I don't have much talent , so it is not a big issue for me. Still I have been guilty of envy several times in my life.
I remember being envious of one guy who played the guitar so much better than me. I realised how primitive were my skills compared to him. It actually discouraged me from going further. But I did to some extent. He however went on to be a High School Music teacher and professional performer.
Just to rub it in, he was liked by the girl I had a crush on in High School. That killed me!
I felt like a born loser.
Then my teaching career. So many more talented teachers than me. I was the shy introverted one who had to compensate by being super organised and prepared. Daily I was reminded of my shortcomings by witnessing the superior skills and talents of mostly extroverted teachers.
It made me seriously doubt whether I was in the right occupation. And I eventually quit. I realised my voice was just too soft and there was no way of making it stronger and louder.
What I also wanted to say on this blog is that with talent comes responsibility. If you have a lot of talent you have an obligation to use it to the best of your ability. Sometimes I envy professional singers or football players. But look at what they sacrifice. Sportsmen have to play even when they are injured. Singers have to perform even when they feel sick. Its not as glamorous as you think.
