This entry is in the series "Spurgeon Sermon Notes"
DISCLAIMER: These are my personal notes based on where my understanding is right now. These, as well as my long form notes are also available on my personal blog Aspie for God on Typepad (link in my bio).

Genesis 1:2 (NLT)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty and darkness covered the deep waters. The Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

*How the Spirit works is a mystery.
*The Spirit needs to rest on us before we can know God.
*Church attendance, praying, and receiving sacraments without the Spirit are empty gestures.
*The Spirit is essential for salvation.
*The best human person produced by morality is still empty without God.
*We need to be born again of the kingdom above, a spiritual birth.
*There is nothing to recommend itself or to collaborate with God in an unbeliever they are a corpse in sin.
*Jesus lived with humans, the Spirit lives in us.
*God can work in the dark and decay.
*Ignorance in some things is advisable, ignorance of God is death.
*Be comforted the Spirit never leaves work unfinished.
*What is impossible for humans is possible with God.
*God uses great sinners as raw materials to make great saints.
*No need to fear the darkness in ourselves and the world God overcomes them nothing can defeat Him.
*Nothing in or by human effort alone is pleasing to God.
*Salvation is only possible through God's son, Jesus.
*To be accepted and adopted living children of the living God we must be hidden in Jesus Christ His first Son.
*Everything by human effort will be consumed by fire as it was swept away by flood.
*Only those clinging to God will be saved to enter the new kingdom.
