The Last Word...

Hebrews 1:1-4

In giving us his only Son, God also gave us His final Word (John 1:1-4). In Christ, God spoke everything to us that He desired to speak, all at once and once and for all. Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, the heir of all things, by Whom also the worlds were made. Christ is the brightness of God’s glory, the express image of God’s person, the upholder off all things by the word of his power. When he had, by Himself, purged our sins, He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high. All of which speaks of finality.

Christ is the full and final revelation of God to man. He is the first creation revealed and He is the new creation revealed (Genesis 1:3 et. al.; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Revelation 21-22). From first to last, from Old Testament to New, Christ is the Word of God and that word is sealed and not to be altered. (Revelation 22:18-19) There is nothing left for God to say to us for there is nothing greater than Christ. Even His final word to the believer and unbeliever is already established in Christ. (Matthew 25:14-30)

God has openly declared, “this is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.” (Matthew 3:17) And he has commanded us to hear no other. In the Son of God are hidden all the treasures of the wisdom and knowledge of God (Colossians 2:3). In Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Colossians 2:9). Apart from Christ there is no ‘truth’ (John 14:6). Once the Gospel of God’s grace in Christ is declared we have everything that pertains to life and Godliness (2 Peter 1:3). And if we will not set our eyes firmly on Christ as the Word, who is set down at the right hand of God (Hebrews 12:1-2), if we ask more from God, if we seek something novel or something beside the Word, we are acting foolishly by committing a great offence of unbelief against God’s testimony.

When God spoke in earlier times to the fathers, by the prophets, it was to promise Christ. If the fathers inquired of God, their inquiries were directed to petitions for Christ and expectancy concerning Him. We, the children of the fathers and heir of the prophets, must now be guided in all things by the Word of Christ and by these means we must find our strength, help and comfort. We may hear what men say, for good or for ill, but we must be confident only in what the LORD God says, by the Lord Jesus Christ! In brief, we must rely on what the LORD says and in the manner that He endorses.

Many will say to the Lord, “have we not prophesied (or spoke under inspiration) in Thy name, and in Thy name have cast out devils, and in Thy name done many wonderful works?” But according to what did they speak and act? Was it the Word of God incarnate and in Scripture, or was it the imaginations of men and the doctrines of demons? We know from the Lord’s answer that it was not the Word of God for He declares, “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matthew 7:22-23) Who works iniquity more thoroughly than the one who will not receive, believe and obey the living Word and the living Word alone? (Genesis 3:1-5)
