Long before he came there have been many instances in the scriptures to point to the spiritual truth that though many may claim there are many ways to God, but there is only one way to God - and that is through his son Jesus!
In Proverbs 12:28 the Bible tells us, “In the WAY of RIGHTEOUSNESS is LIFE: and the pathway thereof there is NO death.” In other words, when you follow the way, you will find LIFE instead of DEATH! And this was what the way said in John 3:16, 'Follow me and you will have life". Furthermore in Proverbs 21:16 the wisdom of God says, “The man that wanders out of the WAY of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.” Look at how the same spiritual truth was re-echoed here:

walking in "the way" is the key to life!
Paul later on in Romans 3:10-12 later lamented that no one is righteous; no one could come to God and experience Him because everyone has gone 'out of the way'!. Those who are walking out of the way are walking out of God's love and life!
‘10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one’
Jesus then came in John 14:6 to give us insight into "the way" that has long been proclaimed through scriptures. He declared to his disciples, and here the sixth 'I am' statement of the master was made: "I am the way the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except by me"!
