I’m glad this weekend is over. Big thunderstorms moved through here on Friday and Saturday night. We lost power in our house late Saturday night and it wasn’t repaired until Sunday afternoon. We have a generator, but, (here’s a big lesson learned) it was stored in the garage…which has electric door openers. Around 1pm on Sunday, hubby figured out a way to use a tree trimming pole to pull the emergency handle to open the garage door. He had the generator running by 1:30 pm. Power came back on at 2:30 pm. That made us both laugh. I teased him that if he had gotten the generator running early in the day, the power would have come back on earlier.
We’ve got a bunch of branches down from the big maple tree in the back yard. The phone lines have been ripped away from the house but other than that, there’s no real damage. We were lucky in that respect. There are trees and branches down all over our neighborhood. Some of the folks were not so lucky. I heard on the radio this morning that there were a couple of storm related deaths. There are several areas of town that still don’t have power. There were tornados in other parts of the state. The weather forecast for this afternoon is for more thunderstorms, but hopefully not as serious as the ones that passed through here this weekend.
I’m tired and achy today. Rapid changes in barometric pressure cause my feet, ankles, knees and shoulders to ache. I didn’t get a whole lot of restful sleep on Friday and Saturday night because of the storms and then the power outage. To top it off, I’ve got the flu or a summer cold or something like that and it reached its zenith Saturday night. On Sunday, I had to go to a Laundromat to do the wash and while I was there one of the big triple loaders cut loose and flooded the place. My stuff was half way through the washing cycle so I got to finish my laundry in a place with no air conditioning while treading through an inch or so of water on the floor. It was so humid in there it took forever for my clothes to dry. By the time I got done, I was soaked in sweat and miserable from my cold.
But all that is over now and really, on the face of it, we didn’t have as hard a time as many other people are still having in our city. Today, my husband and some men in our neighborhood are going to work together to clear out the fallen branches and trees. My husband has promised me that he won’t over do it. Uh huh. We’ll see. Hubby is disabled because of problems with his feet and a shoulder injury. I just hope that he really does let the younger, more able men do the bulk of the work. He can run the chainsaw and let them do the hauling.
I’m keeping my finger crossed that he doesn’t hurt himself and that the storms expected this afternoon aren’t bad ones.
