The Long Way Out vs The Short Way Out

There was snow, and more snow, and even more snow. I've seen more snow than I want to see in the last couple of days...and ice too. I really hate the ice. Especially since I have to drive in it. I find it quite scary.

Friday and Saturdays are my days off. This last Friday I went to my Aunt Louise's house. I try to go there every two weeks. I usually start lunch/dinner in the crock pot, take her to her hair appointment, if she needs to go grocery shopping we do that, then we go back to her house and eat and watch a movie or two and chat. I really enjoy visiting her. She is 84 and still gets around quite well.

So for lunch this last Friday I made Vegan Barbecue Pulled Pork Sandwiches. I used a recipe I found on line. The "pork" part of the recipe was Jackfruit . I had never heard of Jackfruit. Since we don't have an Asian market anywhere near I ordered a can off of Amazon.com. I was pleased that it turned out to be quite tasty and did indeed taste like and had the texture of pork. My aunt loved it and took great pride in telling all her friends about this new food she ate and how we made pulled pork sandwiches only it wasn't pork. I'm not a vegan but I don't eat pork so it was a nice treat and healthy too.

The Parsha this week is:
Exodus 13:17-17:16
Judges 4:4-5:31
Mark 3:7-19

Today I will focus on:
Ex 13:17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near. For God said, “Lest the people change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt.” 18 But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the people of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt equipped for battle.

The people were equipped for battle yet God knew that when they saw war the people would change their minds and return to Egypt.

An explanation in The Talmud is: "They required training and teaching and disciplining. 'It is like the king who wished to give his son his inheritance. He thought to himself, My son is young; he hardly knows how to read and write. If I give him all my possessions now, will he be able to keep them? I will wait until he has grown in strength and wisdom. In the same way God thought, The children of Israel are verily still children; first let Me teach them to understand and practice My precepts and commandments, then will I give them the Promised Land'"

I think the way God chose to lead them then is the same way He leads us now.
In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 we read:
3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is valuable for teaching the truth, convicting of sin, correcting faults and training in right living; 17 thus anyone who belongs to God may be fully equipped for every good work.

Upon coming to God and committing to follow Him I believe we are immediately "fully equipped" to do battle to overcome whatever we need to overcome in order to finish the race. However, when we come up against difficult things the fleshly tendency is to turn tail and run back to what is most familiar and comfortable to us...our past. So God takes us the long way because during that time period we learn to trust Him. In the long way we see Him come through for us in miraculous ways. In the long way we get the teachings of the truth. We're convicted of our sins and we learn to repent. He corrects our faults, and trains us in right living so that when the time comes we know how to use with skill the equipment we've been given.

What a gracious God we have Who is so patient and loving toward us. We should not be discouraged in being God led via the long way out. It's a time of training and maturing so that we learn how to use all that we are equipped with.
