive the Holy Spirit to live within us and transform us into a new creation. We will become the “wheat” in the parable. However, if we reject the gospel and go on living our lives the way we choose to we will in the end be lost forevermore. We remain the “weeds” in the parable. Today many live false religious lives and call themselves Christian and yet remain spiritually dead and separated from God. They practice their religious traditions visiting local church buildings with many others who remain in their same condition. This is not serving the kingdom of heaven, but instead serving an earthly kingdom that serves mankind’s design of how to please God. Regrettably, unless they repent of these practices and truly surrender all to Christ they will receive a terrifying message in the end. Jesus will tell them plainly, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!” (Matthew 7:23).
