I got a rude shock that day. My dad will not open the door for me until I have learned a spiritual truth he was trying to pass across to me. I was just coming back from school and incidentally, he was the only one at home. As I knocked, he came to the door and asked in my native language "who was that?" to which I replied "I am" in my native language! He said no you can't be "I am" because there is just one person that is called the "I am that I am". So he asked me never to say that again to which I somehow agreed and said yes.
I was made to knock again, and this time when he asked who was that I reluctantly replied by with my name as the answer. Really I was used to saying that ‘I am’. Anyway, the lesson was learned that day and somehow it sticks to the mind. However, it was years later that I learned the spiritual truth in there: there is only one I am and he is God! Claiming the "I am” is claiming to be God!
This was what got the Jewish leaders infuriated and made them wanted to stone Jesus! Because when God was to reveal himself to Moses this was what He said to him in Exodus 3:13-14, "I AM THAT I AM".
‘13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, what is his name? What shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Here, God was saying I am existence itself. I am life itself. Everything that exists is contingent on God. All that has been came from Him. Everything in your body derives its existence from God himself…I am that I am!
Over the years the Jewish nation does not believe anyone should call out this name so loud. It should be a name so reverenced and so YAHWEH is the Hebrew word for I AM but it has vowels that have been inserted from another of God's name called ADONAI! Therefore this name was to be reverence!
But when the master came on the scene he plainly spoke: "Before Abraham was: I AM". Hallelujah! The Jewish leaders were angry and tried to kill him, but Jesus has spoken the most powerful truth about his personality: He is God all by himself. This is why others that came before him say "thus saith the lord", but when he came he said, "I say unto you"! Why? He needed not to speak by proxy he spoke by power because he is God all by himself!
