“Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant they broke, though I was a husband to them, declares the LORD. ‘But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD. I will put My law in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people. No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquities and will remember their sins no more.’” Jeremiah 31:31-34

Therefore, well before the birth of Jesus God proclaimed that through the Messiah, everyone who is chosen will be part of this new covenant. “I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never turn away from doing good to them, and I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will never turn away from Me.” Jeremiah 32:40 Moreover, we have learned from the scriptures that the problem with the first covenant was that mankind could not fulfill it because of their disobedience of the Law and the Prophets. However, Jesus ushered in the kingdom of heaven and a new covenant not based on the fulfillment of the Law, but instead purely based on love! Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40

The Israelites, God’s chosen people, had demonstrated an endless history of disobedience toward God. “But God found fault with the people and said: ‘Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.’” Hebrews 8:8 “This is the covenant I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord. I will put My Laws in their hearts and inscribe them on their minds. Then he adds: ‘Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.’” Hebrews 10:16-17 The shedding of the blood of Jesus for the sins of all mankind is what ushered in this new covenant. “In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’” 1 Corinthians 11:25

Jesus proclaimed before His death, “But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.” John 4:23 Under the first covenant, God’s chosen people (the Israelites), lived their lives completely governed by the teachings of the Law and the Prophets in accordance with the will of God. However, under the new covenant, God’s chosen people (the Body of Christ), live their lives governed by the Holy Spirit in accordance with the will of God. “God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:24 Therefore, unlike under the first covenant of a written word (the Law), God’s chosen people will live a life led by the Spirit as they already have God’s Laws written in their minds and inscribed on their hearts as God has promised.

Finally, just as circumcision of the flesh was part of the first covenant between mankind and God, the new covenant established a new circumcision through worshipping God in the spirit and having no confidence in the flesh. “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” Philippians 3:3 The new covenant offers a new life through spiritual transformation and a rebirth of one’s spirit through the power of the Holy Spirit (born-again), which produces a new creation. “For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything. What counts is a new creation.” Galatians 6:15 “And He has qualified us as ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” 2 Corinthians 3:6 Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” John 3:3 Therefore, praise God for His never ending Love and His offer to become members of the kingdom of heaven!
